Game over man… Sega cancels Aliens: Colonial Marines for Wii U

alienscolonialmarines-header

The final chapter of the sad story of Aliens: Colonial Marines has now been written as Sega has officially canceled the Wii U version of the game. The game was originally expected to be released as part of the Wii U’s launch window, but that deadline came and went last week without any word from Sega or developer Gearbox Software.

But that all changed today. Speaking to Joystiq, a Sega representative said: “Sega can confirm that the Wii U SKU of Aliens: Colonial Marines is no longer in development.”

I guess you could say Sega nuked it from orbit… since its mandatory I use that line in any Aliens: Colonial Marines story.

injustice-header

Injustice: Gods Among Us is less than two weeks away from its PS3/Xbox 360/Wii U debut, but if you’re a mobile gamer, don’t worry, NetherRealm Studios hasn’t forgotten about you. The Mortal Kombat maker has announced that a slightly different version of Injustice is now available for download from the iOS App Store.

Playable on the iPad and iPhone/iPod Touch, this version of Injustice is a free-to-play title that adds a unique collectible card mechanic to the gameplay. Players will engage in 3-on-3 battles and use a variety of support cards to control the outcome of the fight. Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Joker, Lex Luthor, and many others will appear in the iOS version of Injustice, which will also link up with its console counterpart to unlock special in-game content. Owners of the console version will also be able to unlock special content in the iOS edition.

“The team at NeatherRealm Studios created a custom mobile experience for Injustice: Gods Among Us on the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch that delivers gameplay mechanics created specifically for the platform,” said Ed Boon, the Creative Director at NetherRealm Studios. “We’re excited to offer fans a new way to play fighting games that can be enjoyed alone or as a companion experience to the console versions.”

Injustice: Gods Among Us will be released for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 on April 19. A trailer for the iOS edition can be found after the break. (more…)

Watch Dogs PAX East Impressions: Hack the Planet, or Maybe Just Chicago

watchdogs-header

Ubisoft didn’t have Watch Dogs playable on the show floor at PAX East, but the game still had an enormous presence. The publisher showed a special behind-closed-doors presentation of the game, which included a special Watch Dogs lanyard as a giveaway (and if you were wearing it on the show floor, you may have gotten a surprise visit from a Frag Doll with a free t-shirt). I would have much preferred being able to play the game myself, but what I saw on the screen was a somewhat impressive, if disappointingly short, display of the capabilities of main character Aiden Pearce. Shovel Knight Hands-On Preview: I’m Diggin’ It

shovelknight-header

Being in the vicinity of Shovel Knight, the first project from Yacht Club Games, seems to make horrible puns just emerge from the ether. During my PAX East playtime, a nearby developer assured me that while the current build was only ten percent complete, the team was beginning to “dig in” towards the game’s full potential. The developer actually hadn’t realized the double meaning of his words until someone else pointed them out to him. He apologized for the terrible wordplay and admitted that it had been happening all morning.

But a game like Shovel Knight requires this kind of pun-tastic sense of humor. (more…)

Shovel Knight Interview: Sailing the PAX East Seas With Sean Velasco

shovelknight-header

Sean Velasco knows retro games. As the former Director of WayForward Technologies, he was the driving force behind Contra 4, A Boy and His Blob, and Double Dragon: Neon. And as the “Captain” of Yacht Club Games, Velasco is sailing off into the uncharted waters of an original property, Shovel Knight.

You can read all about Shovel Knight in our PAX East playthrough, which will be posted later today (UPDATE: Here it is!). But for now, let Captain Velasco guide you through his love of classic games, his thoughts on Kickstarter, Shovel Knight’s future, and the possibility of a PSN/XBLA version of the game. (more…)

April system update cuts Wii U Menu loading time by 67%

The system software that powers the Wii U is about to get a whole lot faster. Nintendo has released a video showing the huge difference in load times between the current system software and the new update.

Starting from within a Wii U game or application and jumping back to the Wii U Menu currently takes about 30 seconds. But after the April system update, this action will be cut to 10 seconds. That’s a 67% decrease in the amount of time Wii U owners will be looking at a loading screen. Hurray!

I wonder how that compares to the PS3 and Xbox 360?

The PAXpocalypse List: The Best of PAX East 2013

paxeast2013-best-header

We don’t have the PAX pox, but what if the entire convention center was put under quarantine because of some mystery illness? What would you do? What would you see? We’d endure the PAXpocalypse by spending all of our time with the 13 games (nine playable, three developer-guided demos, and one board game) below. Though it would have to be after pushing the hordes of undead off our doorstep. Because any pox affecting PAXgoers would almost certainly have to lead to a zombie uprising. (more…)
