GTA5 is “Game of the Year” at the 2013 VGX Awards

The first ever VGX Awards (formerly known as the Spike TV Video Game Awards) were held last night and the best games of 2013 were once again crowned by GameTrailers.com’s Geoff Keighley (with an assist from Community‘s Joel McHale). The general consensus among the Internetatti is that the show still doesn’t know what it wants to be and that the “intimate studio setting” (and McHale) made the whole thing feel a bit bizarre. But what about the award winners?
In what is sure to be the first of many, Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V was named “Game of the Year” by the VGX Advisory Council. Rockstar’s crime saga also took home “Best Soundtrack.” But, the developer missed out on “Studio of the Year” honors. That award went to Naughty Dog for their work on The Last of Us. Their apocalyptic story was also awarded “Best PlayStation Game.” “Best Voice Actor” (Troy Baker), and “Best Voice Actress” (Ashley Johnson). Other multiple award winners include indie sensation Gone Home (“Best PC Game” and “Best Independent Game”) and BioShock Infinite (“Best Shooter” and “Best Song in a Game”).
A complete list of this year’s winners, including the remaining genre awards, “Best Xbox Game” (the surprising Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons), and “Best Nintendo Game” (Super Mario 3D World), can be found after the break. (more…)

Do you love retro games? Then you should definitely check out this week’s Nintendo Download.
Sega has added two more games to their 3D Classics collection: 3D Sonic the Hedgehog and 3D Altered Beast. Nintendo got in on the 3DS retro act as well with Donkey Kong 3. Finally, Konami brought the Super NES favorite The Legend of The Mystical Ninja to the Wii U eShop.
More information on all of these games (as well as Brilliant Hamsters! (3DS), Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 (3DS), and Hooked on Bass Fishing (DSi)) can be found after the break. (more…)

Nintendo Download: Sega 3D Classics, Contra III, Ninja Gaiden III, more
Nintendo rests for no holiday and this week’s Nintendo Download gives us plenty to be thankful. Especially if you’re a fan of retro games.
The Wii U eShop is now home to Contra III: The Alien Wars, the NES update to everyone’s favorite side-scrolling shooter. And over on the 3DS eShop, gamers on the go can now download Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom, my favorite of the NES Ninja Gaidens. 3DS owners will also be able to download the first of Sega’s 3D Classics today as 3D Space Harrier and 3D Super Hang-On are both now available through the eShop.
Also available this week is Nintendo’s interactive Lourve app, Nintendo 3DS Guide: Louvre, Young Justice: Legacy, and a few more games you can read about after the break. (more…)

Shovel Knight will break ground in 2014

I am very thankful for Shovel Knight, the upcoming NES-styled platformer from Yacht Club Games. You might even say (bad pun incoming) that I dug the time I got to spend with the game at this year’s PAX East expo. But sadly, it looks like the game’s release (on the PC, Wii U, and 3DS) has been pushed into 2014.
Yacht Club’s Sean Velasco has informed us that Shovel Knight will definitely be released in 2014. While he couldn’t pinpoint an exact release date, the development team is hoping to release their first game in the Winter months.
Winter… snow… Shovel Knight. It all makes perfect sense to me.

Operation Dead Angels launches “Bayonetta on Wii U” campaign

With Bayonetta 2 soon to be shooting and slicing its way onto the Wii U with a sexy smile, many have been wondering if the 2010 original would find its way onto Nintendo’s new platform. After a teasing tweet from Platinum Games’ Hideki Kamiya suggesting he could port the original to the Wii U before the sequel’s release…
We can. RT @lightningboltac If Nintendo decided to release Bayo1 on WiiU, will u be able to port it in time before Bayo2's release? Or later
— 神谷英樹 Hideki Kamiya (@PG_kamiya) November 22, 2013
…the Internet has done what it does best, created an online petition to demand something.
The group behind the “Bayonetta on Wii U” campaign is known as Operation Dead Angels. Originally released on both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 to rave reviews, unfortunately, they did not translate into amazing sales figures. Kamiya has said in the past that if Nintendo had not acquired the rights to publish the sequel, it never would have seen the light of day.
It makes sense for all parties involved to release the original on the Wii U. For one, it will give Wii U fans a better sense of continuity for the sequel. But also, it will allow gamers a chance to revisit what should have been a better selling title, much in the same way Capcom’s Okami found new life on the Wii and PlayStation 3 after its original PlayStation 2 debut.
So if you want to see Bayonetta’s first outing on the Wii U GamePad, join up with Operation Dead Angels and start hounding Nintendo’s various Twitter accounts today!

Lego The Hobbit announced for Spring 2014 release

You didn’t think WB Games and TT Games were going to stop making Lego games did you? The publisher and developer announced the latest Lego adaptation, Lego The Hobbit, today. Based on the first two movies in Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy, the game will is in development for the 3DS, PC (and Mac), PS3, PS4, Vita, Wii U, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
In Lego The Hobbit, players will go on a quest with Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf the Grey, Thorin Oakenshield, and many others as they travel to the Dwarven Kingdom of Erebor. Those many others will include all of the Dwarves (Thorin, Fíli, Kíli, Óin, Glóin, Dwalin, Balin Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, Dori, Nori and Ori), each of which has their own special ability.
“We are thrilled to depict the characters and environments of Peter Jackson’s Middle-Earth in Lego form with the Lego The Hobbit video game,” said Tom Stone, Managing Director, TT Games. “Our family-friendly take on these thrilling adventures will have kids and parents playing and laughing together as they build and explore in Lego Middle-Earth.”
Lego The Hobbit will be released Spring 2014, probably just in time for Blu-ray/DVD release of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.
Nintendo Download: Super Mario 3D World, Zelda: Link Between Worlds, more

The big is almost here! In fact, we’re just one day away! I refer, of course, to the launch of Super Mario 3D World and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds.
What did you think I was talking about?
Anyway, new entries in Nintendo’s biggest franchises will be available in stores tomorrow and digital download versions will land on, respectively, the Wii U eShop and 3DS eShop at the same time. The two massive games will also be joined by Mario Party: Island Tour, the first Mario Party game for the 3DS.
If you’re looking for a new game that’s available today, Wii U owners will also get the chance to download Edge, retro-style platformer, and Coaster Crazy Deluxe, a new coaster sim from the creators of RollerCoaster Tycoon 3.
More information on all of these games (and almost a dozen more) can be found after the break. (more…)
