Obsidian teases “Project X” with a four, an ouroboros, and some words
Obsidian Entertainment has relaunched their official website with a teaser page for their next game, currently codenamed “Project X.” The mysterious “Project X” is symbolized by the number four surrounded by an ouroboros (the snake eating itself on your right). The image is accompanied by a short discussion and a link to Obsidian’s “Project X” forum:
“What do the words mean?”
“Nothing. The Dirge of Eír Glanfath is sound without form, a lone voice crying out in mourning because it must.”
The forumgoers throw out all sorts of possible answers to the question of “What is Project X?” including Dungeon Siege 4, a Wheel of Time game, Fallout 4 (unlikely, as Bethesda is working on it internally), or an original property set in a fantasy setting. Of course, the four could just mean an announcement is coming four days from now.
They’ve also discovered additional flavor text in the source code of the teaser page:
To tenderness, fellowship. To fellowship, vigilance. So bring we all to the Night Market. I am the Spindle of Esenath. Know me by my light and stand with me in darkness.
So now the only question is, what do those words mean?

New Releases: NHL 13, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Battlefield 3 Premium, More

A pair of fighting games lead this week’s new release slate. There’s EA’s NHL 13 (available for the PS3 and Xbox 360) and then there’s Tekken Tag Tournament 2 (also available for the PS3 and Xbox 360). See, it’s funny because there’s a lot of fighting in hockey and… eh, moving on…
EA hasn’t annualized the Battlefield series (yet), but for those of you who missed last year’s Battlefield 3, it’s now available in a “Premium Edition” for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.
Speaking of re-releases, Nintendo will make Kirby’s Dream Collection available on Sunday the 16th. And in honor of Finding Nemo‘s 3D re-release, Disney is bringing Finding Nemo: Escape to the Big Blue to the 3DS and DS. Seems appropriate.
Finally, also available this week is the Kinect-powered basketball dribbling sim NBA Baller Beats and the PC adventure game Eternal Journey: New Atlantis.

Wii U version of Ghost Recon Online is “on hold”

Despite Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemont praising the Wii U numerous times this year, and with the company developing the very promising ZombiU as well as bringing Assassin’s Creed III to Nintendo’s new console, it seems work has stalled on the Wii U version of Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Online. The official line from the game’s producer, Theo Sanders, is that the team wants to focus all of their energy on the PC version before work begins on any console version. His full statement can be read here:
“As of right now, the entire Ghost Recon team is focused on the PC version only. The Wii U version is on hold. If in the future we have an opportunity to address it again, we’ll make future announcements. But as of right now we’re focused completely on the PC version. It’s not a reaction to anything specific happening to Wii U. It was a really fun, cool platform to develop for. But you realise once you launch an online service that it’s an all-consuming effort, so we really wanted to have all hands on deck. It was the same dev team working on both SKUs, and we really wanted to focus on doing the PC version right.
It’s hard to say how the future will go for Ghost Recon Online. I think in the future, as different platforms evolve towards service models and towards being really online-driven, community-driven platforms, then we’ll definitely be looking at what our options are… I think it’s one of the strengths of the PC platform and I believe it’s something that all console manufacturers understand to be a strength of the PC platform, and will definitely be looking for interesting and innovative ways to bring their own experiences to.”
Despite the meek promise that the company may return to the project in the future, reading between the lines suggests something else is afoot, especially given all the references to online play in the PC market. It sounds as if Ubisoft is going to wait until after the launch of the Wii U to see if Nintendo’s new online system attracts the numbers deemed necessary to move forward with a free-to-play game.
With Nintendo due to make a major Wii U announcement next week, hopefully with more specific details on the system’s price and its launch date, lets hope it attracts more positive word of mouth than their E3 showing this year.

Darksiders II, NSMB2, Kingdom Hearts 3D reign supreme as August’s bestselling games

The Death that stars in Darksiders II isn’t taking a holiday, but he did take the top spot in The NPD Group’s list of bestselling games in August.
Two other August releases, New Super Mario Bros 2 and Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, round out the top three, making August the first time all Summer that three new releases lead the bestseller list. New releases Sleeping Dogs (#6) and Transformers: Fall of Cybertron (#7) also made the list.
The remainder of the August top ten looks very similar to previous months and you can find it after the break. (more…)
Call of Juarez: Gunslinger returns to the Wild West
Ubisoft and developer Techland are bringing the Call of Juarez series back to its Wild West roots. The series previously took a short detour into the modern day with 2011’s Call of Juarez: The Cartel.
Announced today, Call of Juarez: Gunslinger follows an unnamed bounty hunter as he chases down “the West’s most notorious outlaws” (including Butch Cassidy!). Check out the live action trailer above and start drawing your “Wanted” poster for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 game now.
No release date for Call of Juarez: Gunslinger was announced, but I bet it’ll be released sometime in 2013, by gum.

Gearbox adds female characters to Aliens: Colonial Marines multiplayer
Given that the Alien film series has always featured strong female roles (including Ellen Ripley, Private Vasquez or Dr. Elizabeth Shaw in Prometheus), it seemed not only sexist but basically wrong when Aliens: Colonial Marines producer Brian Burleson announced there would be no female characters in the multiplayer portion of the game. After a major online petition, signed by over 4,000 people including several associated with the Aliens film, it finally caught the attention of Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford.
Speaking to Eurogamer at this weekend’s PAX Prime, the company’s head honcho revealed that the co-op mode and online multiplayer will both feature at least one playable female character. The company released artwork of the co-op character, Private Jennifer Running, a fiery, short-haired redhead. Whether she was created after the petition, or existed all along and was only revealed early because of the outcry, we will never really know.
While it is a great result for female gamers, or those males who wish to get it touch with their female roots, should we really have been having this discussion over a game set in the Aliens universe? What do you think, readers?

2K announces four DLC expansions, Season Pass for Borderlands 2

In a move certain to fan the flames of the DLC debate, 2K and Gearbox have announced four additional downloadable campaigns for Borderlands 2 before the retail game is even out. Each one will cost $9.99, meaning the total comes to $40, two thirds of the game’s actual price. Thankfully the company is offering a Season Pass, which will ensure that you’re the proud owner of all four DLC campaigns for only $30, saving you $10.
Minus the Season Pass, this is the same amount of content Gearbox created for the first Borderlands game.
I love Borderlands and the DLC for the original, But I still bought them through gritted teeth over the realization of spending $100 on a single game. Especially when the Game of the Year edition was released with all four campaigns included (and is now available for a mere $20). So if you love Gearbox’s humorous FPS and are flush with cash, the Season Pass may be for you. But for the rest of us, hold out for the GotY edition, which given current trends will probably be out this time next year.
Borderlands 2 will be available for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 on September 18.

Brothers In Arms: Furious 4 will drop the Brothers In Arms name

Last month, Gearbox Software President Randy Pitchford promised that the company was still toiling away at Brothers In Arms: Furious 4. This weekend at PAX Prime, he revealed that while the game still hasn’t been canceled, it’ll no longer carry the “Brothers In Arms” name.
“I wanted to let everyone know that that game’s no longer going to be a Brothers In Arms game. It’s going to be an all-new IP,” Pitchford said.
First revealed at E3 2011, Furious 4’s comic tone was at odds with the franchise’s formerly serious structure. Instead, the co-op shooter seemed to be taking its cues from Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds.
The all-new Furious 4 will be re-announced at a Gearbox Community Day event later this year.
