New Releases: Thief, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, Layton: Azran Legacy, More

Square Enix Montreal will attempt to go two-for-two in the reboot department this week with the release of Thief for the PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. After masterfully resurrecting the Deus Ex franchise a few years ago with Deus Ex: Human Revolution, gamers are optimistic about the first Thief game in a decade.
Also available this week is Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 (PC, PS3, Xbox 360), the concluding chapter in the “Lords of Shadow” saga. Know one knows what’s next for the Castlevania franchise, but its future looks bright on home consoles once again. Over in the handheld realm, another final chapter will be written as Nintendo and Level-5 will release Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy for the 3DS. The Layton series will live on, but Azran Legacy will be the last game to star the good Professor himself.
Jumping from lasts to firsts, PopCap Games will release their first shooter game this week, the Xbox One/Xbox 360-exclusive Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare. Finally this week, a pair of classic game collections will be available to purchase with your gaming dollar, both from Bandai Namco: Tales of Symphonia Chronicles (PS3) and Pac-Man Museum (PC, PS3, Xbox 360).
A complete list of this week’s new releases can be found after the break. (more…)

IndieCade East 2014 After-Report: Day 3 – I’m Out of Cliches

Sunday was the third and final day of IndieCade East 2014 and, like all great events, it was bittersweet to see it end. There were plenty of great talks and workshops, another full day of Show & Tell games, and an amazing event called the GameSlam in which developers had three minutes to pitch their games quickly and succinctly. We spent most of our time at the GameSlam and checking out some of the talks before heading back home to Philadelphia. (more…)

IndieCade East 2014 After-Report: Day 2 – The Belly of the Beast

Day two of IndieCade 2014 was nonstop action and fun. There was an area sectioned off from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM for “Show & Tells,” where developers could show off unreleased games and conference-goers could playtest prototypes. There were dozens of amazing games to check out, and that’s just what we did. (more…)
Strike Suit Zero: Director’s Cut coming to PS4, Xbox One in March
In Born Ready’s trailer for Strike Suit Zero: Director’s Cut, there are three simple steps to winning: “Pilot the Strike Suit. Obliterate the enemy. Save Earth.” That’s easy enough, right? The Director’s Cut, which is referred to as the “definitive version of the game,” has “a restructured campaign… with an adapted story and all new dialogue,” according to Born Ready’s announcement. This restructuring allows players to man the Strike Suit even sooner, jumping right into the action.
Strike Suit Zero: Director’s Cut will be available for the PS4 and Xbox One in March, and Born Ready will be announcing a PC version “later this spring.”

Sacred 3 will be available for PC, PS3, Xbox 360 this Summer
“Victory Is Ours. Glory Is Mine,” reads the tagline for Sacred 3, the latest installment in the Sacred franchise. Publisher Deep Silver announced that the game will be released this Summer on the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. The game has drop-in, drop-out co-op multiplayer both local (for two players) and online (for four players).
Remy van Leeuwen, Brand Manager of Deep Silver, said, “The paramount development goal for Sacred 3 has been to create a seamless online and offline co-op experience… By creating a game built around the central concept of co-op gameplay, we’re expanding the series to new audiences without compromising the rich lore and fantasy of the Sacred universe.”
The game will also feature recurring characters from the series, including the Seraphim, Ancarian, Khukuhru and the Safiri. Return to Ancaria this summer on the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.
Cliff Bleszinski wants to develop for the PC from now on because of the community
Leigh Alexander captured a candid interview with Cliff Bleszinski in her usual lovely style over at Gamasutra. It’s a worthwhile read, and full of brilliant points about where the video game industry is headed. Bleszinski, personally, sees himself moving towards the PC for his next game. As Alexander said, “Starting his own studio is the direction in which he’s leaning, and he wants to benefit from a modern online environment that allows development teams to have closer relationships with their players and welcome them into the iterative process.”
Bleszinski himself had this to say:
“PC is where I’m going to wind up. That’s where the community is… The trend will always be the core. If I start a studio, I want a community manager there day one. I want weekly video or podcasts; I want task lists available on the subreddit. When my wife and I play Rust, before we play, we check the subreddit. Whenever you get a little bored with a game, someone issues an update. I feel like a game developer again, where I get to check out the build list.”
Something else struck me in the interview as well. Bleszinski also told Alexander: “The whole ‘old guard,’ where you get a Game Informer cover and an E3 reveal, is dead. I’ll never make another disc-based game for the rest of my career, and [at E3] they’re trying to woo buyers from Target and Walmart?” This fits with Ken Levine’s statement about focusing on digital games made by smaller teams.
This “old guard” is going to reshape the face of the industry. It truly is an evolutionary time in video game development.
