Actor who plays Kevin Butler is being sued by Sony

If you watched TV last month, you likely saw Sony’s fictional spokesman, Kevin Butler (AKA actor Jerry Lambert), in a commercial for Bridgestone’s “Buy Four Tires, Get a Wii” promotion. While “Kevin Butler” was never a real person, he’s become the closest thing to a mascot Sony’s had this generation. So it was rather chuckle-worthy to see him, even indirectly, shilling for Nintendo.

But Sony doesn’t think it’s a laughing matter. The consolemaker has decided to sue Lambert, through his company Wildcat Creek, and Bridgestone for trademark infringement. And they’ve likely got a pretty good case too as Lambert’s portrayal of a Bridgestone pitchman (which began on August 27) overlaps with the most recent updates on the “Kevin Butler” Twitter feed (the last one was on August 31).

As of this writing, GameStop is still offering the “Kevin Butler DLC Pack” as a pre-order bonus for gamers who purchase LittleBigPlanet Karting.

Joe Danger 2 explodes onto PSN on October 9 with bonus content

This Tuesday, October 9, Hello Games’ stunt bike extravaganza Joe Danger 2 lands on the PlayStation Network in North America. With a bargain price tag of $14.99, gamers will have over 125 levels to complete, which the developer has worked out at over 50 hours of gameplay, more than most full retail releases!

Hello Games has crammed the new game full of features, including a prototype version of the first game lovingly referred to as “Joe Danger Gaiden.” The developer has revived it, and thrown all the new features from Joe Danger 2 in there as well, including Pro Medals, Ghosts and hidden challenges. On top of this, the game features replays and YouTube support, the ability to edit your own levels and share them with players around the world, leaderboards and more hidden content than a jetpack-owning monkey could find!

Resistance Collection coming this Winter

Quite possibly coming as a surprise to no one, Sony has announced that the Resistance Collection will be coming this Winter. The collection will include the three main PlayStation 3 games in the series, all by Insomniac Games: Resistance: Fall of Man, Resistance 2, and Resistance 3. According to the PlayStation Blog, it will also come with “extra bonus DLC content for Resistance 2 and Resistance 3 so you can play with all of the best DLC from both games, including the Aftermath Pack and skin bundle from Resistance 2, and both the Brutality and Survival Packs from Resistance 3.” I don’t know if that means it comes with all of the available DLC or just “all of the best DLC,” whatever that is supposed to mean.

I’m actually surprised and a little disappointed that they aren’t including Resistance: Retribution in this collection. Much like the portable God of War games, I would have loved to play this PSP game on my big screen. A girl can dream, right? Speaking of dreams, here’s hoping that Resistance: Fall of Man gets trophy support in this collection. Because if not, what’s the point?

Injustice: Gods Among Us comic book incoming

The DC Universe one-on-one fighter Injustice: Gods Among Us is all set to receive a comic book based around events of the game, according to comments from NetherRealm Studios’ co-founder Ed Boon at the EB Expo in Australia.

“We’re working on an Injustice comic book to carry the story and tell the events that came before the game. With a game like Mortal Kombat, so many things spawned from there, like the movie. Obviously the extreme version is it would spawn a lot more things, but I know for sure we are making an Injustice comic.”

More things? Could he be hinting at the rumoured Justice League film as DC prepare to try and follow the success of Marvel’s The Avengers? Or is that just wishful thinking? Given DC’s excellent run of animated direct-to-DVD films, perhaps there could even be an Injustice film if fans of Batman and his brood show enough interest in the comic.

While there was no more information on the comic series, I’d expect it to emerge alongside the game in April 2013.

Retro City Rampage sets the world on fire on October 9 on PC, PS3, Vita

In a strange turn of events, Retro City Rampage – which had been slated to be released for WiiWare and Xbox Live at separate times and never made it to either – will be coming out on October 9 on PC, PS3, and Vita. Not that I’m complaining – after playing it years ago at PAX, I was bummed to find out it was coming to every console but the one I had at the time. But now, barring any additional strange barriers, hopefully the game will really be coming out next week.

Retro City Rampage was created by Brian Provinciano and has been showcased dozens of times. Its quirky backgrounds and obvious homage to the original Grand Theft Auto, coupled with its genuinely retro feel, make it a funny, entertaining game.

The game will be available for PC via Steam and GOG.com, though you can also buy it DRM-free through retrocityrampage.com and get a Steam or GOG download code as a bonus. If you’re buying it for the PSN, you will get copies for the PS3 and the Vita, which is pretty amazing. No matter how you buy it, it will cost $14.99.

The game will also be coming to the Wii Shop and Xbox Live Arcade… at some point. But for now I’m going to gorge myself on RCR on both of my Sony devices as soon as Tuesday* hits.

* Unless it gets delayed again.

The Unfinished Swan is finished, coming to PSN on October 23

The Unfinished Swan is finally ready, and will be coming to the PlayStation Network on October 23. Plus members will be able to get the game a week early on October 16. We got our first glimpses from Giant Sparrow back in 2008, and now the game is polished and ready to bring some color into your living room.

Don’t know the story behind the black and white game? Well, to start, this is what they call a first-person painter, where you throw paint in order to explore the white space around you. You play as Monroe, a boy who is chasing after a swan that has stepped out of a painting into a world that is unfinished. Check out this video over at the PlayStation Blog to see the game in action.

Curt Schilling may be forced to sell “Bloody Sock” due to 38 Studios bankruptcy

Curt Schilling lost his shirt when 38 Studios declared bankruptcy in June. Now, he might lose his sock too.

The Boston Globe is reporting that Schilling may be forced to sell the “Bloody Sock” he wore during the 2004 World Series to pay back a loan he took out to bankroll his failed game studio. The sock is currently on display at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown and is viewed by many as a symbol of Boston’s 2004 World Series win, their first in 86 years. A sports collectibles expert consulted by the Globe estimated the sock would sell for $25,000 at auction.

In addition to the famous sock, Schilling has put a cap worn by Lou Gehrig, his collection of World War II memorabilia, and his stake in the StepStone Capital Partners equity firm up as collateral.

In the months since the closure of 38 Studios, EA has expressed an interest in creating a Kingdoms of Amalur sequel without Schilling and the game’s developer has reformed as Impossible Studios.

Assassin’s Creed III Season Pass takes on Tyranny of King Washington

Assassin’s Creed III is jumping on the Season Pass bandwagon with an alternate-alternate history of the American Revolution told in three downloadable parts.

“The Tyranny of King Washington” posits what the fledgling nation of America would be like if George Washington decided that a more royal reputation was in order for the office of the President after being elected in 1789. In addition to the three episodes of “King Washington,” the Assassin’s Creed team at Ubisoft will release new multiplayer content including “new maps and characters.”

The Season Pass will be available for $29.99 (or 2400 Microsoft Points) on the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. Wii U owners will also receive access to “The Tyranny of King Washington,” but the packs will have to be purchased separately.

“History is our playground – and AC teams have always loved playing with historical facts and their consequences as a way to better understand a time period,” said Sebastien Puel, Executive Producer at Ubisoft. “While Assassin’s Creed III concentrates on history as it happens, we wanted to take some liberties with this DLC and tell you how things ‘could have happened.'”

No timetable was announced for the Assassin’s Creed III DLC, but Season Pass owners will be able to download the DLC one week before the general public.
