New Retail Releases: Xbox One X, Sonic Forces, Need For Speed Payback, More
Microsoft will launch their massively-powerful Xbox One X console this week, and Sony will counter with a brand new hardware bundle of their own with the PlayStation VR + Gran Turismo Sport Bundle.
But this week truly belongs to Nintendo, as Doom, Farming Simulator: Nintendo Switch Edition, and a new boxed edition of Snipperclips Plus: Cut It Out Together! will all make their retail debut this week. The consolemaker will shine a spotlight on the 3DS with the release of Mario Party: The Top 100 and a boxed edition of Minecraft: New 3DS Edition.
Elsewhere on store shelves this week, Sega will release Sonic Forces for the PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One, while Electronic Arts will also put the pedal to the metal in Need For Speed Payback on the PS4 and Xbox One.
Finally, Microsoft will usher their new console with Super Lucky’s Tale, a throwback platformer for players of all ages.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds will launch on the Xbox One on December 12… Stranger Things Skin Pack now available in Minecraft
A hundred players parachute onto the island, but the game is almost ready to parachute onto the Xbox One. That’s right, PUBG Corp has announced a release date for the Xbox One launch of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds at Paris Games Week.
Also today, Mojang is adding the potent fanbase of Stranger Things to Minecraft with a new Skin Pack.

Super Mario Odyssey, Moon Hunters, Monopoly, more coming to Nintendo eShop this week
I’ve started to take it for granted that a big batch of new downloadable games will be released for the Switch every week through the Nintendo eShop. This week is no different, but it also comes with the added bonus of Mario’s latest adventure, Super Mario Odyssey, which will be available to download on Friday.
If you’re skipping the plumber’s latest rescue attempt, Switch owners will also be able to download retro-inspired RPG Moon Hunters and Ubisoft’s Monopoly adaptation (on Tuesday).

New Retail Releases: WWE 2K18, Gran Turismo Sport, Fire Emblem Warriors, More
It’s impossible to say that a single genre is representative of “video games” in 2017, and this grab bag approach is n full display in this week’s new retail releases report.
2K Games will launch their latest wrestling sim, WWE 2K18, for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Sony will follow that up with their simulation, Gran Turismo Sport, an online-focused racer for the PS4.
However, Nintendo is taking the opposite tack and launching Fire Emblem Warriors, a swords-and-sorcery mashup of the franchise’s entire history for the Switch and New 3DS. The crazy kids from South Park will also march into stores this week in South Park: The Fractured But Whole for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One. And speaking of RPGs, Atlus will release Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond The Myth for the 3DS.

The Video Game Canon: Mega Man 2
Dig deeper into the Video Game Canon with a look at the the blockbuster success born out of the simple ambitions of Mega Man 2. Here’s a teaser…
The first Mega Man game is a bit of an odd duck, which has become even more pronounced as the years go by. The graphics are simplistic, the sound is tinny, there’s only six Robot Masters instead of the traditional eight, and there’s even a score counter (a feature that was jettisoned from the dozens of sequels that followed). There’s just a smoothness to subsequent games in the franchise that Capcom had yet to master with the first entry.
But like most Mega Man fans, I only learned all this after the fact. At the time, whatever memories I have of the first game were formed by guide writers who described it as an unfairly difficult game, old episodes of Captain N, and the fact that none of the local rental outlets owned a copy (unsurprisingly, Lee Trevino’s Fighting Golf was always available).
I finally got the chance to see what all the fuss was about with Mega Man 2, which was also the first game in the Mega Man franchise to be spearheaded by Capcom’s Keiji Inafune. With an expanded role in the sequel’s development, Inafune became known as the “Father” of Mega Man to plenty of fans, and codified many of the traditions and patterns the series is known for.

Axiom Verge, Stardew Valley, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, more added to Nintendo eShop
The Nintendo Switch continues its roll this week as indie developers have added another massive batch of games to the consolemaker’s eShop.
Leading the way are Axiom Verge, the retro-styled MetroidVania from Thomas Happ, and Stardew Valley, the whimsical farming sim from ConcernedApe. Both games will be joined by Tumblestone, a “multiplayer action puzzler” from the Quantum Astrophysicists Guild.
Over on the 3DS, Nintendo will bring Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions, a remake of the beloved Game Boy Advance RPG, and Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy, the latest puzzle adventure from Level-5, to their handheld beginning tomorrow.
