Progress on The Last Guardian is “slow,” Sony not ready to talk about “timing of launch”
There has been a lot of talk about The Last Guardian – GameStop saying it was cancelled and Fumito Ueda leaving Sony Japan are two of the biggest things. But in an interview with Wired, Shuhei Yoshida shed some light on what’s going on with the game.
Yoshida had a lot of good things to say about Ueda. “He’s on top of the game and coming into the office. He could be the person who’s in the office for the longest time. The difference is that he used to be a regular employee. But now we have a contract to define his role. It’s a very special contribution and role that he plays and we agreed, let’s make it more official, more special. That’s the only difference.”
In spite of the progress, it seems that things don’t have the same momentum they had before. “But the progress is slow and sometimes the team has to go back and review things. There’s a vision that we want to realize but it’s very very tough and technical issue that the team is tackling and some plans have to be made to evaluate and go through the process. At one point the progress was great, so we talked about the timing of the launch in the past. But now it’s making progress, but still not to the level — it’s playable, but not to the point that we can talk about the timing of launch.”
This is a bit discouraging, especially for those of us who definitely want to see the game released, like, next quarter (if not next week). That’s definitely not happening. And it sounds like “sometime in 2012” is no longer a sure thing either. However, my favorite part of the interview with Yoshida was this:
Wired: I’ve heard that people from Sony Santa Monica have gone to Japan to work in tandem, collaborate with the Japan team on this game.
Yoshida: Did you read it on the internet?
Ha! Burn. No, but Sony Santa Monica really is helping with the development of The Last Guardian.

Sony’s Game Design Chief, Shuhei Yoshida, talks UMD Passport, Vita security
Shuhei Yoshida, Game Design Chief at Sony, doesn’t seem to be afraid of Nintendo or the competition from the 3DS in this interview with Wired during the Dice Summit. Yoshida had a lot to say about the Vita, which launched today in the US.
We already knew UMD Passport wasn’t coming to the US, but Yoshia explains why: because the demand for UMD games, and games for the portable systems in general, is much higher in Japan, where the prices are also much higher.
“Lots of people who are interested in trying Vita are also interested in playing PSP games that they might purchase before Vita comes out, and will not necessarily choose the digital version,” Yoshida said. “When the games are already sold at a lower price in the U.S. we see less value in introducing that kind of system.”
And their fear of piracy running as rampant on the Vita as it did on the PSP? “There will always be the effort by those hackers. They are so smart, they’re sharp. But when you compare what happened with PSP to PS3, there are some hacking activities on PS3 but we’ve been doing much better. Our teams in Japan learned a lot and are applying that knowledge to fortifying PS Vita. So hopefully we will have much stronger protection on PS Vita.”
He also talked about the PlayStation Suite, which Sony is “definitely” looking to add sometime this year, to both the Vita and to Android devices.
Daily Scoop: February 22, 2012 – Borderlands 2 edition
Well, I can’t really say it’s a Borderlands 2 edition, per se, but I can confirm that I have watched the trailer three times already, and that I can’t wait until September 18 gets here. I mean seriously – have you seen it? My jaw is still on the floor.
Anyway, let’s see what’s going on in the sale world today! Amazon’s Deal of the Day in video games day is EA Sports’ Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 for $14.99 on the Xbox 360. This is half off the original price, so scoop it up!
And don’t forget about the big used sale going on at GameFly! Is that holiday money burning a hole in your pocket? I know the best way to spend it…
We’ve got not one, but two game-related shirts for you today! One is Mario Kart themed and the other has to do with everyone’s favorite NES cheat code. (more…)

Borderlands 2 trailer, “Doomsday,” dates the game, rips your face off
I don’t often say this, and I don’t usually put much stock in trailers, but damn. I’ve got goosebumps after watching that trailer. I nearly joypuked at my desk. I’m so looking forward to Salvador, Maya, Axton, and, uh, Zero the invisible ninja. This trailer is bigger than life. There’s still going to be four-player co-op, you can catch a new ride (come on get you one!), and there will be more skills – “for the payment of bigger bills.” There’s also a brand new baddie, a tyrant named Handsome Jack, who seems to have some sort of Death Star device. It’s no joke that “we’re gonna need a lotta guns.”
Borderlands 2 will be out on September 18 for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. I don’t know about you, but I’m so ready to get back to Pandora.

Daily Scoop: February 21, 2012 – …and then I took an arrow to the knee
I, for one, am tired of the whole “arrow to the knee” meme, and I haven’t even played Skyrim yet. Does that just make me a jerk? Possibly. Do I care? Not really.
What I do care about are deals! Amazon’s Deal of the Day in video games is Disney Princess: Magical Jewels on the DS. It’s just $9.99 today, which is 50% off the regular price. Scoop it up and you, too, can be a pretty, pretty princess!
Also, GameFly is having a big under $20 blowout sale on their used games! The sale includes some pretty good deals, like Brink for $6.99 on the Xbox 360, Gears of War 2 for $7.99, F.3.A.R. for $9.99 for PS3 and Xbox 360, and Tron: Evolution – Battle Grids for the Wii. Check it out!
Today’s video game t-shirt is a tired meme I may have alluded to already… (more…)
Daily Scoop: February 20, 2012 – Add some Disgaea to your day!
Well I certainly did do a lot of baking this weekend, and a lot of writing, but not nearly as much video gaming as I wanted. I did go to the movies, and play some Dungeons & Dragons, and watched “The Walking Dead,” of course. And ate lots and lots and lots of food. Yum!
So what’s the big deal for today? I’m happy to say it’s Amazon’s Deal of the Day in video games, which is the Premium Edition of Atlus’ Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten. If you’ve never played this series, there’s no better time than now – grab that up for $39.99, and maybe find a cheap deal on the PSP version of Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness, and say goodbye to your free time for the next few… months.
There’s also a fantastic video game related shirt today: (more…)

Modern Warfare 3 “Overwatch” trailer reaches dizzying heights
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3‘s latest Elite Drop, “Overwatch,” will be on top of a New York high rise. You’ll laugh at the overt sexism, appreciate the “cornucopia of sniping nooks and crannies,” and generally drool at how good this looks. Oh, and there’s more Rob Riggle too.
Me? Give me some Nuketown 24/7 and I’m a happy gal.
“Overwatch” will be available on February 21 for Xbox Live for Call of Duty Elite Premium members.
