DICE will unveil Battlefield 4 on March 26 at GDC 2013

battlefield4-header

A little over a week ago, Electronic Arts sent out an email to members of the media inviting them to “Save the Date” for a special announcement during the Game Developers Conference. Yesterday, they sent out a second round of invitations confirming that the event, which will take place on March 26 at 7 PM (Pacific Time), will feature a first look at Battlefield 4.

Back in 2011, Battlefield 3 made its debut during a similar presentation at the Game Developer Conference. And it was available in stores less than a year later. So I think it’s safe to assume that Battlefield 4 will follow a similar schedule and we should all be playing it by Christmas.

Previously, the only we’d received of Battlefield 4 was the promise that Medal of Honor: Warfighter purchasers would be invited to take part in the game’s beta. So it’s assumed that the game will launch on the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360, with a PS4 port a possibility.

Just Stop! Hey Kojima, WE KNOW You’re Behind The Phantom Pain

When the Internet decides to collectively believe something that’s just not true, we have to cry out… Just Stop! This is what’s making a Warp Zoned editor rip his computer from the wall in frustration today…

It’s not the Internet-at-large that’s bugging me today, but instead it’s one man: Hideo Kojima. Actually, it’s two men, as Joakim Mogren, the CEO of Swedish game developer Moby Dick Studio, is most definitely not Hideo Kojima. But who is he, really? Some say it’s Cliff Bleszinski in disguise. Is the man formerly known as CliffyB really behind Moby Dick’s first game, The Phantom Pain? Or is it just some actor keeping the world in suspense until Kojima reveals his connection to the game at this year’s Game Developers Conference? Whoever’s behind The Phantom Pain, they think they’re being clever.

No! Just Stop! YOU. ARE. WRONG. (more…)

Saints Row IV goes intergalactic on August 20

saintsrow4-header

The Saints are back! After being purchased by Deep Silver at the THQ auction, developer Volition is ready to unveil Saints Row IV, the next game in the popular open-world series. Continuing the bigger is better mentality of the last two games, Saints Row IV will take everyone’s favorite gang into outer space to battle an alien scourge known as Zinyak. Oh yeah, I can’t wait to see the weapons in this one.

In the next open-world installment of Saints Row, Volition continues the story of the Third Street Saints by elevating their status to the highest level – the leaders of the free world. In Saints Row IV, the head honcho of the Saints has been elected to the Presidency of the United States. But the Saints are just getting started. Now the larger-than-life insanity of the Saints series gets a new twist with a catastrophic alien invasion, and the aliens have transported the Saints to a bizarro-Steelport simulation. Wield gargantuan superpowers and fight to free humanity from alien granddaddy Zinyak’s mental grasp. Escape the simulation that’s trapped the Saints crew, or die trying.

Saints Row IV will be released for “current-generation consoles” and the PC on August 20. You can find the first three screenshots after the break and if you’re attending next week’s PAX East convention, you can check out a closed-door Saints Row IV presentation at Deep Silver’s booth. (more…)

Moby Dick CEO says “all your Phantom Pain questions will be answered” at GDC

Moby Dick Studio’s CEO, Joakim Mogren, emerged from his Swedish exile last night to sit down for an interview with Geoff Keighley of GameTrailers TV. Mogren offered to meet Keighley at a “secret hotel room,” with his face bandaged, to discuss Moby Dick’s first game, The Phantom Pain.

The interview is the opening segment of the episode and it does little to dissuade the Internet detectives who believe The Phantom Pain is just a front for Metal Gear Solid 5. Mogren revealed that he’ll be attending this year’s Game Developers Conference (Hideo Kojima will also be there, by the way) with a brand new Phantom Pain trailer, which he promised “will answer all of your questions.” He then pulled out an iPad to show Keighley a few new screenshots of the game and… dun dun dun… the final two screenshots were tagged with the Fox Engine logo.

Hmm, I guess Kojima’s comments that he only “inspired” The Phantom Pain’s trailer weren’t entirely accurate, now were they?

Raven is a go for Injustice: Gods Among Us

NetherRealm Studios has added another DC Comics favorite to the playable cast of Injustice: Gods Among Us… the popular Teen Titan known as Raven! You can check out her very Ermac-like telekinesis and Noob Saibot-like soul energy blasts in the trailer above as she battles Catwoman on the streets of Gotham City.

Injustice: Gods Among Us will be released for the PS3, Wii U, and Xbox 360 on April 16.

The Phantom Pain developer will be on GameTrailers TV tonight

Remember The Phantom Pain? The vaguely Metal Gear Solid-like game made its debut at last year’s Spike TV Video Game Awards and left most gamers awaiting the day that Hideo Kojima would confirm it was connected to the further adventures of Solid Snake. That day still hasn’t come and a recent appearance by Moby Dick Studio’s Joakim Mogren may have put a damper on the whole Kojima connection.

Mogren will appear on tonight’s GameTrailers TV in an interview with host Geoff Keighley. Keighley revealed (via Twitter) that Mogren sat down for their interview in disguise:

He also confirmed (again via Twitter) that the man who claims to be Mogren definitely wasn’t Hideo Kojima. He even showed Keighley a few never-before-seen images from The Phantom Pain.

GameTrailers TV airs tonight at 1 AM (Eastern Time) on Spike TV.

Modder discovers “offline mode” for SimCity

simcity-header

The SimCity debacle reared its ugly head again today and it continues to look bad for EA.

The latest Godzilla stomp on EA’s city simulation is the news that a modder has discovered an offline “debug mode” that bypasses the always-online requirement of the game. EA has always maintained that their servers provide constant computational support to SimCity players, but this debug mode paints the always-online requirement as little more than a backdoor DRM scheme.

This backs up a recent anonymous tip reported by Rock, Paper, Shotgun that claims SimCity doesn’t require an Internet connection.

“The servers are not handling any of the computation done to simulate the city you are playing. They are still acting as servers, doing some amount of computation to route messages of various types between both players and cities. As well, they’re doing cloud storage of save games, interfacing with Origin, and all of that. But for the game itself? No, they’re not doing anything. I have no idea why they’re claiming otherwise.”

However this brouhaha resolves itself, I think EA’s mayoral aspirations are over.
