Nintendo sells TEN MILLION Switch consoles in first nine months

The Switch has clearly exceeded Nintendo’s wildest expectations, and today the consolemaker confirmed that notion with some official sales numbers. According to Nintendo’s internal tracking, ten million Switch consoles have been sold since its launch on March 3.

“As you can see in people’s living rooms, on a plane or riding the subway, fans all over the world can enjoy playing Nintendo Switch wherever they go,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s President and COO. “The response from fans has been great, and we’re doing our very best to satisfy demand during the holiday shopping season.”

In case you were curious, the Switch’s sales success is currently blowing away both the Wii U and the Wii. Nintendo sold 3.61 million Wii U consoles and 9.27 million Wii consoles in each console’s first nine months after launch. The Wii U’s userbase would eventually stall out at 13.56 million consoles sold last year, but Nintendo managed to sell 101.63 million Wii consoles over the system’s lifespan.

But if the Switch keeps up its current pace, it’ll eventually become the best-selling Nintendo console ever.

Nintendo will re-release Wii and GameCube titles for Nvidia Shield in China

Nintendo began working with Nvidia several years ago, when the consolemaker was looking for a company to provide a graphical kick for their “NX” concept. In time, the NX would be revealed as the Nintendo Switch, and Nvidia confirmed the console would be powered by its popular Tegra chip. Today, Nintendo returned the favor in a surprising announcement to come out of China.

Speaking to Engadget, Nvidia has revealed that Nintendo will release remastered versions of New Super Mario Bros. Wii, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, and Punch-Out!! for the Nvidia Shield microconsole in China. Other games from Nintendo’s GameCube and Wii catalogs will be released for the Shield in the future… including Super Mario Galaxy.

Extending the business relationship that brought Nvidia technology to Nintendo Switch, some of Nintendo’s most beloved Wii and Nintendo GameCube titles are officially headed to China for the first time. New Super Mario Bros. Wii, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Punch-Out!! are remastered in 1080p and available on the China version of Nvidia Shield, released today.

Because the Shield is so similar to the Switch, this deal might give us a window into Nintendo plans for its back catalog on the Switch. But that’s conversation for another time.
