Miyamoto: “Super Mario 3DS is a combination of Galaxy, Mario 64”

The 3DS’ lineup is slowly starting to fill out. Ocarina of Time 3D has been given a release date. Star Fox 64 3D has a date in Japan, with an American one sure to follow. And now, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto has revealed a little about the (currently untitled) Super Mario Bros. 3DS.

The famed developer told Edge: “It’s a combination of Super Mario Galaxy and [Super Mario 64]. It won’t convey the message if I talk to you today, but if you play it at E3 that will give you more understanding of what I’m talking about.”

Learning that the next 3D Mario game will play like the previous 3D Mario games isn’t too surprising. Nor is finding out that the raccoon tail in the game’s logo refers to the return of the Super Leaf from Super Mario Bros. 3: “The tail you mentioned on the logo – it’s what you think it is. You probably know what’s going to happen using that character.”

Miyamoto finished the interview by revealing that Super Mario Bros. 3DS will be brand new (“completely original” he says) and that it’s coming this year.

But I guess we’ll have to wait until E3 to learn more.

Mega Man Legends 3 Prototype Version has a trailer

When Nintendo’s eShop for the 3DS launches next month, you’ll be able to get your hands on Mega Man Legends 3: Prototype Version, a paid demo for the full game, similar to what we’ve seen with Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy: Prologus on PSN in March. The game looks to let you play as Barrett, one of the new characters, flying throughout the city and taking on those Bonnes.

I assume.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D extras announced, include Boss Rush mode

Hey! Listen! Link (and Navi) are happy to share that Nintendo has announced some of the extras for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. In addition to the Master Quest, which is a more challenging playthrough of the game, there’s also Boss Rush. In this mode, you can fight bosses you’ve already defeated, or even take them on in one nonstop battle. That sounds hardcore, which is just what OoT fans want right now.

CVG is also speculating that there will be a “Super Guide” as well. They quoted Nintendo as saying, “Players not so familiar to the Legend of Zelda series can also get a helping hand through bite sized videos available in-game, which will provide hints on how to solve puzzles encountered during your journey.”

This all sounds better and better. The remake, which is being developed by Grezza – helmed by Secret of Mana creator, Kouichi Ishii – will be out June 19.

Nintendo sells almost 400,000 3DS units in first week

Nintendo hit it out of the park again, selling nearly 400,000 3DS units in its first week on sale. But it couldn’t overtake its little brother as, according to Nintendo, the NPD group announced that the DS family sold over 460,000 units in the month of March, “propelled by sales of more than 1.3 million Pokémon White Version games and more than 1.1 million Pokémon Black Version games.” I guess that smear campaign isn’t working.

But 3DS owners have more to look forward to than just 3DS without the glasses. There’s a free system update coming soon that, besides allowing DSi and DSi XL owners to transfer their DSiWare games, will also give access to the Nintendo eShop. There’s The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, which was finally given a June 19 release date. And, finally, Netflix is coming to the 3DS, reportedly later this summer, which is awesome news for those of us with both an unlimited streaming membership as well as a 3DS.

Nintendo of America’s senior director of Corporate Communications, Charlie Scibetta, said that “Nintendo provides people with the best video game experiences, from 3D visuals without special glasses to a touch-screen interface to motion controls.” Nintendo reps are really heavy on the “3D without glasses” angle. Hey Charlie, I’ve got your new slogan: “No glasses? No problem.” Bam.

Pokemon Black/White dominate sales chart

The NPD Group has revealed the list of bestselling games for March and the latest Pokemon game, Pokemon Black/White, has caught the top of the chart.

Pokemon White Version came out on top with Pokemon Black Version just behind it in the number two slot. According to Nintendo, both games combined to sell nearly 2.5 million copies (over 1.3 million for White and another 1.1 million for Black).

New releases were well represented among last months bestsellers with Homefront (#3) and Dragon Age II (#4) both taking up residence in the top five. The bottom half of the top ten was also almost completely made up of new releases including Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars (#6), Crysis 2 (#7), MLB 11: The Show (#9) and Fight Night Champion (#10).

Hit the jump for a complete look at the NPD Group’s top ten for March. (more…)

Logos for Sonic Generations and next Mario & Sonic may have leaked

It’s nothing confirmed, but the Sonic Stadium forums have stumbled upon images for the anticipated multi-generational Sonic Generations as well as Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games. You can see the pic of the latter after the break.

I know it probably wouldn’t be the final box art, but I kind of like that image of the two Sonics with just a white background. It would be pleasantly simplistic and non-pretentious, and possibly get me more excited for the game (if that’s at all a legitimate reason). Sonic Generations will be coming out this year for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, while little information at all (technically, it hasn’t even been announced yet) is known about the next Olympic mash up of the Mushroom Kingdom and… the Zones. Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D leads Nintendo’s Summer schedule on June 19

The game everyone bought their 3DS for is just around the corner as Nintendo has announced a release date for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. The game is scheduled for release on June 19 and will include “new challenges not included in the original game,” newly implemented motion controls and the Ocarina of Time Master Quest. Awesome.

Also awesome is the newly released Spring/Summer game lineup for the 3DS, DS and Wii. You can check out the list of all the Nintendo-published and third party titles after the break. (more…)

A tale of two platforms – Harvest Moon: The Tale of Two Towns coming to DS, 3DS

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Actually, these are just some pretty good times, because Harvest Moon: The Tale of Two Towns, the next chapter in Natsume’s legendary RPG/farm-sim series, will be releasing simultaneously on the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo DS this Summer. The story centers on, yep, two villages who have grown apart since a vehement dispute over who has the best cooking. Players can choose start in the crop-oriented, Eastern flair of Konohana or the animal-loving European-style town of Bluebell. Who wants to take bets on if you marry someone from the other town?

Commenting on the dual platform, Hiro Maekawa, President and CEO of Natsume, stated “We wanted to ensure that all of our loyal Harvest Moon fans would have a chance to play this game,” presumably because of all the returned 3DS units following the horrible diseases it causes (sarcasm). “No matter which version they pick up, they’re sure to love the great new cast of characters, the fun festivals, and the exciting new gameplay mechanics.”

If only the Second Europan War in Valkyria Chronicles started over cooking. I’m sure there’d be a lot less ethnic cleansing.
