Ninja Theory will bring Hellblade to the PC too

hellblade-header

Ninja Theory has announced that Hellblade will be released for the PC in a short post on the game’s development blog. Previously announced for the PS4, Hellblade is a third-person action title that mixes swordplay with Celtic imagery.

The developer has yet to announce a release date for either version of Hellblade, but I suggest biding your time by exploring some of the absolutely stunning concept art available on the game’s official website.

All three games will be competing for the “Seumas McNally Grand Prize” against Klei’s Invisible Inc., Team Outer Wilds’ Outer Wilds, and Patrick Smith’s Metamorphabet.

You can find a complete list of finalists and honorable mentions for all six awards (including “Excellence In Visual Art,” “Excellence In Narrative,” “Excellence In Design,” “Excellence In Audio,” and the “Nuovo Award”) and the Student Showcase after the break. (more…)

Gearbox promises “never-before-seen reveals” at PAX South 2015

gearbox-logoIt wouldn’t be PAX without an “Inside Gearbox Software” panel, so it’s a good thing that the developers of Borderlands and Aliens: Colonial Marines have decided to attend the inaugural PAX South convention. But PAX South’s San Antonio setting is practically in Gearbox’s Plano backyard, so I guess this news shouldn’t be much of a surprise. However, what will be surprising is whatever Gearbox plans to talk about as the PAX South Schedule has confirmed that the developer will make several exclusive announcements during their panel:

This is your opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at Gearbox Software and get the latest news and updates on Borderlands and upcoming Gearbox titles! We will have never-before-seen reveals, exclusives and surprises, so don’t miss out!

We know that Gearbox is hard at work on Battleborn, a “first person shooter with MOBA elements,” but maybe they’ve got something completely unexpected planned for fans too. We’ll all find out together on January 25, the last day of PAX South 2015.

stateofdecay-header

Undead Labs has revealed (via their Facebook page) that a release date for State of Decay: Year One Survival Edition will be announced during this year’s PAX South. State of Decay’s Year One Survival Edition is in development for the Xbox One as well as the PC and will be downloadable and through the Xbox Games Store/Steam and as a physical disc release.

The developer is also promising to reveal “answers to at least some of your questions” about the enhanced re-release of their popular zombie game during the show, which will be held at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas. The good news is that we won’t have to wait long as the expo kicks off in just two weeks (January 23-25).

Zombie Army Trilogy brings Zombie Hitler to PC, PS4, Xbox One in 2015

Zombie Hitler.

That’s everything you need to know about Rebellion’s upcoming Zombie Army Trilogy, a game that takes place during an alternate World War II where Zombie Hitler leads an army of Nazi Zombies. Zombie Army Trilogy began life in 2013 as a spinoff/standalone expansion to Rebellion’s popular Sniper Elite V2. A sequel became available eight months later with plans to conclude the series in a third game sometime last year. It looks like those plans got put on hold so Rebellion could also bring the game to the PS4 and Xbox One.

According to Rebellion, Zombie Army Trilogy will include 15 missions that are playable solo or cooperatively by up to four players. A set of five survival maps for Horde Mode and nine playable characters will round out the package. Oh, and did I mention that you get to cap it off with a battle against Zombie Hitler? Because you do.

Zombie Army Trilogy will “rise” in early 2015.

Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition is coming to the 3DS

Puzzle & Dragons is a match-3 mobile game that is extremely popular in Japan and reasonably well-regarded in the rest of the world (though lagging behind big hitters like Angry Birds and Clash of Clans). If you’re not one of the game’s 41 million players, that may change when developer GungHo teams up with Nintendo to bring a Mario-themed version of the game to the 3DS as Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition.

The Super Mario Bros. Edition of Puzzle & Dragons will be released in Japan on April 29, but GungHo has confirmed that a North American release is also in the cards:

As the publisher, Nintendo will likely announce a North American release date for Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition soon.

Insert Quarter: Why Is the PS4 Selling So Well?

insertquarter-header

Insert Quarter is our showcase for some of the best and most interesting writing about video games on the Internet.

Sony recently announced that they’ve sold more 18.5 million PlayStation 4 consoles since the system debuted more than a year ago. It’s an astonishing number, and well ahead of the Wii U (almost eight million, per Nintendo) and Xbox One (around nine million is our guess). But exactly why is the PS4 selling so well? Paul Tassi of Forbes attempted to get to the bottom of it, but the answer may be, “Who knows?”:

The picture is clear, and it’s not even close. Fanboy camps aside, Sony is absolutely crushing its competition this console generation in terms of sales, and its strong start didn’t just last through the release window, as it’s now over a year since launch. The PS4 is approaching a quarter of the total sales of the PS3 in just the first year, dramatically outpacing the last-generation console’s launch. It hasn’t quite reached Wii levels of sales insanity, but that was a console sold to everyone from toddlers to grandparents, and the PS4 has no such “fad appeal” to non-gamers.
