Grand Theft Auto IV: Nine Years Later

The highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto IV hit store shelves on April 29, 2008.
I was a sophomore in high school, and I remember it quite well. My mother totally disapproved, so if I wanted to play violent games, I’d have to ask my dad or grandfather to purchase them for me. In the months leading up to Grand Theft Auto IV’s release, I practically drooled over the latest news coverage and store ads (especially the Special Edition with its neat duffel bag, art book, soundtrack CD, and safe deposit box). I never did get the Special Edition, but my dad did purchase Grand Theft Auto IV for me.
My mother had relocated for work, so I had moved in with my father and grandfather in order to finish out the school year. A few months prior, my dad had made the jump from PlayStation 2 to Xbox 360. So on most days, I’d spend the evenings holed up in my grandfather’s basement, with an extra large bag of Peanut M&M’s in my lap, a bottle of Coke at my feet, and a bulky white Xbox 360 controller nestled between my slender teenaged hands. I’d sift through my dad’s video games, randomly popping in anything that appeared interesting, playing until either my dad came home from the NIH Power Plant, or my grandfather yelled down the stairs for me to turn off the TV and go to bed.
But on that Tuesday in April, my dad came home with a surprise… he’d purchased Grand Theft Auto IV! I finished my dinner, grabbed my go-to gaming snacks, and headed for the basement. I’ll never forget those opening scenes of Niko Bellic stepping off of the Platypus, waiting for his cousin Roman to arrive and indoctrinate him into the American way of life. (more…)
Retro-styled Breath of the Wild fangame will remove Zelda characters after takedown notice from Nintendo
As expected, Nintendo has dropped the hammer on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of a NES, a retro-styled reimagining of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The takedown notice was issued to developer Winter Drake by Nintendo’s lawyers over the weekend, and it’s available for public viewing on Twitter.
Even though this is a huge setback for Winter Drake, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of a NES will continue in an altered form. The developer has vowed to remove every reference to Nintendo’s franchise, and replace them with original characters and designs. Winter Drake even posted this encouraging message on the game’s Itch.io this morning: “Nintendo has asked me to take stop hosting the game. The project will live on, just not with Zelda characters.”
And speaking to Kotaku, Winter Drake revealed that the new vision for Breath of the NES will include “32-bit sprites” and “a rich soundtrack”:
As for what Breath of the NES’s spiritual successor will look like, Winter is planning on 32-bit sprites working with musicians to put together a rich soundtrack. Substituting improved gameplay and originality for the 8-bit nostalgia powering the original project won’t be easy though, meaning we probably won’t see a new trailer or playable demo for some time. “Ideally I’d like to make the final game a big cross-platform release on Steam,” Winter said. “I may even start a Kickstarter once I can show off what the new game will have to offer.”
As before, Winter Drake will be providing additional updates on the progress of Breath of the NES’s successor on Twitter.

New Retail Releases: Prey, Guardians of the Galaxy Season Pass Disc, FlatOut 4

We’ve got three new games for the last Retail Release Report in April 2017…
Even though the new Prey has nothing to do with Human Head’s bizarre first person shooter from 2006 or its canceled sequel, Bethesda will release a new entry in the franchise this week for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Players will assume the role of Morgan Yu, a crew member on the Talo I space station. The the aliens show up and humanity becomes the “prey” of the title.
Also also available on store shelves this week is the Season Pass Disc for Telltale’s Guardians of the Galaxy adaptation. Just in time for the theatrical opening of Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2, the PS4 and Xbox One disc will include the game’s first episode, Tangled Up In Blue, and downloadable access to all four upcoming episodes.
Finally this week, developer Kylotonn will bring back the destruction-heavy FlatOut franchise with FlatOut 4: Total Insanity for the PS4 and Xbox One.
That’s all for now, but we’ll be back soon with a look at this week’s new additions to the PlayStation Store, Xbox Games Store, and Nintendo eShop.

Stare into the Eye of Cthalha in the “Ruins of Sarnath” Arena from Quake Champions
Lovecraftian evil invades Quake Champions this week thanks to a new trailer featuring the “Ruins of Sarnath” Arena.
Guarded by the ever-watchful Eye of Cthalha, the “Ruins of Sarnath” will require players to employ multiple strategies against their opponents as they navigate the Arena’s tight corridors, cavernous chambers, and high ledges:
Arena: Ruins of Sarnath
Time weighs heavy on the Ruins of Sarnath and nature has taken hold, dripping verdant greens into the wreckage of this ancient temple. Now, untold ages after they rose from the inky blackness of the Dreamlands, the Ruins of Sarnath are a blood-soaked killing field where Champions from the waking world fight to the death.
The Quake Champions Closed Beta continues this week for players who have received an invitation from Bethesda. If you’re still interested, you can sign up for a chance to receive a Closed Beta code at the game’s official website.

Kickstart This! Safe House

Ever since the release of Playtonic’s Yooka-Laylee, it feels like there has been a bit of a lull over at Kickstarter. Many had hoped that the game, crafted by Rare veterans, would harken back to the heyday of 3D platformers. Unfortunately, a wonky camera and poor level design took the wind from its sails.
Of course, crowdfunding was never the cause of this. Yooka-Laylee was born out of love by game developers, and rather than criticise it for its flaws, it should be celebrated for actually being made and released. Many crowdfunding games fall by the wayside long before they reach a beta test, but then again, many are not even as well-received as Playtonic’s project was.
Whether you consider it a success or a failure, there are other crowdfunding games that need your support. I always think Kickstarter is at its best when it becomes a platform for innovation. It often gets saturated with well-loved genres like JRPGs or retro 2D platformers, but a smaller target can force developers to get creative. Every now and again, someone comes up with a concept that is as novel as it is entertaining, and Safe House is one of those rare gems.
Let’s kick down this door and see what’s behind it! (more…)
