Journey, The Walking Dead clean up at 2013 DICE Awards

A pair of downloadable games came away with almost half of all the awards handed out at last night’s D.I.C.E. Awards show. Journey, developed by thatgamecompany exclusively for the PS3, was the big winner of the night, nabbing eight awards including Game of the Year. Telltale’s The Walking Dead was also a multiple award winner, collecting four trophies.
Halo 4 (Visual Engineering and Connectivity) and XCOM: Enemy Unknown (Gameplay Engineering and Strategy/Simulation) were the only other games to win in more than one category.

PSN Today: Dead Space 3, Sly Cooper 4, Fist of the North Star: Ken’s Rage 2, more

You’re not scared of this week’s PlayStation Store update are you? Maybe you should be as EA has added Dead Space 3 to the PS3 Full Games section.
If battling Necromorphs on an ice planet isn’t your thing, there’s always the cartoony capers of Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time and Bentley’s Hackpack. The fourth Sly Cooper game is available for the PS3 and Vita in a Cross-Buy “buy one, get both” edition and as a cheaper Vita-only release. Bentley’s Hackpack is a bite-sized collection of hacking minigames that is also a part of the Cross-Buy promotion.

Ravens win as Madden Super Bowl Simulation is scary accurate this year

EA Sports’ Madden NFL Super Bowl Simulation is always pretty close to the final result, but this year’s prediction was so scarily accurate that some might be wondering if the fix was in. As prognasticated by Madden NFL 13, Super Bowl XLVII ended with a Baltmore Ravens victory over the San Francisco 49ers. But the simulation also accurately served up a wide variety of indiviudal moments from the game:
- The 49ers were held to a field goal in the first quarter.
- Joe Flacco threw a touchdown pass to Anquan Boldin.
- The Ravens put the game away with a Justin Tucker field goal.
- The margin of victory was three points (34-31 in real life versus 27-24 in the simulation)
- Joe Flacco was named the Super Bowl MVP.
But of course, no simulation could have predicted the 34-minute blackout that overtook the game or that the Star Trek Into Darkness trailer would be super good (Benedict Cumberbatch just needs to be in every movie… ever). With this correct prediction, the Madden Super Bowl Simulation improves to 8-2 since EA Sports began making picks in 2004.
New Releases: Dead Space 3, Sly Cooper 4, Fire Emblem: Awakening, More

This week’s biggest new release is the return of Isaac Clarke in Dead Space 3. Everyone’s favorite alien-hunting engineer (wait, was Ripley an engineer?) has help this time in the form of the appropriately named John Carver. Go grab a buddy for co-op and check out Dead Space 3 this week on the PC, PS3, or Xbox 360.
Also available this week is Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time returns in a new adventure available simultaneously for the PS3 and Vita. But remember, if you buy the PS3 version, you’ll get the Vita version for free as part of Sony’s Cross-Buy promotion.
Namco Bandai will be bringing Fist of the North Star: Ken’s Rage 2 to the PS3, Wii U, and Xbox 360 this week in a unique way. The Xbox 360 version will be available on store shelves as a disc-based game while the PS3 and Wii U versions will be released exclusively as digital downloads.
And speaking of digital downloads, you can obtain the 3DS strategy game Fire Emblem: Awakening on Monday as a download from the 3DS eShop or in stores.

Killzone: Mercenary invades PS Vita on September 17th
If there’s anything the PlayStation Vita could stand to benefit from, it’s more games. So it warms this gamer’s heart to get a set release date for one of the platform’s flagship franchises. That’s right, FPSers, Killzone: Mercenary officially hits stores on September 17th.
Killzone: Mercenary is a new first-person shooter in the Killzone series, developed specifically for the PlayStation Vita platform and powered by the stunning Killzone engine. Starting just after the ending of the original Killzone, and revisiting many of the events from the Killzone trilogy, the game puts players in the rugged combat boots of a mercenary named Arran Danner. Danner is a former UCA-soldier who has no qualms about taking on paid contracts from the ISA as well as the Helghast.
But don’t go thinking you’ll have to wait seven excruciating months before seeing anything on the game. Sony also graciously provided a new trailer and some screenshots for game:
More details are available at the PlayStation Blog.

Sony is revealing “the future” of PlayStation on February 20
Sony is no stranger to the practice of teasing gamers with a fancy trailer and promises of a big announcement only to reveal another trailer (in fact, they did it yesterday). But the consolemaker has announced that their next big announcement will be revealed to the world on February 20 at 6 PM (Eastern Time). The teaser trailer above, dubbed “See the future,” includes a lot of pretty colors and four familiar shapes (a Circle, a Triangle, an X, and an O).
So what future should we be on the lookout for, Sony? Is it the PlayStation 4/Orbis? A Vita refresh? A new entry in a long-running series for the PS3?
Or is it just another stupid commercial for a commercial? As they say, “once burned, twice shy,” so you’ll forgive me if I’m not jumping up and down over yet another teaser trailer… yet.

PSN Today: Crysis 3 beta, GTA Vice City, Hitman HD Trilogy, more

It’s another big week for the PlayStation Store as Sony and Electronic Arts have added a Crysis 3 open beta to the PSN. The beta is available to download for free by all PS3 owners from now until February 12. The digital download version can also now be pre-ordered through the PS Store, so you can be sure you’ve got it first thing on February 19.
Also available this week is Square Enix’s Hitman HD Trilogy. The up-rezzed versions of Agent 47’s second, third, and fourth games are available as separate PSN downloads or as one combined bundle.
Going back in time a bit, this week also sees the addition of a trio of games that were previously available as disc-only releases including Platinum’s Bayonetta, Konami’s Zone of the Enders HD Collection, and Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (that one’s a PS2 Classic).
There’s even that’s new to the PlayStation Store this week. You can read all about them after the break. And don’t forget to visit the PlayStation Blog for a list of this week’s new game add-ons. (more…)
