The PAXpocalypse List: The Best of PAX East 2014

paxeast2014-bestof-header

PAX East 2014 was a different type of show than in years past. Some big publishers, such as Nintendo, skipped the show completely, while others, like Microsoft, only brought a handful of unreleased games. This shift in the show floor allowed the indies to take center stage, and the majority of our PAX East 2014 PAXpocalypse List reflects this year’s status quo. But that’s not to say the big publishers skipped PAX East 2014 altogether. Towering displays from 2K, Bethesda, and Ubisoft dominated the exhibition hall map, and we definitely had some fun with a few games that will demand your time during this Summer and Fall.

So if we were cut off from the outside and trapped within the walls of PAX East 2014, which games would we return to over and over again? Well… (more…)

Daily Scoop: April 17, 2014 – Delicious game soundtracks

The big news for today is that there’s a brand new Game Music Bundle! This new bundle, number seven, has 17 albums in total for just $10! You can also get five albums for no more than $1. There’s some really great music here, including lots by Austin Wintory, so I highly recommend picking the bundle up.

Speaking of new bundles, there’s also a brand new Humble Weekly Bundle, this one called Oh Man You Should Totally Check That Game Out, presented by Devolver. Pay what you want for The Real Texas, Cryptic Sea EP, and Dungeon Hearts. Pay $6 or more to unlock Foul Play, Legend of Dungeon (a fantastic game!), and Krunch. Pay $10 to unlock Tower of Guns.

Finally, there are some new deals at Steam as well. The Weekend Deal is 80% off Frozen Synapse, marking it down to $4.99. It’s also free to play all weekend, so if you want to take it for a test drive first, now’s your chance! The Daily Deal is 50% off Beat Hazard, marking that down to $4.99 as well.

And now, time for t-shirts!

walkingdead-season2-header

Telltale Games has announced that even more people now have a chance to experience their episodic games based on The Walking Dead.

The first two episodes of The Walking Dead: Season 2, “Episode 1: All That Remains” and “Episode 2: A House Divided,” will be released for the Vita next week. Beginning April 22, players can download both episodes for $4.99 each. As with all other platforms, a $19.99 Season Pass, which represents a 20% discount and includes future access to all five episodes, will also be available next week.

And for those of us who haven’t tried The Walking Dead: Season 1 yet, Telltale also revealed that the complete season (and the “400 Days” expansion) is now available for Android devices. Season 1 was made available for all Android devices through the Google Play store as well as through specialized stores such as TegraZone (Nvidia Shield) and the Amazon Appstore (Amazon Fire TV and Amazon Kindle HDX). The season’s first episode, “A New Day,” is currently available for free on all Android platforms.

Telltale is currently hard at work on the third episode of Season 2, “In Harm’s Way.” Expect to hear more about the continuing story of Clementine soon.

Hyper Light Drifter Hands-On Preview: Like Playing a Dream

hyperlightdrifter-header

Hyper Light Drifter exploded on the Kickstarter scene back in September of last year, eventually destroying its goal of $27,000. By the time the campaign ended on October 12, it had amassed an impressive $645,158 from backers. The game looked incredible, and I kicked it the moment I saw it. I was wary, as I have been about games on Kickstarter for some time – it’s more common to be excited about a game and have it arrive, months (sometimes over a year) later, and be a disappointing mess. But after playing Hyper Light Drifter at PAX East, I can say with confidence that this is one game that’s going to live up to how amazing it looks. (more…)

Minecraft: PlayStation 3 Edition will be available in stores on May 16

minecraft-header

Mojang’s Owen Hill has announced (via the PlayStation Blog) that a disc-based version of Minecraft: PlayStation 3 Edition will be available in stores on May 16. The retail release will join a downloadable version of the game that was added to the PlayStation Store on December 17. Priced at $19.99, the retail version of Minecraft: PlayStation 3 Edition will be current up through Update 14, which added “Emeralds, Ender Chests, potatoes, and more” to the game.

Mojang also wants to remind us that 4J Studios is hard at work on Minecraft: PlayStation 4 Edition and Minecraft: Vita Edition. There’s still no release date for either version, but development continues on both and is currently in the “serious business” stage, whatever that means.

Naughty Dog details Grounded Bundle, the final DLC for The Last of Us

thelastofus-header

Naughty Dog is readying the third (and final) DLC release for The Last of Us, and now they’re finally ready to talk about it. The Grounded Bundle will be available as a free download for Season Pass holders and as five separate DLC packs for everyone. All Grounded Bundle content will also be included in The Last of Us Remastered for the PS4.

The centerpiece of the Grounded Bundle is Grounded Mode ($4.99), a brutal new challenge for the single-player campaign that ups the difficulty to new heights. According to Naughty Dog, the AI in Grounded Mode is “relentless, smart, and brutal” making survival “near impossible.” To showcase their toughness, players will receive a new Trophy upon the completion of Grounded Mode.

The bundle will also include the Reclaimed Territories Map Pack ($9.99), which will add four new maps to the game’s multiplayer mode. “Wharf,” “Capitol,” “Coal Mine,” and “Water Tower” will reintroduce players to locations that are “familiar yet unfamiliar” to those who have completed the single-player campaign.

The Grounded Bundle will include five new weapons. Four will be available as part of the Survivalist Weapon Bundle ($5.99) and a single gun, the Full-Auto Rifle, will be available as a free download for all The Last of Us players. If you spring for the Survivalist Weapon Bundle, you’ll receive the Specter, Double Barrel, Enforcer, and Launcher.

Finally, a pair of Skills packs ($3.99 each) will be included in the Grounded Bundle. The Situational Survival Skills Bundle will enhance your maneuverability while the Professional Survival Skills Bundle will make you a more deadly combatant.

Naughty Dog has announced a release date for the Grounded Bundle yet, but they did announce that the Last of Us Season Pass will no longer be available after May 13, so a May/June release (ahead of the Remastered version’s “Summer” launch) is likely.

More details about all the maps, weapons, and Skills can be found after the break. (more…)
