Daily Scoop: February 5, 2014 – Happy hump day!

Man, this crazy weather is really making this week drag on! But we’ve hit hump day, which means we’re halfway to the weekend. What games are you planning on playing?

There’s not much happening today in terms of deals, but I’ve scrounged up what I can. Steam has SimCity 4 Deluxe Edition for $4.99, and they’ve also announced a discounted subscription plan for DarkFall: Unholy Wars. There’s a great deal happening at GOG.com as well – right now, you can pick up Battle Worlds: Kronos for 50% off ($14.99). Scoop ’em up!

The good news is, I do have a few video game t-shirts for you! (more…)

Daily Scoop: February 4, 2014 – Saving the day

Don’t worry, everyone! I just spent a lot of money on some brand new snow boots, which means it’s not going to snow for another three years. That’s just how my luck works: now that I’m prepared, I’ll never need to be prepared. So get ready for spring! (Take that, Phil!)

Just in case I’m wrong, though, you can still grab some deals for when you’re snowed in. Steam is having a few good sales, including Agarest: Generations of War for $9.99 (or $12.49 for the collector’s edition), Don’t Starve for $5.99, Metal Slug 3 for $5.99, and Octodad: Dadliest Catch for $11.99.

Not satisfied? Head over to the Humble Store for their Mid-Week Mega Sale featuring Paradox Interactive. You can get lots of great stuff, including the Crusader Kings II Collection for $19.99, the Magicka Collection for $8.99, and Knights of Pen and Paper for $2.49. Scoop ’em up!

Looking for some good t-shirts? Look no further than the jump! (more…)

Here’s the Need For Speed movie Super Bowl trailer

The new Need For Speed movie trailer asks, “What drives you?” Well, I’ll tell you what drives me to the movie theater: the promise of seeing Aaron Paul on the big screen. Even though the video game franchise is in trouble, there’s some potential here for a movie franchise. And, even though the Fast and Furious movies may be without Paul Walker from now on (We miss you!), perhaps this is the start of a new racing series.

Need For Speed will open in theaters on March 14.

This is what it takes to create a fake video game for a TV show

fakevideogameontv

What do you do when you’re making a television show, and you need to show off a fake video game? How much work does that take? According to this hyper-detailed article at Tested.com, it takes quite a lot.

In the new HBO series, Looking, Patrick (pictured above) works at a fictional video game company called Most Dangerous Games (MDG). In a scene, in which you actually see only a few seconds of the video game, Patrick plays a fighting game against another character. In order to create that video game, Todd Fjelsted, the show’s production designer, turned to CG expert Craig Vance.

Vance put a lot of work into it, starting “by going through his library of CG assets, hoping that he might be able to modify existing structures instead of having to build them from scratch. The game’s three characters, for instance, were ones Vance had pre-built based on people he’d worked with, which he then altered to fit Naval Destroyer’s specifications. (So not only are the video game’s characters roughly based on the show’s characters, but they’re also roughly based on people Vance actually works with, too). The battleship exteriors were also existing assets that were tweaked.”

Full details can be found at the article. The final product was six minutes of gameplay, which was only shown onscreen for one second. Wild!

Daily Scoop: February 3, 2014 – Here comes the snow

This week is supposed to be a non-stop snow-a-thon, which sounds really fun! I mean, it sounds really fun if we get some snow days. So far that’s not looking like it’s going to happen. All the snow is doing is making my commute three times as long as usual. Seriously, the city should be shut down today! It’s treacherous out there. Oh, and it’s Monday, too, which is a strike against it.

There are not too many deals happening today. The Humble Store has Bridge Constructor for $4.99, The Floor is Jelly for $8.99, and Octodad: Dadliest Catch for $11.99.

There’s one good deal happening at Steam, and that’s on Deus Ex: Human Revolution. You can get the Director’s Cut of the game for just $4.99. That’s a great deal!

There are some amazing t-shirts today. Hit the jump to see all of them! (more…)

Breaking Madden: One man’s amazing destruction of the (digital) Super Bowl

I don’t know anything about sports, which is why I’ve never visited SB Nation… until today, that is. Jon Bois does an amazing job of breaking Madden NFL 25 in his amazing article, The Breaking Madden Super Bowl: The Machine Is Bleeding to Death. While the writing is superb, it’s the GIFs of him humiliating the game that really make it.

Whether you’re a football fan, a player of the Madden series, or… OK, really, if you’re just a fan of video games in general, you will appreciate this gem. Get ready to laugh until it hurts.

Daily Scoop: January 30, 2014 – Headache edition

Some days, you wake up and you just want to party all day. Other days, you wake up with a massive headache and can’t quite shake it, no matter what you do. Sadly, today is one of those days. I’ve been home all day trying to fight it, and it’s finally starting to break. I can even look at a computer screen now, which is an improvement over this morning.

There are some great deals happening right now. If you’re not familiar with Insert Coin Clothing, then their Epic Sale is the best way for you to get acclimated with them. They have some of the best video game-themed clothing and accessories on the entire Internet, and I strongly encourage you to check them out!

Other than that, there isn’t much else going on. Steam’s latest weekend deal is all about Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, which has tons of great sales. The Humble Store has a few great new sales happening – you can get The Floor is Jelly for $8.99, Octodad: Dadliest Catch for $11.99, or rymdkapsel for $7.19.

As always, I’ve got a few good shirts for you: (more…)
