Dirt 3 Review: Can You Class Up Dirty?

Codemasters has spent this entire hardware cycle delivering consistently excellent racing games – with their biggest success being the Dirt franchise. An “evolution” of the old Colin McRae Rally games, the original Dirt offered not just traditional rally racing, but numerous other disciplines of off-road racing. 2009’s Dirt 2 continued this movement away from what made the CMR games so popular… and added an unfortunate “extreme” element that was insanely out of place. The result is a series that’s commended for solid racing action, but frequently criticized for its abandonment of “serious” off-road racing. The result of these complaints is Dirt 3, which can best be explained as a “happy medium” between the seriousness of Dirt and the insanity of Dirt 2. In short, if Dirt 2’s craziness was a serious turn-off, Dirt 3 is a heartfelt apology. (more…)

Steven Stamkos skates onto NHL 12 cover

After holding a massive multi-week tournament to decide the Madden NFL 12 cover athlete, EA Sports has used the 2011 NHL Awards to announce the spokesman for NHL 12.

EA has chosen Steven Stamkos of the Tampa Bay Lightning, who lost to the Boston Bruins in seven games in the Eastern Conference Finals, as this year’s cover athlete. The 21-year old was a finalist for the Ted Lindsay Award (Stamkos lost to Daniel Sedin of the Vancouver Canucks) and he sounds very excited about his selection:

“I’ve grown up playing EA Sports NHL video games so it’s an honor to be chosen for the cover this year,” said Stamkos. “I love how authentic the game is and thought it was great when I scored a one-knee, one-timer goal as myself in NHL 12!”

NHL 12 will be available for the PS3 and Xbox 360 this September.

L.A. Noire coming to PC; 4 million copies sold on PS3, Xbox 360

Media trends come in waves and with zombies shambling off into the sunset and vampires returning to their coffins, maybe its time for the heyday of the 1940s gumshoe because Rockstar is reporting that L.A. Noire has sold 4 million copies worldwide on the PS3 and Xbox 360.

This tremendous debut is obviously swell news for the publisher and developer Team Bondi, but PC gamers will also be making whoopee this Fall when the game comes to the PC as well. Developed by Rockstar Leeds, the PC version will include customizable control options and 3D graphics support.

“L.A. Noire is a new type of game that makes players see through a detective’s eyes in 1940s Los Angeles,” said Sam Houser, founder of Rockstar Games. “Its unique blend of story, action and crime solving will be perfect to play on PC.”

And let us clue you in, L.A. Noire is no jalopy, it’s one of the best games of the year.

Sonic Generations demo on PSN, XBLM now

Sega’s latest stab at bringing Sonic the Hedgehog into the 21st century, Sonic Generations, will be released on the PS3 and Xbox 360 this Fall (a 3DS version is planned as well). But if you want to step into the blue blur’s sneakers a might early, Sega has you covered.

Starting today, Sega has added a demo of Sonic Generations to the Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Network. The XBLM version is available to download right now (for Gold members only) while PS3 owners will have to wait until later today to download it. You better too, for some ridiculous reason, the demo will expire 20 days from now.

The Sonic Generations demo includes the 2D version (playable with Classic Sonic) of the Green Hill Zone level. It looks like Sega is keeping the 3D recreation of the classic Sonic stage under wraps for now.

BioShock Infinite and Uncharted 3 lead Game Critics Awards Best of E3 2011 nominees

Game Critics Awards have announced the nominees for E3 2011 and while none of them are surprising, it does give a glimpse of what the biggest games are going to be in the coming year.

BioShock Infinite and Uncharted 3 lead the pack with four nominations a piece, while fan favorites like Battlefield 3 and Batman: Arkham City sit among the next tier with three nominations each. As far as publishers go, Electronic Arts and Sony Computer Entertainment lead the industry with a commendable fourteen nominations each, while the Xbox 360 holds the most nominations on a platform, with a whopping 55 total. Ironically, the PlayStation Vita debuted with seven, while the well-established Wii only garnered two, down twelve from last year’s awards.
