Sega Forever program will bring their classic games to mobile devices as free-to-play apps

You don’t have to dig very far to find a swath of Sega-published apps on the App Store for your favorite mobile device. And that includes classic re-releases of dozens of games that originally appeared on the Master System, Genesis, and Dreamcast.

But this morning, the publisher announced “Sega Forever,” a new initiative that’ll re-release these re-releases as ad-supported free-to-play apps through the iOS App Store and Google Play Store. The program will kick off on June 22 with the re-release of five classic games, including Sonic the Hedgehog, Phantasy Star II, Comix Zone, Kid Chameleon, and Altered Beast:

Sega Forever Titles Available on June 22

  • Sonic The Hedgehog, the 1991 household classic that has remained at the forefront of hearts and minds since inception
  • Phantasy Star II, the longtime fan-favourite RPG from 1989
  • Comix Zone and Kid Chameleon, two American titles developed by Sega’s in-house studio STI
  • Altered Beast, the original Genesis pack-in title, a beat-em-up set in Ancient Greece that represents a weird and wonderful segment of the Sega catalogue that is ripe for rediscovery

All games in the Sega Forever lineup will be redesigned to work on mobile devices, and also include cloud saves, controller support, and leaderboards. You’ll also be able to remove the ads from each game for $1.99 apiece.

More titles will be added to the Sega Forever collection every two weeks, and to get an idea of which ones** will be coming soon, you should check out the wonderfully retro trailer embedded above.

** I spotted Shinobi, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic CD, Golden Axe, and Crazy Taxi, but I’m sure I missed some.

PS Store This Week: Nex Machina, Dead By Daylight, MXGP 3, more

Now that the 2017 E3 Expo is in the rearview mirror, we can look forward to a big new PlayStation Store update…

This week, Housemarque has teamed up with the legendary Eugene Jarvis to bring Nex Machina to the PS4. The twin-stick shooter takes place in a dystopian future where machines have taken over and mankind must fight back. Sounds like the perfect playground for the creator of Robotron 2084 and Smash TV.

Also available this week is Dead by Daylight, a multiplayer game for the PS4 where one players controls a deranged Killer, and four others attempt to escape their gruesome fate as the Survivors. It’ll be joined on Friday by Get Even, a first-person puzzler from Bandai Namco that plays with reality.

Finally, racing onto the PS4 this week is MXGP 3, the latest motorcycle racing sim from Milestone; and Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood, a new expansion for Square Enix’s MMORPG.

You can learn more about all of these games (and a few other new releases) after the break. (more…)

343 Industries has no plans to unveil Halo 6 in 2017

Microsoft doesn’t want to talk about the far-flung future right now. All the games on display at the consolemaker’s E3 Press Conference are set to launch fairly soon, and that meant there was no room to talk about Halo 6 on gaming’s big stage.

According to Jeff Easterling, “GrimBrother One” at 343 Industries, that stance won’t be changing anytime soon. Writing on Halo Waypoint, Easterling revealed that Microsoft and 343 Industries have no plans to talk about Halo 6 at all this year:

That being said, for some people – like most who are still reading this blog – the Xbox media briefing was bandied about as much for what it didn’t show, as what it did. Specifically, a new (or old-made-new) Halo title. For some folks, their despair stemmed from a lack of remastered fight-finishing. I know I know, we should have told you ahead of time to not expect anything like that. Others were hoping for a tease of things farther off to come. While there’s little to nothing that can be said on that front, it’s been made clear that we won’t be talking about Halo’s next major title for quite some time. And no, that doesn’t mean Gamescom. Or PAX. Trust us, when we’re ready to begin pulling back that proverbial curtain, you’ll know. It won’t be soon.

Halo Wars 2was released earlier this year, and is the most recent addition to the vast Halo franchise. A new expansion for Halo Wars 2, Awakening the Nightmare, was unveiled at E3 2017, and it’ll be available this Fall.

WWE 2K18’s cover will feature wrestler Seth Rollins

This year’s “Hey, You Know E3 Was Last Week, Right?” Award goes to 2K Games, who inexplicably announced a handful of details about WWE 2K18 today… including the reveal of cover athlete Seth Rollins.

“As the WWE 2K18 cover Superstar and franchise ambassador, it is my incredible honor and mission to ensure this game will truly BE LIKE NO ONE – a calling card perfect for everything I stand for – as it sets forth on its own unique path,” said Rollins. “Following in the footsteps of other WWE 2K cover Superstars – Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, John Cena, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and Brock Lesnar – I now carry the torch and proudly represent a new generation of WWE Superstars. I am the future, and the future can’t be stopped.”

2K Games announced that WWE 2K18 will also be released in a special Collector’s Edition, as well as a feature-packed Deluxe Edition. Details about the Collector’s Edition will be released at a later date, but the Deluxe Edition will include exclusive packaging, the Season Pass, and to-be-announced in-game content available at launch.

WWE 2K18 will be released for the PS4 and Xbox One on October 17. But players who purchase the Deluxe Edition or Collector’s Edition will receive their copy of the game four days early on Friday, October 13.

Detroit: Become Human won’t be released until 2018

GameSpot got up with Quantic Dreams’s David Cage during last week’s E3 Expo, and they got the developer to admit that Detroit: Become Human won’t be released this year.

Back in January, Sony teased a possible 2017 launch for Detroit, but it looks like that’s definitely not happening now. When asked by GameSpot, Cage said, “We’ve not announced a date, but it’s going to be next year.”

Cage also touches on how Detroit focuses on “real-world issues” in the interview, as well as what players who weren’t fans of Heavy Rain or Beyond: Two Souls might get out of it.

Detroit: Become Human is in development exclusively for the PS4, and

Gun Media is adding Jason’s retro-tastic purple-and-blue look to Friday the 13th

Gun Media and Illfonic’s Friday the 13th has been plagued by server connection problems since its launch last month.

As an apology, the publisher and developer have revealed that the game’s first Content Update will include a special treat for fans… a “Retro Jason” costume patterned after his blue-skinned appearance in the infamous NES game from LJN. Naturally, the iconic slasher will also be dressed in his stylish purple jumpsuit as well.

The free update will be available beginning June 20, and it’ll also include two new Outfits for each Counselor, 13,000 Customization Points, and a new chiptune soundtrack from composer Mitch Murder.

In addition to all this “Cool Free Shit,” Friday the 13th players will also get the chance to take part in a Double XP Weekend from June 23rd through the 25th.
