Kickstart This! The Sun-Kissed Edition

It’s the start of June, which means it’s almost the start of summer! Having already caught some rays, me and my peely-waly Scottish skin are now hiding indoors with some mild sunstroke. What better way to spend an evening than trolling through Kickstarter for a worthy project to donate to while peeling burnt skin from my searing red arms?
This month, why not save the universe one shot at a time in Space Monsters Love Bullets, race giant Russian trucks in Spintires, or ride the light fantastic in the magical RPG Reobirth: Magic’s Awakening? There is also the RPG/JRPG/MMO mash-up SideQuest, the chance to help The Gaming Gang cover a dozen sci-fi and gaming conventions in the latter half of 2013, and last but by no means least, Deus Ex Machina 2, a “re-imagining” of the classic game, featuring the voice of Saruman the White himself, Sir Christopher Lee!
Squeeze that sun cream, baby! (more…)
Riding Penny Arcade 4’s Demon Train With Zeboyd Games: An Interview

Zeboyd Games resurrected the Rain-Slick series last year with Penny Arcade’s On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 3, and the team, Designer/Programmer/Writer Robert Boyd and Artist Bill Stiernberg, couldn’t be happier about the response they received. With the release of Penny Arcade’s On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 4 just a few days away, we sit down with the developers to chat about where they’ve come from, where they’re going, and what it’s like to punch a demon train in the face. Anomaly 2 Review: Double the Fun… and Complexity

The original Anomaly: Warzone Earth turned the tower defense genre upside-down – literally, because you played as the creeps fighting against the towers. It was a fun, challenging and popular game, with fans demanding a sequel. Well, Polish developer 11 Bit Studios has happily complied with the aptly named Anomaly 2, highlighted by its killer feature: creeps versus towers multiplayer. (more…)

The Galloping Ghost Arcade: A Trip Back in Time

Summer, 1985. To this day, one particular trip to Pizza Hut remains in my memory. And it wasn’t because of the pizza. No, the only two things I distinctly remember are Dire Straits’ “Money for Nothing” playing on the jukebox, and my dad giving me a quarter and pointing me to a table with a glass top. I couldn’t see well enough from that far away, but it sure looked like something was glowing from under the top of this table. The soothing aura drew me ever closer, and when I reached it, I saw those two words that would forever capture my love for video games.

Call of Juarez: Gunslinger Review: Blazing Saddle (Sores)

Strap on your trusty six-shooters because we’re heading back to the Old West in Call of Juarez: Gunslinger. You’ll hunt down the most notorious outlaws in history, while mowing down hundreds of henchmen in bloody gunfights in famous locales. Sounds like a blast, right? Well, it could be if it weren’t for some clunky and frustrating game mechanics.
E3 2013: The Roadmap To Victory for Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony

Even with the rise of PAX Prime, PAX East, the San Diego Comic-Con, and Gamescom, the annual E3 Expo is still the game industry’s premiere showcase for “what’s next.” And every year, half the fun of the festivities is picking apart the press conferences from Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony and declaring a winner.
I admit, picking press conference winners is more than a little silly. But the three companies are locked in a vicious three-way battle for your video game dollar. Even as the total market has expanded, the opportunities for any individual company have shrunk. So anytime one can wrest control of the headlines away from the other two is a victory. But what can each consolemaker do to ensure a win? Read on and follow our E3 Roadmaps for Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony to find out. (more…)
