This means war! Modern Warfare 3’s story, multiplayer, more leaked
WARNING! SPOILERS BELOW!
Do you hear that sound? It’s the sound of a dozen Activision executives crying their eyes out over the massive amount of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 information that leaked onto the Internet this morning.
Kotaku was the lucky recipient of this intel, which includes details on the game’s story, multiplayer modes & maps, concept art, and a whole lot more.
Kotaku’s sources confirm the developer triple team of Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer Games and Raven Software are hard at work on Modern Warfare 3. The three teams have come together to create a globe-hopping game that follows up directly from the end of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. All of the loose story threads and the fates of every major character from the first two games will be wrapped up in MW3 along with introducing two new Delta Force operatives: “Frost” and “Sandman.”
This video is a travelogue of all the places you’ll go in Modern Warfare 3 and “how you’ll kill.” Opening with a Russian invasion of New York City, the two-minute video shows the Stock Exchange under siege, a battle on the Hudson River, a terrorist attack in London, fighting in Berlin, spelunking in Parisian sewers and the aftermath of an attack by a Somali warlord. The game’s final fight is said to take place in Dubai.
As far as multiplayer modes go, the well-loved Spec Ops mode returns in based “Mission” and “Survival” (AKA Horde) flavors.
Finally (and perhaps most importantly), Kotaku was able to nail down a release date for Modern Warfare 3: November 8, 2011.

Daily Scoop: May 12, 2011 – Nearly the weekend
It’s nearly the weekend, which is exciting, because I’m going to try to get as much gaming done as possible! I know it’ll be beautiful outside. I’ll open the windows, ok??? Oh, and D & D was fun last night – thanks for asking! I didn’t have a character made, so I got to be some hot, pre-made elven rogue. I was super nervous, since I hadn’t played in a really long time, but it was awesome. And now I feel like I’ve got +10 to moxy!
Today’s Amazon Deal of the Day in video games is for all of you PC gamers out there: Buy a Mionix Naos 5000 Laser Gaming Mouse, get a Mionix Sargas 360 Mouse Pad! The mouse is $64.99 down from $89.99, and the pad is $14.99, so that’s almost $40 off! If you’ve been waiting to replace that old crappy mouse, today is a good day for you.
In t-shirt news, the dudes over at Penny Arcade have two new t-shirts this month, and they’re also offering them packaged at a cheaper price with a fancy hoody! WOO! There’s the Hipster Gabe tee (also available in lady’s sizes), the Internet Dickwad Theory 2.0 tee (in lady’s sizes as well), and the Insert Coin hoodie. For $40, you can also get any four of these shirts packaged with the hoodie as well! So that’s Hipster Gabe shirt with hoodie (for dudes or girls) and Internet Dickwad Theory 2.0 shirt with hoodie (for dudes or girls). Whew. That’s a lot of new stuff! The Hipster shirt with hoodie is tempting me right now…
I was into PAX before it was a show that sold out in three weeks!

Creative Assembly working on Alien game
They say that in space, no one can hear you scream. But on Earth, that sound you hear is the utter shock of Alien fans as Sega has revealed they’re working on another game based on the series.
The development reins for this untitled Alien game have been handed to The Creative Assembly, a team best known for the Total War series of strategy games. So is Total War: LV-426 in the works? We don’t know because, actually, Sega doesn’t want to talk about the game’s genre just yet.
Instead, the publisher and developer prefer to talk about how awesome their untitled, officially unannounced game will be. Creative Assembly’s Creative Director, Mike Simpson, told CVG that Sega told him to make an “award-winning” game. While Sega West CEO Mike Hayes said, “We want this to be a peer to the likes of Dead Space 2.”
Wow. Never let it to be said that Sega doesn’t dream big. OK, maybe the guys at Obsidian who were working on the now-canceled Alien RPG can say that.

Rumor: CoD Modern Warfare 3 boxart revealed
Kotaku is claiming that they’ve gotten their hands on some leaked boxart for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. The image has also appeared on the Electric Hydra forums.
Activision talked about the next entry in the Call of Duty series during their quarterly financial report on Monday. But aside from calling it “awesome,” company executives were extremely tightlipped about the upcoming game. As of right now, we don’t even know who’s developing the game, let alone if it’ll be a new entry in the Modern Warfare series.
Also popping up is the logo for something called Call of Duty: Elite, which may be that Beachhead-helmed online platform for Call of Duty that will “support in-game integration and bring online experiences and console play together.” You can catch this and the MW3 logo after the break.
So what do you think? Is this just an elaborate Photoshop job? A hoax? Or something else entirely? Sound off in the comments. (more…)

Portal 2 Authoring Tools step into open beta
If you ever daydreamed of creating your own Portal 2 levels, now’s your chance. Valve has released the same tools they used to create the game, and they’re available in the Tools tab in Steam. The tools allow you to pretty much create anything you want, from maps for single player and co-op, to making your own character skins, 3D models, sound effects, and music. All you self-conscious creators shouldn’t be intimidated, either, as Valve has included example maps and instances to help you get started. The Authoring Tools are still in beta, so be sure to leave feedback for the devs.
As there’s only so many ways to overcome the group of challenges in Portal 2’s single player and co-op, this is sure to go a long way towards lengthening the lifespan of your game. Be sure to check out our review of Portal 2 as well as an exclusive Warp Zoned interview with the game’s writer, Erik Wolpaw.
A few more Hitman: Absolution details
After releasing a teaser trailer this morning, Square Enix has revealed a little bit more about Hitman: Absolution this afternoon.
Scheduled for release in 2012 for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360, Hitman: Absolution that developer IO Interactive is calling a “familiar and yet significantly different experience from other Hitman games.” The game will be powered by the all-new Glacier 2 engine, which is an enhanced version of the company’s proprietary engine last seen in Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days. We’ve also learned a few storyline details:
Hitman: Absolution follows Agent 47, a cold-blooded assassin, who takes on his most dangerous contract to date. Betrayed by those he once trusted — and now hunted by the police — he suddenly finds himself at the center of a dark conspiracy and must embark on a personal journey through a corrupt and twisted world.
Hitman: Absolution will make its worldwide debut at this year’s E3 Expo, which will be held from June 7-9.

Crysis 2 Retaliation Map Pack coming May 17
Crysis 2 was far from perfect, but you can’t deny that it had a strong multiplayer component. Well, that component will be getting a little stronger come May 17 when the Retaliation Map Pack drops for PC, Xbox 360, and PS3 (hopefully). It’ll cost you $9.99 and come with four new maps: Park Avenue, Transit, Shipyard, and Compound. While most of the footage above contains the awkward character animations reminiscent of Halo (which is probably why Bungie always used live action to hype up their games), the first-person gameplay looks glorious as ever.
I might actually have to grab this when the PlayStation Network gets back up.
Remedy reveals more Alan Wake
Remedy’s Head of Franchise Development, Oskari Hakkinen, has reached out to Joystiq to confirm that a new Alan Wake mystery project is in the works.
Hakkinen was encouraged to send the confirmation due to a Joystiq report that “Alan Wake 2” had appeared on the resume of an artist who claimed to work on the title. The “2” part in the title appears to be a mistake, but Remedy also revealed that the new project is not DLC for the original Alan Wake:
Fans of the franchise will be excited to learn that yes, more Wake is coming! But to be absolutely certain to avoid confusion, this next Wake installment will not be Alan Wake 2. But neither will it be DLC. The rest we’re saving for our official announcement when we’ll actually SHOW YOU.
So it’s not a sequel and it’s not DLC. So it’s either a sidestory (in the same way that Capcom doesn’t consider Resident Evil: Code Veronica a sequel to Resident Evil 3: Nemesis) or it’s a new edition of Alan Wake that contains new content (and I would guess the previously released DLC as well).
There’s no details on when it’ll be officially announced, but Remedy did say the game has a tentative release date of Fall 2011. Hakkinen also said that “platforms” (that’s plural, with an “S”) for the game would be announced soon. So it sounds like Alan Wake may finally be lighting up the desktops of PC gamers this Fall as well.
