Gearbox: “Soon, we’ll talk about the next Duke Nukem”

Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford used his company’s panel at PAX Prime to stand defiant against all the naysayers that thought Duke Nukem Forever was better left as vaporware. He admits the game isn’t great, but he hopes that at least some of us had fun with it.

Pitchford also reiterated that the developer isn’t done with Duke. The world’s greatest hero will return someday and while Pitchford wasn’t ready to talk about it yet, he did say that an announcement of a fully gearbox-developed Duke game will be happening soon.

“And then soon… I know that you guys figured out that, when Gearbox acquired the franchise, we didn’t do it just to make sure we could all play Duke Forever, but because we wanted to make our own Duke game. Soon, we’ll talk about that, but not today. [the crowd cheers]”

So with Brothers in Arms: Furious 4, Borderlands 2 and a new Duke Nukem game (possibly the rumored Duke Nukem Begins) it sounds like Gearbox has a lot of balls in the air… let’s hope none of them turn blue.

Daily Scoop: August 30, 2011 – Back to the grind

Another day, another dollar, amirite kids? PAX is over and so is all the fun. It’s time to get back to work. And by work, I mean digging up deals!

Today’s Deal of the Day in video games over at Amazon is Activision’s PS3 Tony Hawk: Ride Skateboard Bundle for the PS3 (obviously). It’s $19.99 down from $39.99, and lets you grind like Tony Hawk, YEAH! Well, just, you know. Without the wheels, or the talent, or the fame.

There’s a fantastic shirt over at Qwertee today called “I Love Science:” (more…)

Tetris released today for free on Android Marketplace

There seems to be a lot of Tetris talk going on today! In addition to the whole Tetris Axis announcement by Nintendo, EA had an announcement of their own – a free version of Tetris was released on the Android Marketplace today.

Vice President of Sales and Marketing Bernard Kim said, “Tetris is one of the most distinctive, well-known and popular video game franchises in the world and it gives EA the opportunity to grow its already-expanding customer base on the Android platform. Tetris has a strong legacy in the mobile gaming world and we’re excited to bring a free version of Tetris to yet another great platform.”

Guess I know what I’ll be doing for the rest of the night!

Tetris: Axis announced for 3DS

Get ready for Tetris like you’ve never seen it before! Tetris: Axis will be released on the 3DS on October 2, bringing a whole new level to a game we all grew up on.

The game features up to 20 different game modes as well as multiplayer battles – up to eight players can fight each other, even if only one has the game. There will also be functionality with both AR cards and SpotPass.

Tetris Axis will kick off the 3DS’ fall lineup, and will be followed by Pokemon Rumble Blast on October 24, Super Mario 3D Land in November, and Mario Kart 7 in December. Hopefully somewhere in there we’ll get an announcement for Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D as well.

Gears of War 3 “Season Pass” announced

Gears of War 3 is taking the L.A. Noire route, offering players the option to purchase a “Season Pass” instead of buying all the DLC separately. The season pass – which comes in at $30, or 2400 Microsoft Points – will save consumers 33% on the total cost of the content.

There will be four installments included in the pass, which will be available when the game launches on September 20. It will also include a special bonus – the “exclusive” Liquid Metal Weapon Set. The first DLC pack will launch in November.

I, for one, am actually into this idea. DLC is so ridiculously expensive initially and ends up dropping to nothing after I stop playing the game. Consider me incentivized.

Professor Layton and the Last Specter dated

Get ready to put on your thinking cap! Professor Layton and the Last Specter will be released on October 17 for the Nintendo DS.

The fourth game in the series, Last Specter will be the first in a new trilogy, set as a prequel to the original trilogy – three years before Professor Layton and the Curious Village. Not only does this game boast the most puzzles in the series, the North American version also has a bonus RPG that will have over 100 hours of extra content.

Excited? I know Ryan Littlefield is.

Halo Fest videos of Halo 4 are badass

Wow. There’s a lot of intensity going on in this panel opening video for Halo 4 from Halo Fest (which was part of this weekend’s PAX Prime). Zelda: Skyward Sword limited edition includes gold Wiimote, soundtrack CD

Nintendo first announced a special limited edition of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword at E3. Today, they’ve unveiled the gold Wii Remote Plus that’ll be bundled with the game as well as a special soundtrack CD featuring music from the 25th Anniversary Symphony concert. But if you’d rather not spend the $69.99 required to get the limited edition, Nintendo plans to include the soundtrack CD with every copy of Skyward Sword. You’d better move fast, though, as the CD will only be included with the “initial production” of the game.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword will be released on November 20. Oh, and Nintendo wants everyone to know the gold Wii Remote Plus will simply be golden in color and will not contain any actual precious metals. Thanks Nintendo!
