PS Store Today: NBA Live 14, Soul Calibur II HD, Need For Speed: Rivals, More

The first PlayStation Store update in the post-PS4 era brings with it the digital release of NBA Live 14. EA’s first next gen basketball sim boasts a new “revolutionary physics-based dribbling system” known as BounceTek as “fresh content and challenges” delivered daily.
Over on the PS3 side of the store, gamers will be able to download another major EA release, Need For Speed: Rivals. The racer will be joined by Farming Simulator, a… er… farming simulator, and Adventure Time: Explore the Dungeon Because I DON’T KNOW, the latest adventure starring Finn and Jake.
The newly rechristened PS3 Digital Games storefront will feature the return of Namco Bandai’s Soul Calibur universe with Soul Calibur II HD Online. This re-release includes every Soul Calibur II character as well Heichachi (of Tekken fame) and Spawn (of Spawn fame).
More information about all of these games (and many more) can be found after the break. And as always, a complete rundown of this week’s new game add-ons can be found at the PlayStation Blog. (more…)
Spike TV announces the nominees for 2013 VGX Awards

The nominees for the 2013 VGX Awards (previously known as the Video Game Awards) have been announced by Spike TV and it looks like this year’s show will be dominated by Grand Theft Auto V, BioShock Infinite, The Last of Us, and Tomb Raider. Those four games, along with Super Mario 3D World, will duke it out for this year’s “Game of the Year” honor.
Grand Theft Auto V lead all games with four additional nominations (“Best PlayStation,” “Best Xbox,” “Action Adventure,” and “Soundtrack”) as well as a “Best Studio” nomination for Rockstar North, “Best Actor” nomination for Steven Ogg, and two “Best Song” nods. The Fulbright Company’s Gone Home leads this year’s indie charge with two nominations (“Best PC” and “Best Independent”) and a “Best Studio” nomination for the developer.
And in a fun twist, Troy Baker will be competing against himself in the “Best Actor” category as his Joel (from The Last of Us) will do battle with his Booker DeWitt (from BioShock Infinite).
The 2013 VGX Awards will air on Spike TV on Saturday, December 7. A complete list of this year’s nominees can be found after the break. (more…)

Square Enix delays Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster to March 2014
Square Enix is finally ready to announce a North American release date for Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster. The two-game package will be available for the PS3 on March 18, 2014. As you may have noticed, that’s quite a bit beyond the remake’s originally projected “Fall 2013” release. In fact, when it’s finally released, Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster will have spent more time in development (916 days from the initial announcement) than the original Final Fantasy X (686 days).
In honor of the release date announcement, Square Enix has uploaded a brand new trailer, which you can view above. They’ve also confirmed that gamers who pre-order Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster will be upgraded to a Limited Edition that comes with an exclusive artbook.
But bad news for Vita owners, the handheld version of Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster (which was to be released separately as Final Fantasy X HD Remaster and Final Fantasy X-2 HD Remaster) appears to be canceled. The Vita version was not part of today’s announcement and all mention of Sony’s handheld has been stripped from the remake’s official website.

December 7’s VGX Awards will replace the Spike TV Video Game Awards

The Spike TV Video Game Awards are dead! But the long-running awards show isn’t going away. Instead, it’s been renamed the “VGX Awards.” Oh good, many gamers worried that the awards show had an image problem before, adding an unneeded “X” to the name is obviously a step in the right direction.
Dodgy name change aside, the new VGX Awards might actually be moving in the right direction. The dance party atmosphere has been replaced by an “intimate studio setting” and a Hollywood host was passed over in favor of Geoff Keighley of GameTrailers TV. But like in years past, the show will include World Premiere game trailers, “extended demos of the next generation of games, and interactive one-on-one interviews.”
This year’s nominees will be revealed at a later date, but viewer voting for the “Most Anticipated Game” award is now open. Your five choices are Destiny, South Park: The Stick of Truth, TitanFall, Watch Dogs, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
The 2013 VGX Awards will be broadcast on Spike TV on Saturday, December 7 at 6:00 PM. The show will also be livestreamed on VGXLive.com, Spike.com, GameTrailers.com, Twitch, Hulu, Yahoo Screen, ComedyCentral.com MTV.com, MTV2.com, BET.com, and through apps available on the Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3, and iOS/Android devices.
Ultra Street Fighter IV will be released in May or June next year

Capcom is still keeping quiet on when Ultra Street Fighter IV will be released, but they’ve narrowed the window somewhat.
According to a post on the Capcom-Unity blog, the publisher has revealed that the arcade edition of Ultra Street Fighter IV will be available in April 2014. The PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 edition will be released shortly after that, but “before EVO [2014].” Since the 2014 Evolution World Finals are set to begin on July 11, we can assume that the home release of Ultra Street Fighter IV will be available sometime in May or June.
For more Ultra Street Fighter IV news, head over to Capcom-Unity for an updated look at the game’s new characters: Elena, Rolento, Hugo, and Poison.

The Last of Us: Left Behind expansion will let you play as Ellie
Even though the PS4 has ushered in the next generation of gaming, Sony isn’t done with the PS3 just yet. During yesterday’s PS4 launch event, Naughty Dog gave us our first glimpse at “Left Behind,” the first single-player expansion for The Last of Us.
The Last of Us: Left Behind will give players something they’ve been asking for ever since The Last of Us was released to rave reviews this Summer: The chance to control Ellie. Ashley Johnson will return to reprise her role as Joel’s sidekick, but Joel is nowhere to be seen. Instead, “Left Behind” takes place before Ellie met Joel, when she was enrolled at a military boarding school in the Boston quarantine zone. It’s there that she meets Riley (first chronicled in the comic tie-in The Last of Us: American Dream), a “mentor” and friend who will accompany her in “Left Behind.”
The Last of Us: Left Behind is currently scheduled for an early 2014 and will be available for $14.99. Unless you purchased the Last of Us Season Pass, then it’s free.

Grand Theft Auto V is October 2013’s best-selling game
Once again, Grand Theft Auto V reigns supreme. The latest entry in Rockstar’s blockbuster franchise remains atop the NPD Group’s monthly tabulations of the best-selling games at retail.
It’s important to note that GTA5 didn’t pull off this repeat performance against a group of lightweights. The remaining spots in the top ten, all nine of them, were claimed by new releases. You can check out the rest of the top ten right here and, if you gambled that Pokemon X would sell more copies than Pokemon Y, it’s time to collect:
Bestselling Games in October 2013
1. Grand Theft Auto V (Xbox 360, PS3)
2. Pokemon X (3DS)
3. Pokemon Y (3DS)
4. Battlefield 4 (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
5. Batman: Arkham Origins (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U, PC)
6. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U)
7. NBA 2K14 (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
8. Skylanders Swap Force (Wii, Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U, 3DS)
9. Lego Marvel Super Heroes (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U, 3DS, Vita, PC)
10. WWE 2K14 (Xbox 360, PS3)
According to Joystiq, GTA5 wasn’t the only big winner last month. The entire industry had a very profitable four weeks as last month’s software sales were higher than the same period from 2012, making October 2013 the third month in a row to see year-over-year sales gains.
