The Evil Within Preview: Shinji Mikami Made A Game With Zombies In It (Again)

Marketing a horror title is tricky business. If you give away too much, that will spoil the scares and dissipate the tension. But you also don’t want to play things too close to the vest, as then your audience won’t have any clue what to expect. This has been the problem for Bethesda’s The Evil Within almost from the start.
The Evil Within is in development at Shinji Mikami’s new studio, Tango Gameworks. Mikami is most famous for creating Resident Evil and the franchise’s signature sequel, Resident Evil 4. So far, The Evil Within’s marketing has lead audiences to believe that it would be a tense and claustrophobic affair that would force players to run and hide from the imposing and seemingly unstoppable residents of the game’s sanitarium setting. But during a live demo presentation during the 2014 PAX East convention, we got to see a new side of The Evil Within that belies the game’s previous marketing approach and goes in a different (and not altogether wanted) direction. First image from Call of Duty 2014 revealed
During their Game Developer Conference panel last month, developers from Sledgehammer Games gave the attending audience a quick glimpse at an “in-game character image” from the currently unannounced Call of Duty 2014. Today, IGN revealed that image, an extreme close-up of a soldier, to the world.
Call of Duty 2014 is in development for next-generation platforms (PC, PS4, and Xbox One) and will be released this Fall. A current-generation version of the game (for the PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U) is also expected, but remains unconfirmed as of now. An official announcement of the game will likely occur next month.
Seen at PAX East 2014: We Are Doomed

Back at PAX Prime 2013, I took a side trip to the Seattle Indies Expo, which was held the same weekend, and it was full of some great indie games. As I was stumbling around, excited to be in a more low-key environment, I came upon a bright, neon-colored game, manned by two gentlemen. One of them handed me a controller, and the other started to pitch the game to me. But before he could get very far, I discovered my laser, and the look on my face and the noise that escaped me indicated that I got it. The man pitching the game was Mobeen Fikree, the madman behind We Are Doomed. After playing it for the rest of the night, I plastered the screen with a “PAXpocalypse” tag, because despite the fact that he wasn’t actually on the show floor, Fikree’s game was, by far, one of the best games I played that entire weekend. Dragon Age: Inquisition will launch on October 7
BioWare has kept Dragon Age: Inquisition shrouded in secrecy almost since the day it was announced. But a brand new gameplay trailer, released this morning, has given gamers an extensive look at “The Inquisitor” and his quest to stop a band of demons from terrorizing the land of Thedas. It’s likely that BioWare (and publisher EA Games) will soon ramp up their promotion of Inquisition as they also revealed that the game will be released for the PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One on October 7.
That date will be a crowded one for fans of sword and sorcery epics as WB Games plans to release Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor on October 7 as well.

Continue Countdown #2 – The Evil Within, Borderlands: Pre-Sequel, Super Mario 20, More
The second episode of Warp Zoned’s “Continue Countdown” is now available to watch through our YouTube channel. It’s a PAX East kind of show as Editor-In-Chief John Scalzo, Staff Writer Mike Ryan, and special guest Adam Woolcott discuss the blandness of The Evil Within, the bizarreness of The Behemoth’s Game 4, and the baffling choice to put Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel on the PS3 and Xbox 360.
The trio also delves into the Console War Between the PS4 and Xbox One, next-gen remakes like The Last of Us Remastered, and whether the inclusion of Marvel characters will affect our decision to purchase Disney Infinity 2.0. Finally, they looked at yet another piece of Beyond Good & Evil 2 concept art, the release date gap between the 3DS and Wii U versions of Super Smash Bros. 4, and the quasi-announcement of Super Mario Bros. 20.

Hyper Light Drifter “probably” won’t be released until early 2015

Those of you who were hoping to get you hands on Heart Machine’s much-anticipated action RPG Hyper Light Drifter may have to wait at least another few months. During this year’s PAX East, studio head Alex Preston revealed to Destructoid that, while the game was progressing, an early 2015 release date is “probably […] more realistic” than the current late 2014 target.
Speaking about how the company had managed to raise $600,000 for the game on Kickstarter, Preston said, “We’ve seen a lot of backers come out [to PAX East], and it’s been fantastic to meet them, and the reception from everyone else has been pretty damn good.”
Hyper Light Drifter, an homage to 16-bit RPG classics but with modern mechanics, has been described as a fusion of the best bits of franchises like Zelda and Diablo. To find out more about the game, you should check out our own PAX East preview right here.
