Sony calls it quits with the PSP Go
As Scott Pilgrim and yours truly are probably the only two individuals on Earth who actually own a PSP Go, Sony has officially cancelled production and shipment of the all-digital handheld. Sony’s online stores have stopped listing the device since a few days ago and an alleged Sony employee confirmed the cancellation. Only the currently shipped units will be available.
This news couldn’t have come at a more ironic time, as Square Enix has finally begun releasing their PSP titles digitally on the PlayStation Store.
Despite its poor sales performance and lack of parity with the UMD-using PSPs, I have to say the PSP Go was a great machine. Smaller and lighter than an iPhone, with the broad media functionality of a PlayStation product, the Go is the ideal MP3 player, video player, and game console in one. Probably the most portable gaming handheld ever, it’s also a lot more comfortable for folks with big hands like myself. R.I.P., PSP Go; hopefully the NGP will get something like you.

Freddy and Jason WON’T be appearing in Mortal Kombat
The Mortal Kombat reboot has been available for one day, and rumors of secret characters have already arisen. Those rumors state that NetherRealm Studios will add horror icons Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees to Mortal Kombat in a future DLC package. But as awesome as that would be, it’s just not true.
The basis for this rumor appears to be a misreading of Ed Boon‘s recent tweets. The Mortal Kombat creator has taken to Twitter over the last few days offering congratulations and kind words to the Mortal Kombat team for a job well done on the latest game in the series. It looks like it was this message that sparked the Freddy vs Jason vs Mortal Kombat rumors:
You know who animated Smoke’s X-ray move? That would be Senior Animator Freddy Palma. Maybe we should put Freddy in the game as DLC?
Deleted: Boon is clearly referring to Freddy Palma, and not Freddy Krueger, in the tweet and then overeager fans filled in the rest. But the idea of Freddy and Jason in Outworld isn’t so crazy. In addition to publishing Mortal Kombat, Warner Bros. owns the rights to both Krueger and Jason. So legally, there’s no barrier to this happening if Warner Bros. wanted it to happen.
Attention WB Games… As a longtime fan of Mortal Kombat, the Friday the 13th films, and (some of) the Nightmare on Elm Street films, I would very much like to see this happen.
UPDATE: Wow. Freddy Krueger was just announced as the final DLC addition to Mortal Kombat.

Daily Scoop: April 20, 2011 – Portal 2 hangover
I don’t know about you, but I’ve got a ferocious gaming hangover. And, much like a regular hangover, what I need is some hair of the dog to set me right. Going home and playing more Portal 2 is obviously the only way I’m going to feel better right now.
The world seems to be on a video game sale hangover as well. Today’s Amazon Deal of the Day in video games is Activision’s NASCAR The Game 2011. Both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions are $39.99 down from $59.99 today only.
There are no good daily t-shirts, and while there are lots of other sales this week, there’s really not much new to report. Not like anyone really needs anymore games after yesterday. Whew. I’m spent.

Team Ico Collection, Last Guardian delayed
While it’s no surprise that the Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection and The Last Guardian have both been delayed, it certainly is a disappointment to have the delay made official. According to the PlayStation Blog, both games have been bumped from their expected launch dates – Spring ’11 for the Collection and Holiday ’11 for The Last Guardian. Fumito Ueda cited the postponement as needing more time “to provide more challenging and better quality of content to users and to fulfill First Party Studio’s obligations.” He also apologizes and begs for our patience, adding that “all the members of my production team are working together at a fast pace to develop and release the game in First Party Studio quality.”
As I said, I can’t say I’m surprised, but I am disappointed. I’ve had the Team Ico Collection pre-ordered since it was announced, and I was really looking forward to replaying both games with all the added features. Here’s hoping that will at least be released in time for the holidays.

Capcom pledges Resident Evil 6 will be “totally different”

Capcom’s Masachika Kawata, a prolific producer on the Resident Evil series, recently released a statement about (the currently unannounced) Resident Evil 6 in an interview with Spanish gaming site MarcaPlayer. It was translated by the folks at RelyOnHorror and points to a new direction for the survival horror franchise:
“The series will see a complete renovation with the next entry on every level. But we can’t forget about all the previous entries that have led to the creation of many possibilities for the franchise. I can’t say if we’re going to make [Resident Evil 6] survival horror or a shooter, but I can say that it’ll be totally different.”
Capcom plans to release five Resident Evil games this year (which is the 15th anniversary of the series), so don’t expect any real information on Resident Evil 6 for a while yet.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D extras announced, include Boss Rush mode
Hey! Listen! Link (and Navi) are happy to share that Nintendo has announced some of the extras for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. In addition to the Master Quest, which is a more challenging playthrough of the game, there’s also Boss Rush. In this mode, you can fight bosses you’ve already defeated, or even take them on in one nonstop battle. That sounds hardcore, which is just what OoT fans want right now.
CVG is also speculating that there will be a “Super Guide” as well. They quoted Nintendo as saying, “Players not so familiar to the Legend of Zelda series can also get a helping hand through bite sized videos available in-game, which will provide hints on how to solve puzzles encountered during your journey.”
This all sounds better and better. The remake, which is being developed by Grezza – helmed by Secret of Mana creator, Kouichi Ishii – will be out June 19.

Check out CoD: Black Ops Escalation Map Pack trailer
Treyarch has unveiled the first trailer for the second Call of Duty: Black Ops map pack, Escalation. The developers discuss what gamers can expect from the four new maps: “Zoo,” an abandoned Russian zoo; “Hotel,” a 1960s-style vacation spot that is also abandoned; “Convoy,” an abandoned truck stop (am I sensing a theme here?) and “Stockpile,” an abandoned weapons depot (yup, definite theme).
Treyarch was less forthcoming about “Call of the Dead,” the new Zombies experience included with Escalation. Apparently, more details of the flesh-eating variety will be revealed in a few days.
The Escalation Map Pack will be available for download first on the Xbox Live Marketplace on May 3rd with PC and PSN availability coming later.
