New Releases: Vita, Syndicate, Asura’s Wrath, More

After a special pre-launch launch last week, Sony is ready to officially launch their next handheld, the Vita, in two different packages: The $249.99 Wi-Fi Edition and the $299.99 3G/Wi-Fi Edition. A handful of additional launch titles will follow it into stores this week including Army Corps of Hell, Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus, and Touch My Katamari.
If you prefer to play on a full-size console, there are several other big releases this week including Starbreeze’s first-person shooter reboot of Syndicate (PC, PS3, Xbox 360) and Capcom’s crazy brawler, Asura’s Wrath (PS3, Xbox 360).
Finally, Konami plans to release Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D on that other handheld device (the 3DS).
You can check out the full list of the rest of this week’s new releases after the break. (more…)
The Vita has arrived in this week’s PSN update
With the Vita First Edition Bundle now available in stores, Sony has flooded the PlayStation Network with games and content for the handheld system.
A total of sixteen Vita games are now available for your playing pleasure including Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Lumines: Elecronic Symphony, Wipeout 2048, and many, many more. PlayStation Store exlcusives Escape Plan and Super Stardust Delta are also now available to download.
But don’t think Sony has forgotten the PS3 (or PSP) just because the Vita is vying for your affection. A Move-compatible version of The House of The Dead III and Worms: Ultimate Mayhem can be had for your PS3 while Hakuoki: Demon of The Fleeting Blossom is available for the PSP.
And let’s not forget that demos for Mass Effect 3 and Binary Domain can be downloaded today as well.
Wow. You can check out all the games available in this week’s update after the break and for a full list of all of this week’s new game add-ons, I refer you to the PlayStation Blog. (more…)

“Bad Box Art” Mega Man, Pac-Man added to Street Fighter X Tekken
Ridiculous? Or genius? I can’t decide…
Capcom and Sony are definitely pulling out all the stops to ensure the PS3/Vita version of Street Fighter X Tekken is the one to get. You can check out all the insanity in the trailer above, but Pac-Man (riding the wooden fighting dummy, Mokujin) and Mega Man (in his Mega Man 1 “bad box art” costume) will be joining the fight.
Pac-Man and Mega Man join the previously announced PS3/Vita exclusive characters Cole (from InFamous) and the Sony Cats (Kuro and Toro).
So what’s the verdict? Ridiculous? Or genius? Street Fighter X Tekken will be available for the PS3 and Vita (and PC and Xbox 360) on March 6.

March is Silent Hill month thanks to Book of Memories, HD Collection, Downpour delays
With three Silent Hill games on the schedule (one for each month), Konami had previously planned to keep gamers in the state of perpetual panic throughout the new year. But several delays have now condensed a season of scares into one monstrous month.
Silent Hill HD Collection will bow first on March 6. The PS3 and Xbox 360 package will collect Silent Hill 2 (considered by many to be the best game in the series) and Silent Hill 3 into a single package. The compilation will include new vocal performances and updated high definition graphics.
Silent Hill: Downpour, also in the works for the PS3 and Xbox 360, will follow the HD Collection into stores a week later on March 13. Developed by Vatra Games (their first in the Silent Hill series), Downpour is a twist on The Fugitive formula as convicted felon Murphy Pendleton escapes a prison bus crash outside a familiarly foggy burg.
Finally, the series will make its debut on Sony’s new Vita handheld on March 27 with Silent Hill: Book of Memories. Book of Memories introduces time travel to the Silent Hill universe and also includes another first, a multiplayer mode.

The Official Mega-Super-Awesome Video Game Release Calendar for 2012

Dick Clark is in Times Square and the big ball will drop in less than 36 hours. That’s right folks, 2011 is coming to an end. But all that means is that 2012 is (quite literally) right around the corner. And with it comes a huge new year of gaming. In 2012, we’ll witness the launch of the PlayStation Vita and Nintendo Wii U. We’ll also welcome back the bullet-time action of Max Payne, the knee-cracking excitement of NFL Blitz, and a rousing return to the world of BioShock. There’s also the tomb raiding rebirth of Lara Croft, another count of Grand Theft Auto, the first Kid Icarus game in over two decades, and the gravity-defying feats of Inversion.
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Here’s what else we’ll be playing in 2012 (Did we miss any? Let us know in the comments)… (more…)
New IPs to Play Before the End of Days

The Mayans and film director Roland Emmerich would have us believe that the end of the world is nigh. Really nigh. Knee nigh almost. But despite the warnings, it seems most game designers shirked off the warning that was Emmerich’s masterpiece 2012 and decided to roll out the same old stuff. We have Final Fantasy XIII-2, Guild Wars 2, Borderlands 2, Darksiders II, The Darkness II, Mass Effect 3, Max Payne 3, Soul Calibur V, and Street Fighter X Tekken (I know the X doesn’t equal 10, but it might at well). I am sure some of these games will be amazing (and I have my £40 saved for Borderlands 2 already), but if it really, truly is the end of life, the universe and my games consoles, then is it too much to ask to play something new before we’re all burned, drowned, stabbed or frozen to death (depending on which mood Emmerich is in) instead of say, another instalment of Call of Duty or, hypothetically, taking an isometric political espionage strategy game from 1993 and turning it into yet another First Person Shooter?
Thankfully no. (more…)

Confirmed: Wii U, new Vita games to appear at CES 2012
CNET has begun their Consumer Electronics Show coverage with a report detailing two supposed (and very surprising) game-related additions to the show floor.
According to CNET, CES 2012 (which will be held in Las Vegas from January 10-13) will include an appearance by the Wii U and multiple “new” Vita games.
Nintendo and Sony Computer Entertainment have typically shied away from attending CES, and a quick check of the Exhibitor Directory came up empty for both consolemakers. So it seems unlikely they’ll make an appearance at this year’s show as well.
I’d love to learn more about the Wii U in a few weeks, but it looks like this news is still a rumor for now.
UPDATE: Speaking to Joystiq, Nintendo confirmed that the Wii U will appear at CES 2012 in a special showing hosted by CES management:
Nintendo of America, working with the 2012 International CES management, will offer demos of the upcoming Wii U console to members of the media who did not see the system at the 2011 E3 Expo. Nintendo will not have a booth at CES, nor does it plan to include any games, experiences or information beyond what was available at the 2011 E3 Expo.
