Nintendo’s Eiji Aonuma said there is “a possibility” for a 2D Zelda on the Switch

We are getting closer and closer to the launch of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Franchise Producer Eiji Aonuma has decided to share his vision for Link’s future with Game Informer.

With the Nintendo Switch occupying a place in our lives as both a home console and a portable handheld, the magazine asked Aonuma if we’d ever see another 2D Zelda game like 2013’s A Link Between Worlds. The developer replied that the Legend of Zelda’s handheld development team will remain intact and that there’s “definitely a possibility” they could create a 2D Zelda game for the Switch:

“The dev pace is not really dependent on how many people are on a team, so combining them would not necessarily expedite the development pace,” says Aonuma. “The 3DS team and the Wii U team have different approaches to game development, so I don’t necessarily want to combine them and have them think together, but rather have each think about what they can bring to Nintendo Switch from their own perspective.”

Aonuma then offered additional clarification, saying “The handheld development team will not be phased out because of Nintendo Switch. Switch will allow the users to bring their home console on the go, but this doesn’t mean handheld game development like Nintendo 3DS will be discontinued.”

When we asked point-blank if there was a possibility that the 3DS Zelda teams were working on a new game for the Nintendo Switch, Aonuma said, “Yes, there is definitely a possibility.”

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and the Nintendo Switch console, will be released on March 3.

Check out this goofy opening cinematic to Super Bomberman R

When March 3 rolls around, most people will be laser-focused on just a single game for the Nintendo Switch… The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. But nearly a dozen other games will be available for the console when it launches, including Konami’s Super Bomberman R.

The 90s-style throwback features the Bomberman Brothers blasting away at each other for the first time in almost seven years. But this entry in the Bomberman franchise will also include a Story Mode that looks to evoke the goofy Saturday Morning Cartoons from the era. Super Bomberman R’s opening cinematic introduces us to the evil Emperor Bugler, and along with his Five Dastardly Bombers, he wants nothing short of world domination.

Can the Bomberman Brothers stop him? As long as its $50 price tag doesn’t scare you away, I’m going to say… maybe.

Niantic will add more than 80 Pokemon and new features to Pokemon Go this week

It’s time to “Catch ‘Em All” again…

Niantic has announced (via their official website) that Pokemon Go will be expanding once again later this week. The developer plans to add more than 80 new Pokemon from Pokemon Gold and Silver‘s Johto region to Pokemon Go, along with a variety of new features to enhance gameplay:

New Pokemon Go Features

  • Additional Pokemon: More than 80 Pokemon that were originally discovered in the Johto region in the Pokemon Gold and Pokemon Silver video games, as well as Pokemon with gender-specific variations, will start rolling out in Pokemon Go.
  • New Evolutions: There are now more opportunities to evolve your Pokemon in Pokemon Go than ever before. Some Pokemon originally discovered in the Kanto region will soon be able to evolve into Pokemon that inhabit the Johto region! Be on the lookout for new Evolution items at PokeStops, which you’ll need to evolve some Pokemon.
  • New Encounter Gameplay: When you encounter Pokemon in the wild, don’t be surprised if they react in new ways as you’re trying to catch them. You’ll also notice the addition of new item carousels that allow you to select Berries and Poke Balls directly from the encounter screen. Hone your skills and catch those elusive Pokemon!
  • New Berries: Pokemon enjoy eating Berries, and you’ll have the opportunity to get two new Berries by spinning the Photo Disc at PokeStops… Nanab Berries and Pinap Berries! Giving a Pokemon a Nanab Berry will slow its movements, making it easier to catch. The Pinap Berry doubles the amount of Candy you’ll receive if your next catch attempt succeeds.
  • New Avatars and an Expanded Wardrobe: Now you’ll be able to give your avatar a complete upgrade! Customize your look with a whole new selection of hats, shirts, pants, and other items.

A new trailer for Pokemon Go is also available and its been embedded above.

For Honor, Sniper Elite 4, Ride 2, more added to PS Store

Ubisoft’s epic battle between Knights and Vikings and Samurai, For Honor, is now available to download through the PlayStation Store for the PS4. Players will be able to choose their Faction and compete in the game’s online multiplayer battles or fight through the single-player Campaign to claim ultimate victory.

Also available to download for the PS4 this week is Sniper Elite 4, Rebellion’s latest World War II-era shooter. This time, players will engage in missions on the Italian front and attempt to “liberate wartime Italy from the grip of Fascism.”

If you’d prefer to speed around a racetrack instead of going to war, Milestone will release Ride 2 for download on the PS4 this week. Offering more than 170 bikes, this motorcycle racing sim includes plenty of options.

Finally this week, Nidhogg developer Messhof will release Flywrench for the PS4. In Flywrench, players will need to quickly flip the color of their spacecraft to deftly maneuver around a series of obstacles.

More information on all of these games (and a few other new releases) can be found after the break. (more…)

Here Come the Girls… NetherRealm adds Catwoman, Poison Ivy, Cheetah to Injustice 2

One day after digging up Swamp Thing, NetherRealm Studios is back with another batch of character announcements for Injustice 2. But rather than limit themselves to just a single new character, the developer unveiled three fighters of the female persuasion in a brand new gameplay trailer titled “Here Come the Girls.”

“Here Come the Girls” puts the focus on Cheetah (a rival to Wonder Woman) and Catwoman (a master thief and foil to Batman), who will be joining the fight in Injustice 2. In addition to this pair of revealing announcements, the trailer also offers a first look at the previously-confirmed Poison Ivy (another Batman foe) in action.

Injustice 2 will be released for the PS4 and Xbox One on May 16.

Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will receive an Expansion Pass on Switch and Wii U

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will offer the largest world in the franchise’s history for players to explore when it launches early next month. But Nintendo also wants players to reach beyond Hyrule’s borders with bonus content they’re creating for the game’s Expansion Pass.

Priced at $19.99, the Expansion Pass will include two DLC Packs and a trio of “Day One” bonus items:

Expansion Pass Bonus (March 3)

  • 3 Treasure Chests
    • Found in the Great Plateau
    • Contains Switch Logo In-Game Clothing + 2 Other Useful Items

DLC Pack 1 (Summer 2017)

  • Cave of Trials Challenge
  • Hard Mode
  • Additional Map Feature

DLC Pack 1 (Holiday 2017)

  • New Original Story
  • New Dungeon
  • Additional Challenges

“The world of Hyrule, which we created for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, is so large and vibrant that we wanted to offer more for players to experience within it,” said Eiji Aonuma, the Franchise Producer in charge of The Legend of Zelda. “With this new Expansion Pass, we hope that fans will play, explore and enjoy the game even more.”

Nintendo’s announcement of an Expansion Pass for Breath of the Wild is a first for a “mainline” Zelda game, but should feel familiar to fans who purchased the Season Pass for Hyrule Warriors.

And if you aren’t ready to upgrade to the Switch just yet, don’t worry, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s Expansion Pass will be available for the Wii U as well.
