Here’s the first gameplay trailer for the Daytona-inspired 90s Arcade Racer

Before Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport, racing game fans cut their teeth on “arcade racers” like Sega’s Daytona USA and Namco’s Ridge Racer.

Most of the arcades we frequented in those days have shut their doors, but the freewheelin’ spirit of those games will live on in Pelikan13’s The 90s Arcade Racer. Currently in development for the Wii U, mobile devices (iOS and Android), and PC platforms (Windows, Mac, and Linux), The 90s Arcade Racer will attempt to meld together elements from our favorites 90s arcade racers in a brand new game for modern audiences. Basically, it’s the “Snakes On A Plane” of on-the-nose game titles. But how on the nose is the title? Why not see for yourself in the first ever gameplay trailer, which has been embedded above.

The 90s Arcade Racer currently doesn’t have a release date and will be available… wait for it… when it’s ready.

stateofdecay-header

Undead Labs was gearing up to announce the final release date for State of Decay: Year-One Survival Edition at this weekend’s PAX South convention. But it looks Xbox Wire has stolen their thunder as Microsoft’s official Xbox blog spilled the beans a few days early.

According to Xbox Wire, State of Decay’s Year-One Survival Edition will released on April 28 for the PC and Xbox One. This updated version will add a nice 1080p sheen to the graphics with new textures and lighting effects. Other additions planned for the Year-One Survival Edition include new weapons, new vehicles, and new characters. Both expansion packs, Breakdown and Lifeline, will be included as well.

If you’ve already purchased State of Decay on the Xbox 360, Microsoft wants to make it worth your while to upgrade to the Year-One Survival Edition. All returning Xbox 360 players will receive a new playable character, Gurubani, a “sword-wielding Indian-American badass,” and a 33% discount off the game’s $29.99 price tag. Returning PC players will also get Gurubani and Undead Labs expects to announce a similar discount offer soon.

Undead Labs will set up shop at Booth 1059 in the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center for this weekend’s PAX South and they have plenty of giveaways planned as well as playable demo stations for State of Decay: Year-One Survival Edition.

Telltale will release Game of Thrones: The Lost Lords in two weeks

Episode Two of Telltale’s Game of Thrones adaptation is almost ready for release. The developer unveiled the debut trailer of the second episode, The Lost Lords, today. Here’s what gamers can expect, but if you haven’t completed Episode One you may not want to read any further:

House Forrester is in disarray. Their liege lord and his heir are dead, and Ironrath is occupied by Whitehill soldiers. The survival of the family depends upon those who are left.

Placed at King’s Landing, the epicenter of intrigue, Mira Forrester must weigh her loyalty to Margaery Tyrell against the needs of her family, while choosing how to play the political games of Tyrion Lannister. One misstep could spell doom for Mira and her entire family. To the far north, Gared Tuttle finds that the wall and its crows hold little love for a squire from the Wolfswood, but finds kinship in the bastard son of Ned Stark.

Gared must prove worthy of becoming a ranger in order to carry out the mission given him; one that is vital to the future of those he serves. To the east, Asher Forrester, the exiled son, is called back to Westeros to aid his family, but how can one man help when the Boltons rule the north with an iron fist? Meanwhile, an unexpected source of hope returns to the Forresters, but Ironrath is no place for the weak.

Game of Thrones: The Lost Lords will be available to download in two weeks. PC, PS3, and PS4 players will be able to play it on Tuesday, February 3 while Xbox One and Xbox 360 owners will have to wait until Wednesday, February 4. All five platforms will receive The Lost Lords before Android and iOS owners, who will be able to download it on Thursday, February 5.

Prepare for Evolve with this Survival Guide video

With three eldritch horrors living it up on the planet Shear and a variety of other deadly fauna and flora, the world of Evolve is not a safe place for humanity. So the planet’s leaders have ordered an evacuation… except for a group of Hunters who have volunteered to challenge these creatures and protect the fleeing colonists.

Since fighting a beast from beyond the stars isn’t your average job, Turtle Rock Studios has put together this “Survival Guide” to acclimate players to the harsh realities of Shear. The video breaks down all four Hunter classes (Assault, Medic, Trapper, and Support), all three Monsters (Goliath, Kraken, and Wraith), all four game modes (fighting deathmatches in Hunt, breaking eggs in Nest, rescuing colonists in Rescue, and defending generators in Defend), and the Evacuation campaign. According to Turtle Rock, the Evacuation campaign can play out in more than 800,000 different ways based on which objectives are completed by the Hunters or the Monsters.

Evolve will be released for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on February 10. Players who pre-order the game will receive the Monster Expansion Pack for free, which will add a fourth Monster as a playable character sometime this Spring.

Alien: Isolation Review: A Beautiful, Beautiful Butterfly

alienisolation-header

I consider myself quite the survival horror veteran. I was fifteen when I cut my teeth on Resident Evil. In college, my roommate and I had to take turns playing Silent Hill, and Clock Tower has me wary of all things scissors-related to this day. More recently, I tried Dead Space with the lights off… for about the first two chapters. Point being, while most of these games scared the bejesus out of me (and yes, bejesus is a word – I looked it up), they put more of an emphasis on the “horror” aspect of the game than the “survival.” By the time I reached the end of some of these games, I had enough weaponry and ammo to mow my way through countless legions of evil. When I first heard about Alien: Isolation, I thought I was in for another familiar romp through the annals of the survival horror genre. Boy, was I wrong.

And I wasn’t just wrong, but wrong wrong. The kind of wrong that bludgeoned me over the head with its wrongicity (not a word). Like the kind of wrong I was when I thought Green Lantern would be a fantastic movie. Yes, I was that misguided. And quite honestly, I couldn’t be any happier to be wrong about my preconceptions of Alien: Isolation. Because not only is this an amazing adventure, but it also truly redefines what it means to be a survival horror game. (more…)

Elder Scrolls Online to get June 9 release on PS4/Xbox One; Bethesda ends monthly fee

Bethesda has announced that some changes to the way you play will be coming soon to The Elder Scrolls Online. But first, they’ve also confirmed that the MMO will launch for the PS4 and the Xbox One in a special “Tamriel Unlimited” edition on June 9.

“Tamriel Unlimited” will serve as the basis of Bethesda’s new philosophy for The Elder Scrolls Onlibe going forward. Beginning March 17, the publisher will discontinue the game’s monthly fee for all players in a special update. For new players, this means that a one-time purchase of the game disc is all that’s required to jump into the world of The Elder Scrolls Online.

However, an optional subscription tier will still exist for those who want it. The ESO Plus plan will offer access to “exclusive in-game bonuses, a monthly allotment of crowns to use in the store, and all DLC game packs.” All current players will automatically be enrolled in ESO Plus after the “Tamriel Unlimited” update in March.

The “Tamriel Unlimited” edition of the game (on the PC, PS4, and Xbox One) will include all of its updates and content additions, including the Justice and Champion systems. For players looking to get the most out of The Elder Scrolls Online, Bethesda also plans to offer optional downloadable content in the future and an in-game Crown Store for the purchase of customization items.

To celebrate this good news, Bethesda has released a new cinematic trailer, “The Confrontation,” for The Elder Scrolls Online. It’s been embedded above.

John Malkovich is a badass janitor in this CoD: Advanced Warfare Exo Zombies trailer

If the movies have taught me anything, it’s that you do not mess with John Malkovich. And you especially don’t mess with John Malkovich during a zombie apocalypse, because he will mess you up janitor style. This is all a prelude to saying that John Malkovich will play the world’s most badass janitor ever in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare‘s Exo Zombies co-op mode. Apparently, Neil Flynn was busy.

With the Havoc Map Pack scheduled to launch (on the Xbox One and Xbox 360) in less than a week, Activision has released the first Exo Zombies gameplay trailer and it is marvelous. In addition to Malkovich, Bill Paxton is on hand as an Atlas executive along with Rose McGowan as a dual-wielding security guard. And The Walking Dead‘s Jon Bernthal does his best Jon Bernthal impression in his two seconds of screen time.
