Madden NFL 25 chosen as name of this year’s game; Cover Vote begins March 11

madden2014-announcement-header

After teasing us yesterday with the above image, EA Sports has officially announced this year’s version of Madden NFL Football. But instead of carrying the name Madden NFL 14 like we all expected, the game will instead be known as Madden NFL 25 in celebration of the franchise’s 25th anniversary. This is really going to confuse people when the year 2024 rolls around.

“There’s no better way to celebrate and mark the culmination of 25 years of innovation than by naming this year’s game Madden NFL 25,” said Cam Weber, General Manager of American Football for EA Sports. “This year’s game will push the boundaries with gameplay and feature innovations that will lay a very strong foundation for the next 25 years of this storied franchise.”

EA also announced that this year’s Madden Cover Vote will begin on March 11. For Madden NFL 25, the team at EA Tiburon is going back in time to pit 32 NFL legends against 32 current players. Like last year, the bracket will be unveiled live on ESPN2’s SportsNation.

Madden NFL 25 is in development for the PS3 and Xbox 360 and will be released on August 27.

Madden NFL 14 will celebrate 25th anniversary of the series on August 27

madden2014-announcement-header

Stop the presses! EA Sports has announced that Madden NFL 14 will be released on August 27. Giving the green light to another Madden game was surely a tough decision for company executives, but they’ve decided to give the team at EA Tiburon another chance.

Madden NFL 14 will be the 25th annual release in the series, stretching all the way back to 1989’s John Madden Football. In fact, EA is even asking gamers to “Check back soon for more details regarding Madden 25.” So it might not be known as Madden NFL 14 at all.

I wonder how John Madden wants to celebrate his silver anniversary? I’m guessing with a nice, juicy piece of turducken.

Sony is revealing “the future” of PlayStation on February 20

Sony is no stranger to the practice of teasing gamers with a fancy trailer and promises of a big announcement only to reveal another trailer (in fact, they did it yesterday). But the consolemaker has announced that their next big announcement will be revealed to the world on February 20 at 6 PM (Eastern Time). The teaser trailer above, dubbed “See the future,” includes a lot of pretty colors and four familiar shapes (a Circle, a Triangle, an X, and an O).

So what future should we be on the lookout for, Sony? Is it the PlayStation 4/Orbis? A Vita refresh? A new entry in a long-running series for the PS3?

Or is it just another stupid commercial for a commercial? As they say, “once burned, twice shy,” so you’ll forgive me if I’m not jumping up and down over yet another teaser trailer… yet.

Grand Theft Auto V release date set for September 17

grandtheftautov-logoWhen I think about Spring, I think about Easter, PAX East, and baseball. What I don’t normally think about is the month of September. But I guess the folks at Rockstar Games think a bit differently from me as they’ve announced that the official release date for Grand Theft Auto V will be September 17, 2013. Let me just check a calendar… nope, September definitely doesn’t fall within the Springtime.

According to Rockstar, the additional development time is required to create the “massively ambitious and complex game” and that it “simply needs a little more polish to be of the standard we and, more importantly, you require.”

I guess we can stop referring to May as the month of Rockstar, huh?

Sony unveils teaser for God of War: Ascension Super Bowl ad

Do you know how you know you’ve crossed over into the twilight zone? I do. You enter the twilight zone when a video game publisher releases a cryptic teaser trailer like yesterday’s “Game Day” video, which is itself a teaser for another teaser trailer they released less than 24 hours later.

Got all that? Yeah, it doesn’t make any sense to me either.

But that’s just what Sony did. On Tuesday, the publisher pushed out the 17-second “Game Day” teaser that promises a further reveal on February 1. Today, Sony released a slightly longer teaser trailer for what we now know is a God of War: Ascension Super Bowl ad. This teaser again ends with the promise of more details on February 1. It’s neat, but it also makes the “Game Day” video a teaser of a teaser of a trailer.

And who wants to be the one to tell Sony that Super Bowl XLVII is actually scheduled for February 3?
