WZ Year in Review: The Most Popular Articles of 2013

wzyearinreview

With 2013 officially in the books, I think it’s safe to say that it was a year that will go down in infamy among gamers. The Xbox One launched and gamers were still debating whether Microsoft’s scrapped game licensing policy was a good idea. The PS4 also launched and while it didn’t have a so-called “killer app,” it received a much warmer response. The Wii U continued to chug along the track, but most third party publishers (except for Ubisoft and the indies) seemed to get off.

So jump into our DeLorean and take a trip back through 2013 as we look at the 21 most popular articles from the last year. (more…)

Wii U: The Little Engine That Could (and Should)

wiiu-littleengine-header

Ever since the launch of the PS4 and Xbox One, game journalists have pushed out editorial after editorial asking, “What can be done about the Wii U?” Brenna Hillier of VG247 says “Nintendo needs to reach beyond its catalogue to save [the] Wii U.” VideoGamer asked, “Is this the end for the Wii U?” And Gamenesia ran with a fanboy-baiting title pointing to the fact that the Wii U was outsold by the Vita in Japan, despite the release of a new Mario game. Yet looking at the sales figures in the same article, we can see that the margin the Vita outsold it by was a massive 42 units. Not only that, but the article fails to mention that the 3DS XL sold more than the Vita, the Wii U, and the original 3DS combined. The most ridiculous figure in that list is that the Xbox 360 sold 342 units in one week. The original Wii beat that with 457 sales.

But I digress. Hillier’s article is filled with vast generalisations quoting “the Twitterati.” Worse, she stuffs words in Nintendo’s mouth by using inverted commas as if the company has somehow uttered them, or, at the very least, thought them (“We’re Nintendo, and we do what Nintendo does.”).

Reading this article made me angry for a number of reasons. One, she is absolutely right – yet she has written this piece with a pessimistic crudeness – “Nintendo knows it bollocksed the Wii U marketing” – that also reeks of a self-aggrandising attitude toward the product itself. “It’s no longer fashionable to believe in the Wii U,” smirks the subheader.

And that made me even angrier, because this is where she is dead wrong. Why? Because it’s never been fashionable to believe in the Wii U. Ever since it was released, it has been a target for fanboy journalistic hooligans who would take shots at the console like Melissa Bachman would a sleeping lion. (more…)

Interview: Deep in the [Stuff] With Bullet Bros’ Jason Stokes

bulletbros-header

From the bold opening line of the trailer that immediately articulates the level of excrement the brothers-in-arms constantly reside in, Bullet Bros wears its guts on its sleeve. The game features two mercenaries who can link together for some outlandish and original manoeuvres, as well as hook cars, choppers, and other vehicles together for maximum devastation. Unfortunately, the project did not find much love on Kickstarter, collecting pledges for only a third of its $80,000 target. Warp Zoned caught up with creator Jason Stokes in the bloody aftermath of his criminally-overlooked campaign. (more…)

League of Legends: The First 21 Days of Season 4’s Preseason

leagueoflegends-season4preseason

It’s been three weeks since Riot Games released Patch 3.14 for League of Legends. The patch brought with it all of the changes players have been waiting for since the end of Season 3’s Grand Finals. Included were changes to vision, the jungle, supports, and of course, all of the champion and item balance tweaks that come with any patch. For a quick review of what Riot’s changes were, check out my previous article “What to Expect From Season 4.” As we’d all hoped, Season 4 seems to have made significant changes to the League of Legends world, while still keeping the game true to its core. The meta has seen a bit of a shift, and will likely continue to change as the new season grows into its own. Most notable at the moment, however, is the influx of supports and support players, as well as the champions who have become extremely powerful because of various changes, such as Evelynn and Shyvana. Regular Show: Mordecai & Rigby in 8-Bit Land Review: Hmmm, Hmmm

regularshow3ds-header

I am a huge fan of Regular Show. I remember seeing a promo for the cartoon and thinking, “Well, this sure looks strange.” When I finally got a chance to see it, I was instantly hooked. The episode, entitled “High Score,” featured the show’s main characters, Mordecai the blue jay and Rigby the raccoon, attempting to earn respect by getting high scores in an arcade game. As both a gamer and a child of the 80s, this episode really drew me in. It featured old-school arcade games, a New Kids on the Block song, and a perfect parody of 80s arcade icon Billy Mitchell. It even had the universal sign of “I got next” by putting a quarter on the arcade cabinet monitor.

As I got more involved with the show, I noticed more and more retro video game references popping up. Even the Sega Master System makes an appearance in several episodes. It quickly became obvious to me that series creator JG Quintel is a huge fan of retro video games and the generation from which they came, and his love of 80s culture is proudly displayed in every episode. Having understood this, I could only imagine how amazing a Regular Show video game would be. My excitement grew when I heard that not only was a game being made, but it was also being programmed by WayForward, one of my favorite developers. I thought that there was no way that this game would be anything short of perfect. Now, having completed Regular Show: Mordecai & Rigby in 8-Bit Land, I found myself feeling that, while the game is fun, it could have been so much more. So much more. (more…)

Batman: Arkham Origins iOS Review: Swiping Your Time With Another Free-To-Play Fighter

batmanarkhamorigins-header

Even though NetherRealm Studios was only formed a few years ago, they have a long history in the video game industry. Originally known as Midway Chicago, they developed the original Mortal Kombat and its many sequels before their parent company went bankrupt in 2009. In the ensuing legal dealings, the development team was scooped up by WB Games, renamed themselves NetherRealm, and pushed out a fantastic reboot of the Mortal Kombat series.

But did you know that a small team resides within NetherRealm to pump out free-to-play mobile versions of some of WB’s biggest games? They did it last year with Batman: Arkham City. They did it earlier this year with Injustice: Gods Among Us. And now they’ve done it again with the recently released Batman: Arkham Origins. (more…)
