The Video Game Canon – Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

Dig deeper into the Video Game Canon with a look at the creation of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and the massive growth of the Call of Duty franchise. Here’s a teaser…

General William Tecumseh Sherman famously declared that “War is Hell” in a speech in 1880, though I think it’s safe to assume that more people are familiar with the anti-war protestations of a certain green Muppet from 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back. While this sentiment has existed in the public consciousness for hundreds of years, the basic structure of a game as a confrontation that pits the player against the CPU (or another player) makes armed conflict an ideal setting.

War might be Hell, but it has also been very good for Activision’s bottom line thanks to the Call of Duty franchise.

Electronic Arts reiterates that Battlefield V and Anthem are coming in 2018

UPDATE: EA has announced that “Battlefield 6” will officially be known as Battlefield V.

ORIGINAL STORY: Electronic Arts delivered their quarterly financial report to investors last night, and Chief Financial Officer Blake Jorgensen delivered some (not unexpected) news about the publisher’s 2018 slate of games.

Jorgensen reiterated that the currently untitled Battlefield 6 will be released in 2018, alongside a “full slate” of EA Sports titles (presumably FIFA 19, Madden NFL 19, NHL 19, and NBA Live 19), and BioWare’s Anthem. It looks like multiple in-game events for Star Wars: Battlefront II are also on tap for next year:

The core of our fiscal 2019 is in a full slate of sports titles and their associated live services, plus new live services from Star Wars: Battlefront II. We will add the next Battlefield game and moved into the action genre with Anthem. We expect our subscriber base to continue to grow and our new mobile titles to benefit from players looking for deeper experiences with higher production values.

Later in the presentation, CEO Andrew Wilson added that EA Sports is planning something connected to next year’s World Cup:

On World Cup, we don’t have any news to announce right now, but at EA Sports we have a long tradition of celebrating the World Cup and bringing it to life for fans, stretching back to the World Cup 1998. So as it gets closer, the world’s largest sporting event, we’ll announce more details on how we’ll continue this tradition.

Electronic Arts’s stock is down more than 4% in trading on the stock market so far today.

Call of Duty: WWII, Dot Hack G.U.: Last Recode, Spintires: MudRunner, more added to PS Store

Prepare to go to war in this week’s PlayStation Store update.

PS4 owners will also be able to download Dot Hack G.U.: Last Recode, an enhanced re-release of the entire Dot Hack G.U. trilogy. A different kind of war will take place in Spintires: MudRunner, as PS4 players will get in a truck and fight it out with the muck underneath their wheels.

And finally, retro game fans will be able to download 8-Bit Adventure Anthology: Volume 1 for the PS4, which includes three classic point and click adventures (Shadowgate, The Uninvited, and Deja Vu).

The Last of Us Part II’s new trailer is absolutely brutal

Sony gave us another at The Last of Us Part II during their Paris Games Week presentation today, and it is just absolutely brutal. Multiple people are killed by a hammer, a woman is strung up from a tree with a noose, a poor guy gets an arrow through the throat… and that’s before the zombies show up.

Thankfully, Joel and Ellie are no where to be seen. And that’s by design. According to a post by Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann on the PlayStation Blog, this trailer is meant to introduce fans to some of the new characters in The Last of Us Part II:

At its core, The Last of Us is still very much about Ellie and Joel, but for this reveal, we wanted to showcase several new characters that are integral to their next journey. We’re sure you have many questions after watching this scene. We’re also pretty sure that we’re going to see all sorts of theories about whom these characters are, where and when this scene takes place, and how all of this fits into Ellie and Joel’s next story. For now we’re keeping mum, but we’re excited to see what y’all make of this piece of the puzzle.

The Last of Us Part II still doesn’t have a release date, but Druckmann had more to say in a new video interview. You can find it after the break. (more…)
