John Romero is developing a new first person shooter; Full reveal planned for April 25
John Romero, the co-creator of Doom and Quake, has decided to return to the first person shooter arena. The famed developer walked away from first person shooters in 2000, after the over-ambitious Daikatna was met with a poor reception by the gaming public.
Romero enlisted Adrian Carmack, another original member of id Software, to help him spread the news with an excellent parody of the final scene from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. With his graying hair and hoodie, Romero certainly looks the part of a former first-person Jedi. And if nothing else, the video proves he’s learned quite a bit about how to craft an effective advertisement in the last two decades.
According to the video, Romero’s new shooter is in development at Night Work Games, and the public will get their first look at what he’s been up to on Monday, April 25. Located in Galway, Ireland, Night Work is said to be “the dark and violent subsidiary of Romero Games.”
Romero has been hinting at his return to the genre that made him famous for some time now. Back in January, the developer created a new map for Doom, his first in 21 years. Referred to as “a warm-up” by Romero at the time, we’ll all get to see what he’s been working towards in just a few days.
Call of Duty: Black Ops III’s Eclipse DLC Pack is now available for the PS4
Just a reminder, the Eclipse DLC Pack for Call of Duty: Black Ops III is now available to download on the PS4 as part of the Season Pass or as a standalone purchase ($14.99). Activision and Treyarch also released a new trailer to get players pumped for the multiplayer expansion. You can find it embedded above, and you can find a quick refresher of all its contents right here:
- Spire: Spire takes Multiplayer combat to a futuristic sub-orbital airport terminal set high in the clouds. Multiple levels and open areas promote intense, mid-range combat around a clean, high-tech civilian environment. Watch your step, because one wrong move could send you plummeting back through the stratosphere.
- Rift: Head to the core of a harsh futuristic military complex, set high above an active caldera. Rift funnels and forces tight, intense engagements, where the only way through is forward. Utilize the unique core movement opportunities to outsmart and outplay enemies as you traverse the suspended rail system.
- Knockout: Housed in a traditional Shaolin Temple with a retro twist, Knockout sets the stage for a bloody Kung Fu tournament. This mid-sized map showcases a sharp contrast between the mid-range engagements of the traditional exterior architecture and the tight close-quarters of an eclectic 1970’s styled interior.
- Verge: In this re-imagination of the classic Call of Duty: World At War map, “Banzai,” Verge drops Multiplayer combat into the center of a distant post-apocalyptic future, where two warring factions are entrenched in constant battle. Take control of the key bridge, fortresses, tunnel systems and waterfalls as you engage in high-speed action through this medium-sized map.
Eclipse also sets the stage for “Zetsubou No Shima,” the highly-anticipated, all-new entry in the Call of Duty: Black Ops III Zombies storyline that spans the four DLC Map Packs for Black Ops III this year. The Origins characters continue on their mission to stop the zombie apocalypse not only in this universe but in all universes. Our heroes find themselves stranded on a remote Pacific island which is home to the Division 9 facility: a secret biological research lab whose experiments with Element 115 and its effects on human, animal, and plant biology has created horrors beyond belief. “Zetsubou No Shima” features a foliage rich island map including new terrifying zombie enemies, a variety of innovative transport mechanics, more devastating traps and classic Zombies side quests.
And don’t worry, PC and Xbox One owners will be able to download the Eclipse DLC Pack sometime in May.

Pyre announced by Supergiant Games… and it’ll be playable at PAX East 2016
Supergiant Games will return to PAX East this weekend with their third game, Pyre. Set to be released in 2017 for the PC and PS4, Pyre is a party-based RPG that combines “expressive decision-making on the world map with fast, action-packed confrontations against rival groups.”
Supergiant is attempting to build another unique and interesting world for Pyre, and a small glimpse at that world can be seen in the trailer embedded above. The developer also a bit more ato say bout the mystery at the heart of the story on their official website:
The Story So Far: At the beginning of the game, your luck has almost run out when several masked wanderers find you and revive you from the brink. With your help, they seek to learn the truth about the Rites, a secretive competition through which the worthiest exiles can return home, absolved of their transgressions. As you journey across the Downside in the wanderers’ custom blackwagon, you’ll meet a variety of characters of all shapes and sizes, and learn what’s in store for each of them should they prevail in the Rites. Your actions will determine who returns to glory, and who remains in exile to the end of their days.
As with Bastion and Transistor, Pyre will feature original music written by Darren Korb, with vocals performed by Korb and Ashley Barrett. A video for “In the Flood,” the song featured in the trailer, can be found after the break. (more…)

Get your revenge in Mafia III on October 7
2K Games is heading down to N’awlins (excuse me, New Bordeaux) this October to treat PC, PS4, and Xbox One owners to the blood-soaked tale of revenge at the center of Mafia III. Set in the swingin’ sixties, a new Story Trailer for the game gives us another glimpse into Lincoln Clay’s war on the organized crime families that ruined his life:
Mafia III is set in the open world of 1968 New Bordeaux, a reimagined version of New Orleans bustling with activity and complete with era-inspired cars, fashion and music. After years of combat in Vietnam, Lincoln Clay knows this truth: family isn’t who you’re born with, it’s who you die for. Now, back home in New Bordeaux, Lincoln is set on escaping his criminal past. But when his surrogate family, the black mob, is betrayed and wiped out by the Italian Mafia, Lincoln builds a new family from the ashes of the old and blazes a path of military-grade revenge through those responsible. Intense gun fights, visceral hand-to-hand combat, white-knuckle driving, hard choices and street smarts will all be required to survive the mean streets of New Bordeaux. But with the right crew, it’s possible to make it to the top of the city’s underworld.
Mafia III is in development at Hangar 13, and the developer plans to release a number of downloadable add-ons and expansions for the game after its launch. A Season Pass will be available, and a special Deluxe Edition (priced at $79.99) will bundle together the main game and the Season Pass. A Collector’s Edition (Retail Price: $149.99) is also in the works, and it’ll include the main game, the Season Pass, the original game score on vinyl, a collectible art book, art prints, and more. Everyone who pre-orders any version of Mafia III will receive the Family Kick-Back Pack, which will contain three exclusive vehicles and weapons.
“Mafia III introduces a true open world, rich with its own criminal ecosystems to the franchise, while still upholding the strong narrative storytelling and immersive setting that the previous Mafia games are known for,” said Haden Blackman, Studio Head and Creative Director at Hangar 13. “New Bordeaux in 1968 provides a unique and powerful backdrop for our hard-boiled story of crime, betrayal, loyalty and revenge.”
Developers from Hangar 13 will travel to Boston this weekend for the annual PAX East convention. The Saturday panel, “Defining a New Era of Organized Crime,” will explore how the team brought the franchise into the modern day and what it was like creating a new protagonist to take on the Italian mob.
Mafia III will be available for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on October 7.
Street Fighter V’s April update will add Guile to the game later this month

Better stock up on hair gel, Guile is coming to Street Fighter V later this month.
Because the Zenny (real money) Shop still isn’t ready, Guile will be a free download for all Street Fighter V players when he’s released. However, players who haven’t purchased the Season Pass will lose access to the character once the shop goes live later this Spring. Guile’s Air Force Base Stage will also be available to download using Street Fighter V’s in-game currency.
You can check out Guile’s new look at the Capcom-Unity blog, and an overview of his hair-raising new moves can be found right here:
About Guile
In Street Fighter V, Guile retains his ability to dominate both the ground and air with his solid normal attacks and special moves, such as Sonic Boom and Somersault Kick. He also now has the ability to enter a crouch walk state called Faultless Move which allows him to keep his charge while moving forward, giving him even more options in his kit to keep his opponents in line. Guile is a great choice for those of you who are looking for a charge character who can easily control the pace of the match.V-Skill: Sonic Blade
Guile spins up sonic energy to create a Sonic Blade which acts as a stationary projectile that can also juice up his Sonic Booms. Sonic Blade can really help Guile pressure opponents on their wake-up or help him win projectile battles as it increases Sonic Boom durability!V-Trigger: Solid Puncher
Guile powers up and tosses out continuous Sonic Booms! Each button throws a Sonic Boom at a different speed, so mixing up between buttons can create interesting Sonic Boom sequences. Depending on the sequence used, this can act as a great combo extender, be used to overwhelm opponents or easily push his opponents to the corner.Critical Art: Sonic Hurricane
Guile’s most devastating attack, the Sonic Hurricane! Guile powers up and hits his opponent with a massive, multi-hit Sonic Boom. This Critical Art receives a damage and range boost while his V-Trigger is active.
Capcom also plans to implement a system to punish players who frequently disconnect during online matches as part of Street Fighter V’s April update. According to the publisher, players who disconnect early will be locked out of the game’s matchmaking service for a period of time, so habitual Rage Quitters will lose their ability to play online.

In this expansion chronicling the events following Warlords of Draenor, all hellfire breaks loose when the warlock Gul’dan, betrayer of the orcs and twisted servant of the Burning Legion, unleashes a demonic invasion force upon Azeroth unlike any the Horde and the Alliance have ever faced. To save their world from annihilation, heroes must unlock the mysteries of the mythic Broken Isles, master powerful Artifact weapons, and strike a forbidden pact with the Demon Hunters of the Illidari—vengeful disciples of the dreaded Illidan Stormrage.
Set to be released in a Standard Edition, a Digital Deluxe Edition, and a retail-only Collector’s Edition, players who pre-order World of Warcraft: Legion through WoWLegion.com will receive early access to the Demon Hunter class and the ability to boost one character up to level 100.
