Many fans at PAX East were disappointed to find that the Chibiterasu special edition plushies sold out the first day. But what they weren’t disappointed about was the fact that Capcom’s DS/3DS lines were far shorter than those across the show floor at Nintendo. Daily Scoop: March 18, 2011 – Let the gaming countdown begin

It’s Friday! And I’m already prepared to be spending the entire night gaming. Is it weird that, since PAX East – three straight days of doing nothing but gaming and writing – all I’ve wanted to do is play games and write? Weird or not, I’m looking forward to doing nothing but that all weekend. Oh yeah, and eating some birthday cake. Bring it on!

No Amazon deal of the day today Amazon listed their Video Game Deal of the Day late today, and it’s a big one: lots and lots of Disney games. This includes (but is not limited to!) the Disney Epic Mickey Collector’s Edition for $48.96 down from $69.99 as well as the TRON: Evolution Collector’s Edition for $79.99 down from $129.99 for both PS3 and Xbox 360. They are also running some other pretty sweet sales, like this Xbox 360 Gearfest, which has some discounts on controllers and chargers. Oh, and if you pre-order Portal 2 at Amazon, you get $5 off the retail price. What are you waiting for? There’s science to do.

Not much in the realm of t-shirts today, unless you count Qwertee’s “Boo Busters” shirt:

I know I’ve seen this design before, but I forget which site had it. Being a rip-off doesn’t make it unworthy of purchase, but in the delicate business of independent t-shirt design, it is…uncool.

Mortal Kombat hooks Kabal in GTTV reveal

The latest episode of GameTrailers TV includes the reveal of another Mortal Kombat character, the masked wasteland dweller Kabal!

Kabal has dropped his Elvis impersonation, but the hook swords and the Spin Dash special move remain, as does his dusty longcoat and Darth Vader-esque breathing apparatus. It might kill any MK cred I have, but Kabal was always one of my favorite characters (Stryker too), so this is welcome news. And check out his gruesome fatality in the video above.

Mortal Kombat will be released for the PS3 and Xbox 360 on April 19. Which can’t come soon enough.

Crysis 2 “Be Fast” trailer has superspeed and superawesome

Amidst all the back and forth over graphical comparisons of Crysis 2 on the PS3 and Xbox 360, Crytek has released a new trailer for the game entitled “Be Fast.”

“Be Fast” refers to the enhanced abilities of the Nanosuit that Alcatraz, “the savior of mankind,” possesses in his battle to stop the invading aliens from annihilating mankind. After all the explosions and gunfire, the trailer ends on a rather ominous note as Hargreave, the man who created the Nanosuits, tell him: “Enjoy this power while you have it, for one day, it will be reclaimed.”

Sequel hook? Perhaps. But until then, Crysis 2 will be in stores for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 next week.

The 2010-2011 Video Game Awards Season

Beginning with the Spike TV Video Game Awards in early December and culminating with last night’s BAFTA Games Awards, the 2010-2011 “video game awards season” has come to a close. And after four months of awards, acceptance speeches and arguments, we have a clearer picture of what really were the best games of the year.

The snobbier segments of the game community love to decry the Spike TV Video Game Awards as an embarrassment and not representative of the feelings of “real” gamers. Typically, the show’s world premiere trailers overshadow the actual awards themselves. But the event is spearheaded by Geoff Keighley of GameTrailers TV and the winners are voted on by a well-respected contingent of game journalists, so I guess it could be worse.

That said, this year’s Spike TV Video Game Awards “Game of the Year” was awarded to Rockstar’s epic western Red Dead Redemption. Keighley and company spread the love as the remaining major awards all went to other games: “Best PC Game” StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty; “Best PS3 Game” God of War III; “Best Wii Game” Super Mario Galaxy 2; “Best Xbox 360 Game” Halo: Reach; “Best Handheld Game” God of War: Ghost of Sparta; and “Best Downloadable Game” Costume Quest.

If Spike TV’s annual awards attempt to reach the mainstream, Time Magazine‘s top ten is the polar opposite, reaching into corners of the gaming world that are often ignored. This year’s selections are no different, including Alan Wake being awarded the #1 spot with iOS phenomenon Angry Birds at #2. The rest of the list was pretty typical, but the lack of Alan Wake’s spiritual twin, Heavy Rain, was the baffling part. Also, Limbo received its first love of the year-end awards with a sixth-place selection. (more…)

Beyond Good & Evil HD comes to PS3 in May with an early bird special

It may have taken a little while but Beyond Good & Evil HD will finally hit the PlayStation 3 this May. No specific date during the month was attached, but users who purchase the game in the first two weeks get two free PSN avatars, Jade and Pey’j. Homefront sells some copies

Homefront has been pushing some units, enough that THQ would want to brag about it. Brian Farrell, THQ President and CEO stated, “we are delighted with first day sales for Homefront and are already fulfilling re-orders for the game from multiple retailers,” which he declared after the game sold more than 375,000 copies in its first day. The game released a few days ago on March 15 in North America and will be following up in Asia Pacific and Europe throughout the rest of the week.

THQ seems to attribute a lot of the success to dedicated servers, as Danny Bilson, EVP Core Games said, ”Homefront’s excellent multiplayer experience, combined with our commitment to dedicated servers, make this a must-have purchase for gamers.”

This Koreo-phobic military shooter is available now on the PC, Xbox 360, and PS3.

Get a Nintendo history lesson this August

David Sheff’s 1993 book Game Over: How Nintendo Zapped an American Industry, Captured Your Dollars, and Enslaved Your Children is considered one of the great “behind-the-scenes” stories about the video game industry. It was updated once in 1999, but has since fallen behind the times, missing out on both the GameCube and Wii eras.

That’ll all change this Summer.

Penguin’s Portfolio imprint will publish Jeff Ryan’s Super Mario: How Nintendo Conquered America, a company history starting with the publisher’s early 80s entry into the American video game market all the way up to the Wii’s domination of this generation:

Nintendo has continually set the standard for video-game innovation in America, starting in 1981 with a plucky hero who jumped over barrels to save a girl from an ape.

The saga of Mario, the portly plumber who became the most successful franchise in the history of gaming, has plot twists worthy of a video game. Jeff Ryan shares the story of how this quintessentially Japanese company found success in the American market. Lawsuits, Hollywood, die-hard fans, and face-offs with Sony and Microsoft are all part of the drama.

Super Mario will be available as a hardcover, audiobook or eBook edition on August 4th.
