PS Store Today: Alien: Isolation, NBA 2K15, DriveClub, Vib-Ribbon, more

The Fall gaming avalanche comes to the PlayStation Store this week. Some of the biggest games of the season are now available to download on the PS3, PS4, and Vita as well as a bona-fide classic, and a handful of smaller titles as well.
A trio of AAA release are now available as of today. Alien: Isolation (PS3, PS4) is Sega and Creative Assembly’s attempt to bring the “haunted house in space” atmosphere of 1979’s Alien to the video game realm. It’s joined by DriveClub, Evolution’s ambitious PS4 racer, and NBA 2K15 (PS3, PS4), the latest game in 2K’s long-running sports simulation series.
Even though all these new titles are now available to download, today’s real surprise if the release of Vib-Ribbon, a PSone Classic that was originally only available in Japan and Europe. Vib-Ribbon is a rhythm game from the creator of PaRappa the Rapper that uses a unique line-drawing art style. It has appeared on multiple “Best of” lists and is considered by many to be one of the best games never to come to America. Thankfully, that changes today.
Finally this week, a few indie games that are definitely worth a look have popped up on the PlayStation Store. Dust: An Elysian Tail, a side-scrolling action-RPG that was originally released for the Xbox 360 in 2012, is now available on the PS4. Dust’s hand-drawn artwork would serve as a nice complement to Spelunky, which has also been released for the PS4 today. Divekick, a rather unique fighting game (“First You Dive, Then You Kick!”), rounds out this week’s batch of indie PS4 ports.
A complete look at all of this week’s new releases (including a few additional titles) can be found after the break. And a full rundown of this week’s new game add-ons can be found at the PlayStation Blog. (more…)

Skullgirls Encore pushed back to early 2015 on PS4, Vita
Lab Zero Games has announced (via the PlayStation Blog) that the PS4/Vita launch of Skullgirls Encore, which was expected to be released by the end of this year, has been pushed back to early 2015. Lab Zero’s Peter Bartholow said that the reason for the delay is to pack as much new content into the port as possible: “[W]e’ve expanded the scope of the port and are adding new features with the aim of making it a better upgrade for fans and a better value for everyone.”
Lab Zero has posted a few work-in-progress screenshots of the PS4 version on their official website.
But, if you already own the PS3 version of Skullgirls Encore, Lab Zero does have a surprise for you… the third DLC character, Eliza, is now available. Eliza is an Egyptian “diva” who “constantly [shape-shifts] into a variety of Egyptian mythological symbols and cultural icons.” Lab Zero considers her Story Mode especially deep and promises that it will shed a lot of light on the lore and inner workings of the Skullgirls universe.

Kevin Smith will play himself in Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham

Professional fanboy Kevin Smith will get a chance to act alongside some of his favorite comic book characters next month when he gets Lego-ized for Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham. Smith will play himself alongside several other new characters announced by WB Games including Bruce Wayne (who is separate from Batman but still voiced by Tory Baker), Green Arrow (voiced by Arrow star Stephen Amell), and DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns (voiced by the actual Geoff Johns). All four characters will be playable, so if you’ve ever wanted to recreate the “Fly, fatass, fly!” scene from Mallrats, now’s your chance.
Smith, Johns, Baker, and Amell will team-up to host a Lego Batman 3 panel at the New York Comic-Con on Saturday, October 11. The quartet (along with TT Games developers Arthur Parsons and Stephen Sharples) will reveal new characters and introduce brand-new gameplay videos of the game during their talk. And in case you miss the panel, WB Games will have a playable demo of Lego Batman 3 available at the DC Entertainment booth.
Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham will be released for the 3DS, PC, PS3 PS4, Vita, Wii U, Xbox 360, and Xbox One on November 11.

New Releases: Super Smash Bros. 3DS, Shadow of Mordor, Forza Horizon 2, More

Phase Two of Nintendo’s plan to dominate the Fall gaming season kicks off this week as Super Smash Bros. For 3DS, the first Smash Bros. game for a handheld system, will be available on Friday, October 3. New friends (Little Mac! The Duck Hunt Dog! Miis! Mega Man! Pac-Man!) and old favorites (Mario! Link! Samus!) give it one of the deepest rosters the franchise has ever seen, making Super Smash Bros. For 3DS even more of a must have.
Also available this week is WB Games’ latest foray into the Lords of the Rings universe, Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor (PC, PS4, Xbox One). Set between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, Shadow of Mordor will tell a brand new tale within the franchise with assistance from Peter Jackson, J.R.R. Tolkien Enterprises, and the writer of Red Dead Redemption. Less epic (but still pretty epic) is Microsoft’s newest racing game, Forza Horizon 2, which will be released for the Xbox One and Xbox 360.
Finally this week, Atlus is going back to the arena to bring PS3 and Xbox 360 owners Persona 4 Arena Ultimax. Fight!

The Walking Dead Season 2: Amid the Ruins Review: The Dark Before the Dawn

In the television world, the finale is perhaps the most important episode of the season. It needs to be exciting and emotional. It needs to provide closure, while at the same time end on a cliffhanger and leave unanswered questions. How else could we remain interested in the show during that excruciating, seven-month wait until the next season? This rings true for the current season of The Walking Dead TV series. Rick and the gang are once again in a dire situation, and we don’t know what’s going to happen next. What happened to Beth? What do the residents of Terminus want? Will we riot if Daryl dies? See, now I’m getting anxious just talking about it. OK, back on track.
In order for the season finale to pack a punch, you need the prior episode to provide a good set up – which usually means a duller entry. This is not bad; it just slows down the momentum a bit. But it is necessary in order to make the finale that much stronger. A calm before the storm, if you will. Ergo, Season 2 of the The Walking Dead video game is no different from its television counterpart. As we draw ever closer to the conclusion of the season, we need to have the penultimate preparation episode – as we get ready for the end. Episode 4 follows this same mantra, giving us a notably slower episode, but still enjoyable in its own right. (more…)
Sony sets PlayStation TV, their Vita set-top box, for release on October 14

Sony has announced that their Vita set-top box, the PlayStation TV, will be released on October 14. The mini-console will be available by itself (for $99.99) and as a special bundle that includes a DualShock 3 controller, an 8GB Memory Card, and a copy of The Lego Movie ($139.99). And if you’re a regular Walmart shopper, you might like to know that the retailer will be carrying a special edition of the PlayStation TV bundle that also includes a copy of Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time.
According to Sony, the PlayStation TV includes the ability to play more than 700 games from a wide variety of PlayStation consoles. In addition to the vast majority of Vita games (which can be downloaded from the PlayStation Store or inserted into the Vita game slot), the mini-console can also play downloaded PSone and PSP Classics as well as PS3 games through the PlayStation Now streaming service. And just like a Vita, the PlayStation TV also supports PS4 Remote Play.
The complete list of every PlayStation TV-compatible title can be found at PlayStation.com.
