Nintendo Download: Art Academy Home Studio, Star Fox Command, Mario & Luigi Partners in Time, more

Indulge your artistic side this week on the Wii U eShop with Art Academy: Home Studio, which offers 30 new art lessons to paint and draw with the Wii U GamePad. Players will be able to share their masterworks through the Miiverse, and even upload time-lapse videos to YouTube. Elsewhere in this week’s Nintendo Download (but still sticking with the Wii U) is Never Alone, an “atmospheric puzzle platformer” developed in collaboration with an Alaska Native people.
Also available the Wii U eShop this week are a pair of DS re-releases. Star Fox Command adds a touch of strategic plotting to the space shooting, while Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time adds time travel to the plumbing duo’s portable RPG series.
More information on all these games (and a bevy of new DSiWare titles) can be found after the break. (more…)
Splatoon has sold more than one million copies according to Nintendo

Brace yourself, I think the next few months will eventually become known as the Summer of the Squid. This morning, Nintendo announced that more than one million copies of Splatoon have been sold since the game’s launch in late May. Counting both physical and digital sales, the publisher was even helpful enough to break it down by region…
- The Americas: 476,000+
- Japan: 368,000+
- Europe: 230,000+
- Australia and New Zealand: 20,000
“Ever since Splatoon launched on May 29 in the United States, we’ve seen thousands of people go online to have fun in this colorful, chaotic competition,” said Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime.
Splatoon is already a very different game today than it was just three weeks ago. Nintendo has added a wide variety of new maps and weapons to the game, and plans are in place to release a major update (with new game modes) in August.
Nintendo approached Criterion to create a new F-Zero game for Wii U back in 2011

In 2013, Shigeru Miyamoto famously said that he has “no good ideas” for a new game in the F-Zero franchise. But it looks like the series of false starts that have plagued the franchise actually go back much further than that.
According to Nintendo Life, Nintendo of Europe asked Criterion to pitch a new F-Zero game, which would have been announced during the Wii U’s unveiling at the 2011 E3 Expo. However, because the studio was working on Need For Speed: Most Wanted at the time, they couldn’t commit to producing the playable demo that Nintendo wanted. If Criterion and Nintendo had come to an agreement, the game likely would have been released in November 2012, right around the Wii U’s launch window.
Though Nintendo continues to create every Mario game in-house, these types of partnerships have come to define the company in the GameCube/Wii/Wii U era. In fact, the consolemaker previously partnered with Sega to develop F-Zero GX for the GameCube, the most recent console game in the F-Zero series. An arcade adaptation, F-Zero AX, was also produced by Sega.
Nintendo might be giving more thought to the F-Zero series nowadays as it was resurrected, in a manner of speaking, through Mario Kart 8‘s first downloadable expansion pack. The Legend of Zelda X Mario Kart 8 DLC Pack included F-Zero’s signature racing machine, the Blue Falcon, as well as a new track based on the futuristic Mute City.
Tom Happ says Axiom Verge will probably be released for Wii U in 2016

Axiom Verge is currently only available on the PS4 and PC, but that will likely be changing in 2016. Tom Happ recently stopped by the comments section at Destructoid to say that the game will “probably” be available for the Wii U sometime in 2016:
I can’t commit to anything, but Axiom Verge will *probably* be available for Wii U in 2016. 3DS is quite a bit more difficult since the hardware is so completely different. Should Nintendo be reading this and decide to lend me a hand, that’d be VERY appreciated!!
Again, note the “probably” and the “I can’t commit to anything” just in front of it. Axiom Verge appearing on the Wii U in 2016 sounds like far from a done deal, but it also sounds like the game will appear on the platform eventually.
In the more immediate future, Axiom Verge will be released for the Vita sometime this year.

Jason Derulo, Mark Ronson, Lady Gaga, and more will dance all night in Just Dance 2016
I’ve lost count of the exact number of titles in Ubisoft’s Just Dance series, but like clockwork, the publisher announced another one at this year’s E3 Expo. Just Dance 2016 will include more than 40 new songs when it launches on October 20, 13 of which were announced during the show:
- The Black Eyed Peas – “I Gotta Feeling”
- Buraka Som Sistema – “Hangover (BaBaBa)”
- Calvin Harris (Featuring John Newman) – “Blame”
- David Guetta (Featuring Nicki Minaj, Afrojack, and Bebe Rexha) – “Hey Mama”
- Equinox Stars – “Let’s Groove”
- Hatsune Miku – “Ievan Polkka”
- Jason Derulo – “Want to Want Me”
- Lady Gaga – “Born This Way”
- Mark Ronson (Featuring Bruno Mars) – “Uptown Funk”
- Martin Garrix – “Animals”
- MAX – “Gibberish”
- Meghan Trainor – “All About That Bass”
- Rossini – “William Tell – Overture”
For the first time, players will also be able to subscribe to Just Dance Unlimited, a service that will provide access to the “best tracks” from previous Just Dance games, as well as a variety of exclusive songs. Just Dance Unlimited will launch with more than 150 songs and more will be added to the service throughout the year. The subscription service will be available only on the PS4, Wii U, and Xbox One, alongside three new game modes:
- Dance Party Mode: In the Dance Party mode, players can dance along with their friends and family in the classic rival mode or dance together to get the highest collective score as a group in the first ever co-op mode.
- Dance Quests Mode: Players can unlock dance quests for a chance to “beat the game” for the first time ever. In each quest, players will play a series of three songs for a chance to advance to the next set of dance quest challenges.
- World Video Challenge: The all-new World Video Challenge allows players to send videos of their performances to challenge friends from all around the world and dance to their scores as if they were in the same room!
Just Dance 2016 is also keeping the PS3, Wii, and Xbox 360 alive as the game will be released for those platforms in addition to the PS4, Wii U, and Xbox One this October.
Technical problems have forced Nintendo to postpone Splatoon’s first Splatfest

Bad news for Splatoon fans, technical problems have forced Nintendo to postpone the game’s first Slatfest event in North America.
The “Cats Versus Dogs” Splatfest was originally scheduled to take place tomorrow, June 20, but Nintendo has revealed that a “matchmaking issue” during the first Splatfest in Japan resulted in lengthy wait times and restricted players from joining matches. The consolemaker said they are “working on a solution,” but a little more time is needed to get it working perfectly. The Splatfest will be rescheduled for a later date, which will be announced “soon”:
We have decided to postpone the first North American Splatfest. We’ll have details on a new date soon!
— Nintendo of America (@NintendoAmerica) June 19, 2015
Even though tomorrow’s Splatfest has been postponed, Nintendo still plans to add the Bluefin Depot map to the game at 10:00 PM (Eastern Time).
Iwata is Listening: 5 Things Nintendo Needs to Hear After Negative E3 Reaction

In a year when big hitters like Microsoft, Sony, and Bethesda gave exciting, extraordinary E3 presentations that included a smooth blend of new tech, surprise reveals, and gorgeous gameplay videos, the reverse is true for Nintendo. The company, who gave up on live E3 presentations two years ago, delivered a lackluster Digital Event that sought to highlight games due out this year or early next year. This effectively ruled out showing any new footage from the still untitled Legend of Zelda Wii U, despite the fact it was revealed at last year’s E3. Not content with backing itself into a corner with this decision, we were told that the company’s new platform, the NX, would also not be touched upon. Yet, given how meager-looking the titles were for the Wii U, it has led to rampant speculation that the company is holding upcoming games back for its next console.
In summary, Xenoblade Chronicles X was shown. Again. Super Mario Maker was shown. Again, and not just from E3 2014, but also from the Nintendo World Championships. Yoshi’s Woolly World was shown. Again.
3DS owners fared far better, with the announcement of new games such as The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes and Hyrule Warriors Legends, a port of the underrated Wii U game. There was also a new Paper Mario-esque title, Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, and an odd Samus-lite Metroid game, Metroid Prime: Federation Force.
There were a few surprises for the Wii U, but not the good kind, and certainly not the ones fans wanted or expected, such as Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash or Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival (which is, essentially, Mario Party with Animal Crossing characters). The initial reaction to the presentation was best summed up by our good friends over at Nintendo Life:
As a Wii U owner and general advocate for Nintendo, I was not as angered as many who chose to vent their anger on social media, but after Sony and Microsoft made pitch-perfect presentations, to say I was disappointed in Nintendo’s efforts would be an understatement. Nintendo President (and part-time puppet) Satoru Iwata seemed equally aware of the reaction from gamers and fans around the world, taking to Twitter to reassure them the company was listening: “Thank you for watching until midnight. We take the various opinions for this year’s Digital Event very seriously. I would like to continue our efforts to be able to meet more and more of your expectations in the future.”
Unlike many armchair CEOs calling for his resignation, I personally think Iwata has steered Nintendo through a stormy chapter in its history, and is obviously aware that more change may be needed. With that in mind, here are five suggestions on how Nintendo can improve for next year. (more…)
