BloodRayne: Betrayal delayed on XBLA

Although BloodRayne: Betrayal was supposed to come out in August simultaneously on the PSN and XBLA, it looks like PSN Play has thrown a wrench in the plans. Instead of coming out at the same time, it will be released on September 6 on the PSN, and not until October 5 on XBLA. Seeing as Microsoft has long had timed exclusivities in all manner of digital releases, it’s no surprise that Sony is starting to do the same.

Two other releases in the PSN Play, Street Fighter III Third Strike Online Edition and Renegade Ops, will still be released at the same time on both download services.

Sony announces their own Summer promotion: PSN Play

The Summer of Arcade has been a great way for Microsoft to launch new games on the Xbox Live Arcade over the last three years. So Sony has decided to hold a Summer promotion of their with the similarly themed PlayStation Network Play.

The promotion will begin on August 23 with the release of Street Fighter III: Third Strike Online Edition. But PS3 owners will actually be able to “pre-order” any PSN Play pick five days before each game is released (and they’ll receive a free theme as a bonus). Like the Summer of Arcade, gamers who purchase every PSN Play offering will receive a free game. In this case, it’s Sony’s Payday: The Heist (which is scheduled for a Fall release). And that’s not all! Each game will also include exclusive DLC and PlayStation Plus subscribers will receive 20% off any of their Play purchases.

Sony has promised that the PSN Play promotion will be a yearly event, so start counting down to PSN Play 2012 now! Or get your fill of information for the 2011 lineup after the break. (more…)

Update on Doom 4… sort of

It seems that Doom 4 has been on the backburner lately with everyone’s focus on id Software’s new game coming out in October, Rage. But with Quakecon 2011 going on, people are curious about Doom 4.

Todd Hollenshead, President of id Software, had this to say: “Id Tech 5 is the basis for Doom 4, and I guess infer what you will… What we’re really focused on is getting Rage out the door. Once we’re to that point, then we want to transition to how we’re going to present Doom 4, what are the talking points, how do we introduce it. Because that stuff hasn’t even been determined yet. We’re talking about that internally.”

He added: “I know everybody’s interested. I am too.”

Huh. Thanks for the, uh… update? Hey, at least Rage looks awesome.

Ubisoft’s Driver: San Francisco looks fantastic in this new multiplayer trailer. The trailer, called “Don’t Blink and Drive,” highlights all of the multiplayer modes in the game, which will be out on September 6 for DS, PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. I can’t get that song out of my head now…

Naughty Bear: Gold Edition Review: Because Playtime Is Far From Over

It’s the summer, and you know what that means. It means it’s time for swimming, picnics, and outdoor parties. What if your friends all got invited and you didn’t? Well, there’s someone you may relate to. His name is Naughty, and he’s a little angry about a similar situation. Turn on your controller and take your aggression out on Naughty’s “friends” – because for $30, it’s easier and cheaper than winding up with a dozen lawsuits for your friends’ hospital bills. Naughty Bear: Gold Edition is a simple game, but don’t underestimate it. (more…)

Eat Sleep Play blasts Twisted Metal with a delay

David Jaffe and his cohorts at Eat Sleep Play have some bad news for you: Twisted Metal has been delayed. The development team wants more time for “tuning and polish,” so the game will now be available sometime in the first few months of 2012. Twisted Metal was previously scheduled for an October 4 release date.

Jaffe assured gamers that this delay was the right move and confirmed that attendees of PAX Prime (in Seattle) and Gamescom (in Germany) would get a chance to play Twisted Metal later this month:

It sucks bad when games miss their announced launch dates. We’re gamers too and we know how annoying it is. It’s disappointing and frustrating and it really takes the wind out of your sails if you’re a fan that has been looking forward to playing a title for a long time. Thing is, you gotta trust me when I tell you that – with this extra time for tuning and polish – the game is going to be so much better than it already is. And if you played Twisted Metal and liked it at E3 or Comic-Con, or if you get to play it (and you enjoy it) at one of the August shows, just imagine how much more fun the final game will be with some extra time, polish, and love.

He even quoted Shigeru Miyamoto’s oft-cited saying in regards to the delay: “A late game is only late until it ships. A bad game is bad until the end of time.” We’ll see, Jaffe, we’ll see.

Daily Scoop: August 5, 2011 – Mario M.D.

Whew, Friday is here! And I’ve got a three-day weekend. Today will primarily be thinking about, writing about, and reading about video games. If I’m lucky, I might even get to play some! What a novel idea…

Anyway, today’s Deal of the Day in video games over at Amazon is one that I think Ryan Littlefield will like. It’s Hori’s Nintendo DS Dragon Quest Slime Speaker Stand for $34.99! I would love to see what my cats would think about that little guy.

What else? Amazon’s offering a $50 promotional credit when you buy the Xbox 360 250GB Console with Kinect. Also worth mentioning is a current in-store deal at GameStop – buy a 320 GB PlayStation 3 Move Bundle and get two free games – selection varies by store.

Today’s Qwertee is called “Mario M.D.” and it’s a nice Mario/”House” mashup (and a repeat from a Tee Fury shirt back in January): (more…)
