Worms: Battlegrounds coming to PS4, Xbox One this year

wormsbattlegrounds-header

Team17 has announced Worms: Battlegrounds, their first title to be released for the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One. The developer’s franchise has appeared on 25 other platforms since it first debuted in 1995, and now it’s about to join next-gen consoles.

Team17 will be one of the first studios to self-publish through the ID@Xbox program with Worms: Battlegrounds. The game is due sometime in 2014 for both PS4 and Xbox One; however, if this is the Worms game Phil Spencer mentioned on Twitter (and it likely is), it’s due out on Xbox One in March.

Ubisoft’s Child of Light will be released on April 30

Ubisoft’s utterly gorgeous Child of Light has a new trailer, and it’s lovely. This fairytale-like game takes players through Lemuria, which looks like a beautiful painting. This coming-of-age story lets you play as Aurora, who is fighting to return to the home she was stolen from. The game looks like Ico as a traditional JRPG, with added skills and crafting abilities. In short: it’s just the kind of game I want to play.

Child of Light will be out on April 30 for Xbox 360 and Xbox One (XBLA), PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 (PSN), the Wii U (Nintendo eShop), and the PC (Steam).

Pillars of Eternity will be released in the second half of 2014

projecteternity

Pillars of Eternity, the well-funded Kickstarter project by Obsidian Entertainment, has had a few hiccups along the way. Their Kickstarter campaign originally predicted the game would launch in April 2014, but their most recent development update says otherwise:

“However, before we get to the art, we wanted to officially update everyone that we are looking good to release Eternity by Winter 2014. So, look forward to getting your hands on Pillars of Eternity later this year,” wrote Rose Gomez, the newest producer on the game.

Pillars of Eternity – originally just Project Eternity – hasn’t had a Spring 2014 date for some time. Eurogamer spoke to project lead Josh Sawyer last May, and even then, he hinted at a Winter 2014 release.

But no, according to project lead Josh Sawyer, who spoke to me recently, “It’s not going to be in spring.” What about summer? Probably not.

Is it realistic, then, for people not to expect Pillars of Eternity in the first half of 2014? “Yeah,” he answered. “It’s going to come later.”

And then he explained: “We foresaw needing a bit more time when the Kickstarter ended. It’s understandable that people don’t know this but when you start a Kickstarter, once it goes live, you can’t change that [estimated release] date. You’re not allowed to change to that date.

In 2014, we’re no strangers to delayed Kickstarters, though I’m sure there are more than a few disappointed people out there. Keep yourself occupied with your backlog until Winter 2014 comes around when you can get your hands on Pillars of Eternity.

Disney Infinity 2 in the works after Infinity 1 sells a ton

disneyinfinity-header

Disney Interactive had a 38% revenue growth (to $403 million) and a 600% quarterly operating income growth (to $55 million from $9 million), according to their quarterly earnings call, which took place last week. Chairman and CEO Bob Iger attributed the success primarily to Disney Infinity. Hopefully this means that last week’s rumor about layoffs was just that: a rumor.

But wait – there’s more great news. Iger confirmed that there would be additional entries in the Disney Infinity series, saying, “On the interactive front, there will be new iterations of [Disney] Infinity.” The executive also said that Disney Interactive would explore more mobile possibilities – could Infinity be coming to mobile platforms as well?

The company plans to focus more on licensing their iconic characters (for example, their deal with EA for two Star Wars games) instead of publishing when it comes to console – with the exception of Infinity. Iger also said they are “tracking what we are seeing in the industry” and “moving off of some of the more traditional platforms into mobile-to-mobile space, mostly for social games and for other casual games.”

With how much I see little kids stealing their parents’ phones to play Minecraft and other games, putting more Disney games on mobile would be sheer genius.

2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil scores on PS3, Xbox 360 in April

2014FIFAWorldCupBrazilEA has announced that 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil will be coming out for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on April 15 to celebrate the event. The game will feature new innovations and improvements in gameplay while capturing “the color and vibrancy of Brazil.” Players will be able to use Explosive Movement to accelerate, decelerate, and change direction, and will also feel like pros with Response Dribbling and Pinpoint Passing.

2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil will have 203 national teams, 7,469 players (WOW that is a lot), 19 managers (all officially licensed) and 21 stadiums to choose from. There is also a tournament mode called Road to the FIFA World Cup in which gamers can choose from the aforementioned 203 teams “and play with one to 32 players locally through the qualifying rounds, and on to the group stages of the FIFA World Cup.”

This sounds like a dream come true for FIFA fans. 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil will be out on April 15 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends will launch on March 25

dynastywarriors8extremelegendsTecmo Koei has announced that the latest in their long-running series, Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends Complete Edition, will be releasing on March 25 for PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation Vita. Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends will also release that day for the PlayStation 3.

What’s the difference, you ask? Well, Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends is a standalone expansion for Dynasty Warriors 8, which came out on PS3 back in July of last year. Not only will it have new episodes, it will also add five new characters, bringing the total number of warriors to 82. It “will also feature multiple hypothetical scenarios that alter the plotlines of various episodes throughout the ‘Romance of the Three Kingdoms’ story, an expanded Ambition Mode and the popular Challenge Mode.” There have also been enhancements to the Free Mode.

The Complete Edition, on the other hand, is all of the content of the original Dynasty Warriors 8, coupled with Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends. This is fantastic news for players who want to change over from PS3 to PS4 or Vita, or who haven’t had a chance to pick the game up yet and want choices. You can also transfer your save data across all three platforms, making it easy to play your game anywhere.

Both Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends Complete Edition and Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends will be out on March 25 for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita.

First Evolve trailer, “Happy Hunting,” hints at PAX East debut

2K Games and Turtle Rock Studios have released the first trailer for Evolve, the latest cooperative shooter from the creators of Left 4 Dead.

The trailer, officially known as “Happy Hunting,” uses pre-rendered video to show us the game’s four character classes including a heavy weapons guy, a shield/healer specialist, a defensive character (check out the harpoon gun), and a jetpack-besuited butterfly woman. The cinematic battle against a raging alien is also sountracked to an awesome cover of Danzig’s “Mother” by Lissie.

I’m not sure what to make of Evolve, but this first trailer definitely ticked a few of my pop culture boxes including a pinch of Predator, a dash of Muldoon from Jurassic Park, and a bit of Duck Dynasty. But we’ll get a closer look at Evolve in April as Turtle Rock and 2K plan to bring the game to PAX East in some form.

Evolve is in development for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One and will be released this Fall.
