Theatrhythm Final Fantasy announced for 3DS, Cloud & Lightning confirmed in rhythm RPG

Square Enix announced Theatrhythm Final Fantasy in the latest Jump magazine, a Theater Rhythm Action game for the Nintendo 3DS. Andriasang reports the game will look a lot like your traditional RPG – with towns, dungeons, and a separate battle screen, but the gameplay takes the form of a rhythm game, tapping your stylus as you’re prompted to do so.

The premise appears to be Kingdom Hearts and Dissidia-esque, as characters from various Final Fantasy universes are pulled together to restore light to a crystal. Lightning, Cloud Strife, and an Onion Knight can all be seen fighting a Behemoth in the picture above, who does not look to be having a good time. The artwork is very similar to Kingdom Hearts Mobile. On the bright side, it appears music from the various Final Fantasy games will play a role in the title.

Other than a release date, only one question remains: why?

Miyamoto and Cuthbert taught each other Japanese and English, respectively

When Dylan Cuthbert first went to Japan to show off a 3D engine for the Game Boy, he was 18 and didn’t speak a word of Japanese. When he came back to work for Nintendo, he worked on his grasp of the language with none other than Miyamoto himself. The father of PixelJunk and the father of Mario engaged in a language exchange while developing Star Fox for the SNES.

This interesting fact came up in the latest “Iwata Asks,” celebrating the Star Fox series and the upcoming Star Fox 64 3D, of which Cuthbert is directing. The interview also touches on the unreleased Star Fox 2, and should be available soon with the other English translations in the 3DS developers section.

This week’s Nintendo Download includes Final Fantasy III, Kirby’s Dream Land

Are you ready to play one of the greatest RPGs of all-time in this week’s Nintendo Download?

The Wii’s Virtual Console plays host to Final Fantasy III (in actuality, the sixth game in the series) this week. The Super NES classic will be joined by the WiiWare release Big Town Shoot Out, a light gun western.

The 3DS’ eShop will receive a single game this week, Kirby’s Dream Land. Believe it or not, this Game Boy title was gaming’s introduction to the pink puffball.

DSi owners will receive a quartet of new games this week (which are also available on the 3DS eShop) including Moto eXtreme, a motorcycle racing game; Hearts Spades Euchre, a card game collection; Boardwalk Ball Toss, a bottle smashing game that’s not rigged; and The Lost Town: The Dust, an overhead zombie shooter.

More information on all of these titles can be found in Nintendo’s weekly newsletter.

Resident Evil Mercenaries 3D: GameStop NOT accepting trade-ins, NOT rentable at Gamefly

With Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D now available in stores, some disturbing facts about the game cartridge are coming to light. It seems that Capcom has rigged the game with a feature they call “Forever Saves.” A “Forever Save” cannot be erased or reset and will remain with the game permanently. It’s also causing some problems for game retailer GameStop and rental-by-mail company Gamefly.

Gamefly has confirmed they will not be offering Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D for rent. Meanwhile, GameStop managers have begun to inform gamers that they will not accept the game as a trade-in. However, they will continue to sell new copies of the title (insert “Oh, the irony!” comment here).

A Capcom representative told Destructoid that the “Forever Saves” were not implemented to deter used sales, but he didn’t really have an explanation for why the feature was included:

In Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, all mission progress is saved directly to the Nintendo 3DS cartridge, where it cannot be reset. The nature of the game invites high levels of replayability in order to improve mission scores. In addition, this feature does not remove any content available for users. Secondhand game sales were not a factor in this development decision, so we hope that all our consumers will be able to enjoy the entirety of the survival-action experiences that the game does offer.

Something tells me the “Forever Save” is an experiment that won’t be repeated.

Nintendo’s 3DS: Looking Into the Next Dimension

Here at Warp Zoned, we believe in staying up-to-date with the current consoles and handhelds. We believe in this so much that roughly 25% of us swallowed our pride and bought the Nintendo 3DS. Okay, really it was just Senior Editor Nicole Kline and Podcast Producer Ryan Littlefield. But the 3DS has been available to the public for three months, and we thought we would take this opportunity to weigh in on what we like, what we don’t like, and where we think Nintendo might take the handheld in its inevitable revision. Xbox COO doesn’t like the chances of PS Vita, 3DS

The PlayStation Vita has garnered a lot of enthusiasm from gamers with its promising software lineup, as has the 3DS with its innovative visuals and recently released The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3DS. But where many gamers see hope, Microsoft corporate executives see doom.

Xbox COO Dennis Durkin told Industry Gamers that while he respects Nintendo and Sony, he wouldn’t want to trade places with them, especially in the handheld space. “I’m not sure I would want to be launching a dedicated portable device right now into that market,” said Durkin. “If you look at the 3DS, certainly versus people’s expectation’s, it’s not been as successful as people would have thought. So that’s a very crowded market and a very, very red ocean right now with a lot of change happening. So I’m not sure it’s [a good idea].”

While I’m sure that mentality is what makes him very good at what he does, it makes me glad Microsoft isn’t involved in the dedicated gaming handheld space, given their attitude. When it comes to handheld gaming, I usually like to order a healthy heaping of gameplay with a side of innovation… hold the corporate bullsh*t.

Smash Bros. for 3DS/Wii U is “several years” away

One of the highlights of Nintendo’s E3 Press Conference was the announcement of a new Super Smash Bros. game for the 3DS and Wii U. It was also revealed that the games will be developed by Kid Icarus: Uprising mastermind Masahiro Sakurai. But Sakurai recently informed Famitsu (and translated by 1UP) that gamers shouldn’t expect them anytime soon.

“Right now, we’re devoting all our manpower to working on Kid Icarus. We’ve got no plans whatsoever — we’ve got two new games out in the open when there’s no extra time to work with them at all. It makes me cringe, and I’m not sure it’s the smartest thing to make gamers wait for several years, but the early announcement was made chiefly in order to attract new team members.”

So the next Smash Bros. is “several years” away? Ouch. Let’s hope Sakurai and his team at Project Sora can find the right people to fit in with the group as they work on the fourth Smash Bros. game.
