Daily Scoop: January 6, 2014 – Happy New Year!

Hello everyone, and happy new year! It’s been an amazing holiday for me – I spent so much time playing games, it boggles my mind. Anthony and I got loads of games on sale and pretty much haven’t stopped playing games for the last two weeks. The last few days we’ve played more Hammerwatch than my poor hands can take! I can’t recommend that game enough to everyone. Seriously. It is ridiculously good.

But I’m sure you’re here for the deals! There are some going on at Amazon, like the Limited Edition of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag for $99.99 and Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time for $12.99. You can also get an Ouya Console on sale for $89.99.

If you’re looking for some digital games, you might want to check out the Humble Bundle Store, where you can get Continue?9876543210 for $7.99, Retro City Rampage for $4.99, and Trine for $1.99.

There are also lots of good t-shirts for sale today! (more…)

Golden Pixel Awards 2013: What We Loved, What We Hated, and What We’ll Never Forget

wzgoldenpixelawards-header

2013 was an amazing year in gaming. While we got loads of sequels, we also got some beautiful new IPs, and plenty of new hardware to enjoy it all.

Naughty Dog took a break from Uncharted and gave us The Last of Us, BattleBlock Theater reminded us why we love The Behemoth, and Ken Levine and his crew unleashed BioShock: Infinite on the gaming world. And let’s not forget all the amazing ports, including Diablo III (on consoles), Fez (on the PC), and Hotline Miami (on the PS3 and Vita). Yes, this year took our breath away, and cramped our thumbs like the good old days of the NES. We here at Warp Zoned have been gaming our little fingers off the last 12 months, and we’ve been even harder at work the last few weeks trying to decide what we loved and hated about gaming in 2013. After several days of deliberation, here’s what we came up with. And now it’s time for us to get back to gaming… 2014 is ready for us. (more…)

Daily Scoop: December 23, 2013 – Time for you to buy Monaco

I know I tell you to buy a lot of games, but that’s kind of the whole point of this column – it’s a place where I put all of the amazing deals that I find. I don’t expect you to buy all of them; heck, I don’t even buy all of them. But there’s one deal that can’t be missed today, and that’s Monaco on sale for $2.99 at the Humble Store. This is a super fun game if you like playing games online or local co-op. It supports up to four players and, while difficult, can be really fun, too. They’ve got plenty of other sales for the next 24 hours, too – so many good ones that I need to avert my gaze.

There are also loads of digital games on sale at Amazon right now. The BioShock Triple Pack is $14.99, the Borderlands 2 and Borderlands GOTY Pack is $11.99, the Max Payne Complete Pack is $6.99, Spec Ops: The Line is $5.99, and the XCOM: Enemy Unknown and XCOM: Enemy Within Pack is $19.99… among many, many others.

And now for something that isn’t digital… t-shirts! (more…)

Daily Scoop: December 20, 2013 – Friday, Friday, Friday

It’s finally Friday! Not only that, it’s utterly gorgeous here in sunny Philadelphia. Contrary to popular belief, it is not always sunny here. Recently it’s been everything but – with crazy rain, hail, and snow keeping us down, it’s been hard to get our spirits up! But this weekend, it’s supposed to be 70 degrees (what!), so maybe I’ll even open up some windows while I’m playing video games. Maybe.

So, I know I keep talking about it, but Papers, Please is on sale at the Humble Store for just $4.99 right now, meaning you really have no excuse at all not to buy it. On top of that, the ridiculously amazing Broforce is on sale for $9.99! It’s in beta right now, but trust me – you still want to play it.

Oh, and if you’re still looking for Christmas gifts, Grand Theft Auto V is $39.99 right now on Amazon, and it will get to you in time for the holidays.

T-shirt time, woo! (more…)

Only-On-Xbox documentary series will unearth E.T. Atari 2600 cartridges

et-atariOne of gaming’s greatest mysteries, the mass burial of E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial cartridges, will soon be solved – and only on Xbox. A documentary series, set to film in January, will attempt to unearth these fabled games from the New Mexico landfill in which they supposedly reside. The documentary will be exclusive to the Xbox 360 and the Xbox One as part of Microsoft’s original programming initiative, and will air sometime in 2014.

For those of you who are not aware, here’s the skinny:

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial for the Atari 2600 is largely considered as a major contributor to the great video game crash of 1983. The game was an awful mess, and millions of copies went unsold. Then, in the middle of the night, Atari drove several garbage trucks full of the game to the small town of Alamogordo, New Mexico, and buried them in a landfill.

So are they really there? We’ll all (well, those of us with an Xbox console) find out together next year when filmmakers Jonathan and Simon Chinn and director Zak Penn go in search of E.T.’s last home.

Daily Scoop: December 19, 2013 – Fez is eating my brain

I’m not sure if I told you guys this yet, but I’ve recently become addicted to the game Fez. It’s an incredible little brain-buster that makes me feel smarter every single time I figure something out in it. It’s elegant, and wistful, and I wish Phil Fish had not quit video games forever. The bottom line is: you should get it because it’s the best.

Speaking of other games you should get, there’s a new list of games on sale at the Humble Store! Papers, Please is still $6.66, Limbo is $2.49, and Legend of Grimrock is $7.49. There’s also a brand new Humble Weekly Sale, which includes the awesome Ultratron! It’s like the Internet knows I just got a new computer.

There are plenty of last-minute deals happening over at Amazon as well. You can get Angry Birds Star Wars for the Nintendo Wii for $19.99, Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag for $39.99, and Battlefield 4 for $39.99. Of course, if you want to stay digital, they’ve got great digital deals as well, like the BioShock Triple Pack for $14.99.

And now let’s see about some t-shirts! (more…)

Daily Scoop: December 17, 2013 – Ice and Snow Edition

It’s been a seriously snowy couple of weeks, which is good and bad! Good because, let’s face it, snow is really beautiful and can be fun, but bad because I’ve had no time to have fun in it, and it’s been ridiculously freezing. Also, it keeps turning into ice, which is just not cool at all.

But the crazy cold weather hasn’t frozen all the deals! Amazon’s got some pretty good PlayStation deals, including Gran Turismo 5 XL Edition for $10 and The Last of Us (which Amazon just crowned their Game of the Year) for $35.

There are also some new games on sale at the Humble Store. Now’s the time to pick up Papers, Please (for $6.66) and Rogue Legacy ($7.49). So many good games, so little time and hard drive space!

And, of course, we’ve got t-shirts…

Daily Scoop: December 16, 2013 – Digital Deals

It’s Monday again, sadly, but I spent the whole weekend playing tons of amazing video games, so I’m a happy camper! I played and beat Fez, which I’m in love with, and then started it right back up again in New Game+. Now that school’s finally done, I can play all the games I want! Until the next term starts up, that is.

There are lots of great digital deals, including Fallout 3 GOTY Edition for $6.79 and Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete for $7.49.
