Kerbal Space Program, Song of the Deep, Ghostbusters, more added to PS Store

Explore the unknown in this week’s PlayStation Store update…

They say that space is the final frontier, and PS4 owners will get the chance to explore it this week with Kerbal Space Program and Adrift. Kerbal Space Program is a space exploration simulator that’s been available for the PC since last year, and now PS4 players can use it to build rockets and take off for the inky blackness of space. But don’t get too lost out there, or you’ll end up in Adrift, an “immersive first-person experience” about an astronaut helplessly floating amongst the wreckage of a space station.

Other people will say that the deep ocean is the last unexplored location on Earth, and they’re not wrong. Insomniac tapped into this weird world to tell the story of Merryn, a young girl searching for her father underneath the waves in Song of the Deep for the PS4.

Still others will say that life’s biggest mysteries involve “the other side,” and while they aren’t afraid of ghosts, I don’t know if they were expecting Ghostbusters from Activision. Built as a tie-in to the upcoming film, Ghostbusters is an overhead shooter for the PS4 where up to four players can get together for some bustin’ (provided it makes them feel good).

Finally this week, two wacky new sports attempt to scratch that mutliplayer itch on the PS4. Videoball is a bizarre combination of “basketball, football, soccer, first-person shooters, and real-time strategy games” from Iron Galaxy, while Kill Strain is a free-to-play shooter that pits humans against mutants (and its currently exclusively available for PlayStation Plus subscribers).

You can learn more about all of these games (and a few other new release) after the break. And be sure to visit the PlayStation Blog for the complete rundown of this week’s new add-ons and discounts. (more…)

Call of Duty: Zombies comic book miniseries will launch in October

callofdutyzombiesnumberoneThe Call of Duty: Zombies universe will expand this Fall with the launch of a Call of Duty: Zombies miniseries from Dark Horse Comics. Based on a story by Treyarch developers Jason Blundell and Craig Houston, Call of Duty: Zombies will be written by Justin Jordan (Green Lantern: New Guardians) and illustrated by Jonathan Wayshak (Devolution).

The series will span six issues, with the first scheduled to be released on October 19…

On his quest to secure an ancient artifact known as The Kronorium, Doctor Edward Richtofen enlists the help of The Tranzit Crew, a rag tag group of survivors last seen in the Black Ops II Zombies installment “Buried.” On a deeply unstable and fractured future Earth, Stuhlinger, Misty, Russman, and Marlton battle for survival against the undead horde, as they slowly uncover the truth behind Richtofen’s mysterious reappearance. The Call of Duty: Zombies miniseries follows these characters’ perilous journey of discovery, filling in crucial pieces of the larger Zombies story.

Call of Duty fans can get a sneak peek at the comic adaptation at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, where Blundell will be a guest during Dark Horse’s Comics & Video Games panel on Thursday, July 21, at 8:00 PM (Eastern Time). In addition to talking about the comic miniseries, the developer will also “shed light onto some of the secrets hidden within the Call of Duty: Zombies saga.”

Blizzard unveils Overwatch’s first post-launch Hero… “Support Sniper” Ana Amari

Blizzard plans to expand Overwatch in the coming months with a number of new Heroes, and the publisher revealed the first this afternoon.

Ana Amari is a “Support Sniper” who’ll be able to revitalize her allies (damage opponents) with darts fired from her Biotic Rifle. The character’s stash of Biotic Grenades will feature similar healing properties when engaged in close-quarters combat.

Overwatch players who want to get a sneak peek at how Ana will operate should check out the gameplay trailer embedded above. And everyone who’s curious about her place in the game’s lore should watch the “Origins” trailer after the break. Apparently, Ana worked closely with the first generation of Overwatch Heroes (including Reaper and Soldier 76), and she’s also known as mom to the offensively-minded Pharah. More details about Ana can be found at the official Play Overwatch site.

Ana Amari, and all of Overwatch’s downloadable Heroes, will be available for free on the PC, PS4, and Xbox One sometime in the near future. (more…)

Paramount is adapting DICE’s Battlefield franchise as a television series

Paramount Television and Anonymous Content have announced plans to produce a television series based on DICE’s Battlefield franchise. It’s too early in the process to talk about casting or airdates, but all the executives involved in the deal seem pleased…

“Paramount TV actively seeks smart content from all sectors that will resonate with audiences and translate to compelling programming,” said Amy Powell, the President of Paramount TV. “EA’s Battlefield has an incredibly dynamic narrative, coupled with a loyal fan base, which will allow us to bring this exciting and unique property to the small screen. We look forward to working with EA and Anonymous Content and thank Michael Sugar for his tenacity in bringing us this exciting project.”

“Battlefield has a tremendous built-in, engaged fan base, making it a highly coveted piece of IP primed for long-form adaptation,” said Executive Producer Michael Sugar. “Together with EA and Paramount TV, we’ll develop the Battlefield TV series with the same commitment to robust storytelling that has made the game such a runaway success for nearly fifteen years.”

“Battlefield is one of the most loved properties among our players,” said Patrick Söderlund, EA’s Executive Vice President. “We are thrilled that Anonymous Content and Paramount TV will look to introduce fans to Battlefield through a new medium.”

The Battlefield franchise began in 2002 as Battlefield 1942. Over the years, the franchise has explored multiple eras of combat including the Vietnam War (Battlefield: Vietnam), modern-day conflicts (Battlefield 2, Battlefield 3, and Battlefield 4), and the far-future (Battlefield 2142). And this Fall’s Battlefield 1 will take the series back to World War I. We don’t know which of these eras will receive the adaptation treatment, but anthologies are all the rage on television these days…

Here’s a new CoD: Black Ops III Descent DLC Pack trailer ahead of tomorrow’s launch

Call of Duty: Black Ops III players on the PS4 will be able to download the Descent DLC Pack beginning tomorrow… which makes it the perfect time for Activision to release a trailer focusing on the four new multiplayer maps.

With the Descent DLC Pack, players will be able to battle it out in “Empire” (“an authentic Roman villa”), “Cryogen” (a futuristic prison heavily inspired by Demolition Man), “Rumble” (a stadium built for fights between giant robots), and “Berserk” (“a Viking village frozen in time”).

If you’re more interested in the new Zombies map, you might want to know that Sid Shuman of the PlayStation Blog will invite Treyarch’s Director of Zombies, Jason Blundell, to his studio for a special livestream tomorrow at 1:00 PM (Eastern Time).

The Descent DLC Pack will also be available for download on the PC and Xbox One sometime in August.

Pokemon Go will get Pokemon trading, new Gym features, leaderboards in future update

pokemongo-header

It’s official, Pokemon Go is a blockbuster. Since its release last week, the game’s overwhelming success has caused a complete server overload and a $10 billion bump to Nintendo’s value as a company.

But what does the future hold for Pokemon Go? Speaking to Business Insider, Niantic CEO John Hanke said that we can expect big improvements to come to the game soon, and that includes Pokemon trading.

“[Trading is] kind of a core element,” Hanke says.

While he didn’t go into specifics as to how this would work, Hanke says that trading ties in nicely with one of “Pokemon Go’s” core virtues, which is that it encourages players to interact with each other in both the virtual and real worlds. Swapping Pokémon around would foster those kinds of interactions.

Hanke also confirmed the developer plans to add more activities to the Gyms and PokeStops players can visit, as well as improvements to the game’s augmented reality technology. A global leaderboard is also in the works to see who really can catch ’em all.
