Become part of The Resistance in Wolfenstein II’s awesome Launch Trailer… Doom officially launches for the Switch on November 10
Captain America rather famously socked Adolf Hitler in the jaw back in the 1940s, but Wolfenstein’s BJ Blazkowicz has a more extreme reaction to finding Nazis on American soil in an alternate 1960s. And Blazkowicz’s love of heavy artillery is actually rather similar to Doomguy’s reaction to the forces of Hell on Mars, which will be available for Switch owners very soon.
You can find Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus‘s Launch Trailer and Doom‘s launch date on the Switch after the break. (more…)

New Retail Releases: WWE 2K18, Gran Turismo Sport, Fire Emblem Warriors, More

It’s impossible to say that a single genre is representative of “video games” in 2017, and this grab bag approach is n full display in this week’s new retail releases report.
2K Games will launch their latest wrestling sim, WWE 2K18, for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Sony will follow that up with their simulation, Gran Turismo Sport, an online-focused racer for the PS4.
However, Nintendo is taking the opposite tack and launching Fire Emblem Warriors, a swords-and-sorcery mashup of the franchise’s entire history for the Switch and New 3DS. The crazy kids from South Park will also march into stores this week in South Park: The Fractured But Whole for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One. And speaking of RPGs, Atlus will release Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond The Myth for the 3DS.

The Evil Within 2, Real Bout Fatal Fury, Realms of Arkania, more added to Xbox Store
There are scares-a-plenty in today’s additions to the Xbox Games Store.
Bethesda is back with The Evil Within 2 for the Xbox One, and indie developer Shining Gate Software launched horror puzzler Decay: The Mare for the console. Elsewhere on the Xbox Games Store, Hamster Corporation is bringing back Real Bout Fatal Fury, and United Independent Entertainment is likewise re-releasing the RPG Realms of Arkania: Blade of Destiny.

The Video Game Canon – Mega Man 2

Dig deeper into the Video Game Canon with a look at the the blockbuster success born out of the simple ambitions of Mega Man 2. Here’s a teaser…
The first Mega Man game is a bit of an odd duck, which has become even more pronounced as the years go by. The graphics are simplistic, the sound is tinny, there’s only six Robot Masters instead of the traditional eight, and there’s even a score counter (a feature that was jettisoned from the dozens of sequels that followed). There’s just a smoothness to subsequent games in the franchise that Capcom had yet to master with the first entry.
But like most Mega Man fans, I only learned all this after the fact. At the time, whatever memories I have of the first game were formed by guide writers who described it as an unfairly difficult game, old episodes of Captain N, and the fact that none of the local rental outlets owned a copy (unsurprisingly, Lee Trevino’s Fighting Golf was always available).
I finally got the chance to see what all the fuss was about with Mega Man 2, which was also the first game in the Mega Man franchise to be spearheaded by Capcom’s Keiji Inafune. With an expanded role in the sequel’s development, Inafune became known as the “Father” of Mega Man to plenty of fans, and codified many of the traditions and patterns the series is known for.

Middle-Earth: Shadow of War, Danger Zone, Guardians of the Galaxy Episode 4, more added to Xbox Store
I’m not sure Kenny Loggins knew what he was about to unleash upon the world when he recorded “Danger Zone” in the late 80s. But after adding extra cool points to Top Gun and inspiring countless jokes on Archer, the phrase was borrowed by Three Fields for Danger Zone, their Burnout-inspired vehicular crack ’em up… and it’s now available to download for the Xbox One.
Also available to download for the Xbox One today are two big franchise games… WB Games and Monolith’s Middle-Earth: Shadow of War (which is also an Xbox Play Anywhere title) and Telltale’s Guardians of the Galaxy – Episode 4: Who Needs You.

Nintendo made a musical trailer for Super Mario Odyssey… The Mummy Demastered will be released on October 24
Two games tower above all others on October’s release calendar… Super Mario Odyssey and The Mummy Demastered.
While the appeal of Mario’s next adventure is obvious, WayForward’s adaptation of a Tom Cruise bomb is a bit more surprising. But the developer has jettisoned anything to do with the actor and delivered a retro-inspired “MetroidVania” shooter. And now we know when it’ll be released.
Oh, and Nintendo transformed Super Mario Odyssey into a musical for the game’s latest trailer.
Enjoy both after the break. (more…)
