See how Mass Effect 3 is “Better With Kinect” in new trailer; Demo dated for February 14
Are you still curious how Mass Effect 3 will work with the Kinect sensor? Then you should definitely check out the trailer above, which features the BioWare team showing the world why the game is “Better With Kinect.”
Oh, and it also confirms that the Mass Effect 3 demo will be available to download from the Xbox Live Marketplace on February 14, making the question “Commander Shepard, will you be my Valentine?” much less awkward.
The demo will also be available on the PC and PS3, but a release date was not confirmed and I’m going to take a wild guess and say those platforms won’t have Kinect support either.

Max Payne 3 shoots up Sao Paolo on May 15
After years of false starts, delays, and possible cancellation, Rockstar Games has announced that, after one more delay, Max Payne 3 will be available in stores (for the PS3 and Xbox 360) on May 15 (May 18 for countries outside of North America)! PC gamers will have to wait until May 29 (June 1 for countries outside of North America) to get their hands on Max’s next case.
“Max Payne 3 brings powerful storytelling back to the action-shooter genre,” said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. “Rockstar Studios are delivering a game that’s both incredibly cinematic and very, very intense to play.”
Max Payne 3 takes the titular anti-hero outside his New York City home and drops him in the sunny landscape of Sao Paolo, Brazil. There, he works as a bodyguard for Rodrigo Branco, a wealthy executive. But trouble finds Max wherever he goes when Branco’s wife is kidnapped and Max is tasked with finding her.
In addition to the game’s new locale, Max Payne 3 will also add a multiplayer component to the series for the first time.

Uncharted 3 leads the 2012 AIAS Interactive Achievement Awards with 12 nominations
The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences has announced the nominees for the 15th annual Interactive Achievement Awards and, to save everybody some time, they just recycled the nominee list from 2010.
OK, not really. But a surprising number of games on this year’s ballot are part of franchises that took home some IAA hardware in 2010. Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception leads all nominees with 12 nominations, just like Uncharted 2, which nearly swept the 2010 IAAs. Batman: Arkham Asylum won every award that Uncharted 2 didn’t in 2010, and so it goes in 2012 as Batman: Arkham City racked up six nominations this year.
Other games with more than five nominations include Portal 2 (ten), L.A. Noire (nine), Battlefield 3, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (six each).
Many of those multiple nominees (Arkham City, Skyrim, Portal 2, and Uncharted 3) will be involved in the five-way battle royale for the IAA Game of the Year award. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword rounds out the the category.
Hit the break for a complete list of every nominated game in all categories. And remember, the 2012 AIAS IAAs will be handed out during this year’s DICE Summit on February 9. (more…)

Shocker: Modern Warfare 3 leads December NPD list
The NPD Group has released their list of the bestselling games in December and, once again, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 tops the list. The shooter was joined in the top ten by its comrade in arms, Battlefield 3, which gunned down the number five slot.
The rest of the list includes a cross-section of some of this year’s absolute biggest games including Just Dance 3 at #2, Skyrim at #3, Assassin’s Creed: Revelations at #7, and Batman: Arkham City at #10. And Nintendo’s 3DS is finally coming alive with two titles in the top ten: Mario Kart 7 at #4 and Super Mario 3D Land at #9.
Here’s the complete NPD Top Ten for the month of December 2011:
1. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, PC)
2. Just Dance 3 (Wii, Xbox 360, PS3)
3. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
4. Mario Kart 7 (3DS)
5. Battlefield 3 (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
6. Madden NFL 12 (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, PSP, PS2)
7. Assassin’s Creed: Revelations (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
8. NBA 2K12 (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, PSP, PS2, PC)
9. Super Mario 3D Land (3DS)
10. Batman: Arkham City (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)

Nominees for 2012 Writers Guild Award for Outstanding Videogame Writing announced
The Writers Guild of America has announced the five nominees who will battle it out for this year’s Writers Guild Award for Outstanding Achievement in Videogame Writing.
The Assassin’s Creed team at Ubisoft is once again up for a Writers GUild Award thanks to their work on Assassin’s Creed: Revelations. The previous game in the series, Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, won the award last year.
The writing teams behind Batman: Arkham City, Brink, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, and Mortal Kombat have also been nominated for the Writers Guild Award.
Turning the Mortal Kombat mythos into a coherent story was quite a feat, so I’m pulling for the team at NetherRealm Studios.
You can see the complete list of nominated writers after the break and check back on February 19 to find out who won. (more…)

Modern Warfare 3 Content Season trailer hints at single-player expansion
Are you ready to go behind-the-scenes of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Content Season, specificially the new maps, “Liberation” and “Piazza?” Then you’re in luck, as Infinity Ward has released a video detailing all of the work the team is putting into the first of 20 content drops they have planned for Modern Warfare 3 in 2012.
Most interesting of all is the fact that Robert Bowling, Community Manager at Infinity Ward, strongly hinted that the team is planning at least one expansion to the single-player campaign when he summed up the new content that’ll be available for Modern Warfare 3: “Awesome multiplayer, new Spec Ops missions, extensions to the story, new game modes that we can add…”
The last (and so far, only) time a Call of Duty game received a single-player expansion was 2004’s Call of Duty: United Offensive.

Nine months of CoD Modern Warfare 3 DLC announced
You knew they were coming, and now, Activision has announced the details of the first two downloadable maps for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
Scheduled to drop January 24 for Xbox 360-owning Call of Duty Elite subscribers, “Liberation” and “Piazza” will bring the war to Central Park and a serene Italian villa. In “Liberation,” players will find “a vast, militarized landscape, ripe for long-range sniper and LMG fire, with mounted turrets on either end that lend power to anyone brave enough to expose themselves in exchange for deadly firepower.” Meanwhile, “Piazza” is considered “the idyllic Italian getaway that is anything but, where tight corners and branching pathways pose great risk at every turn.”
Call of Duty Elite users will also receive a variety of content drops throughout 2012. At least once per month, Activision plans to unleash a new piece of content on the CoD Elite community. In addition to the maps, another piece of content will launch in mid-February with two more scheduled for March. All told, at least 20 pieces of DLC will be released for Modern Warfare 3 between now and September.
All of the CoD Elite content drops will be available first for Xbox 360 owners with PC and PS3 subscribers getting them “at a later time.”
But speaking of March, that’s how long non-Call of Duty Elite subscribers will have to wait to get their hands on these maps, when the first “Modern Warfare 3 Content Collection” will be made available for download.
That’s the sound of Activision selling many more CoD Elite subscriptions. Dismissed!

New Releases: National Geographic Challenge! for PS3, More (sort of)
Did I not warn you last week that the month of January would be an incredibly slow time for new releases? I hope you believed me, as this week the only new releases we’re going to get are…
National Geographic Challenge! for the PS3. A National Geographic-themed trivia game that has been available on the Wii and Xbox 360 for a few weeks now…
Play 101: Premium Games Collection, a budget collection of minigames for the PC…
And My Pet Puppy 3D, a pet simulator for the 3DS (yes, another one).
Once again, the download scene will supply us with several interesting new games this week including the helicopter sim Choplifter HD and the freaky horror show that is Amy. We’ll have more on those later in the week.
