New Releases: Homefront, Okamiden, Yakuza 4, More

The Spring thaw is doing more than raising the mercury in your thermometer, it’s also bringing more big games to stores.

This week, THQ’s Red Dawn-inspired war game, Homefront, will be released on the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. In fact, Red Dawn director John Milius was heavily involved in the creator of Homefront’s storyline.

Other big name releases this week fall into a few well known franchises:

  • Capcom will release Okamiden, pint-sized spinoff of Okami, for the DS
  • Sega brings Kazuma Kiryu back to America (but keeps the game’s Japanese sensibilities intact) in Yakuza 4 (PS3).
  • Andre Agassi serves up his first video game appearance in over 15 years in Top Spin 4 (PS3, Wii, Xbox 360).
  • And finally, Sega will release Total War: Shogun 2 on the PC.

Call of Duty: Black Ops leads February sales, becomes bestselling game of all-time

After becoming the bestselling PS3 game, Call of Duty: Black Ops can now lay claim to just being the bestselling game, period.

According to the NPD Group, the Treyarch-developed game passed Wii Play in February to become the bestselling game of all-time. Exact sales figures weren’t released, but Wii Play is known to have sold over 13 million copies. So let’s call it 14 million. Of course, Wii Play is a Wii exclusive while the sales of Call of Duty: Black Ops have been split across the DS, PC, PS3, Wii and Xbox 360.

Not surprisingly, Black Ops was also the top-selling game in February, where it was joined by newcomers Marvel vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds, Killzone 3, Bulletstorm and Mario Sports Mix. The full top ten (which is still littered with dance games), can be seen right here:

1. Call of Duty: Black Ops (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, DS, PC)
2. Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds Xbox 360, PS3)
3. Just Dance 2 (Wii)
4. NBA 2K11 (Xbox 360, PS3, PSP, Wii, PS2, PC)
5. Dead Space 2 (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)

Burger Time HD likely incoming for consoles and PC

An ESRB rating of E for Everyone popped up for Burger Time HD, with PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, and PC as listed platforms. Good luck with the whole HD thing on Wii, unless Michael Pachter is finally getting his wish. The game has received many iterations over the years, but many will remember it as an NES classic, a kind of Donkey Kong for Epicureans.

New Releases: Pokemon Black/White, Fight Night Champion, Rift, More

Released in Japan last Fall, Pokemaniacs in North America have been anxiously awaiting the day that Pokemon: Black Version and Pokemon: White Version would make the jump across the Pacific. And, with the 3DS less than a month away, that day is finally upon us. Let’s hope you’re ready to catch ’em all.

If catching them all doesn’t hold any appeal for you, there are several other non-Pokemon options among this week’s new releases. There’s Fight Night Champion (PS3, Xbox 360), EA Sports’ latest reinvention of their boxing franchise; there’s Rift (PC), the first MMORPG from Trion Worlds; and there’s Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War II: Retribution (PC), the newest expansion in the strategy series.

THQ announces video game adaptation of Rio

THQ and Twentieth Century Fox today announced the standalone game adaptation, Rio, for the latest CG extravaganza from Blue Sky Studios. This game will be separate from the movie’s cross-over with Angry Birds, which Nintendo President Reggie Fils-Aime called “a great piece of experience,” in an apparent loss of understanding of the English language.

The movie depicts a group of birds and their adventures on the Rio de Janeiro. The game will be a multiplayer party game with 40 mini-games across five modes that players can easily hop in and out of. Rio will be released for every platform under the sun except the soon to be irrelevant PSP (re: Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, Nintendo DS). The DS version will be different from its big brother home console version, in which the character Blu discovers hip hop and Latin beats in a rhythm-style game.

Martin Good, THQ’s Executive Vice President of Kids, Family and Casual Games, stated “Rio’s humor, compelling characters, thrilling story, colorful characters and wonderful music inspired us to create a unique and imaginative game experience.”

The game will be available April 12, three days before the film hits theaters.

New Releases: Killzone 3, Bulletstorm, De Blob 2, More

Two pairs of heavyweights in their respective genres go head-to-head in this week’s new releases.

First up, we have the launch two major first person shooters… Sony’s continued fight against the Helghast in Killzone 3 (PS3) versus Epic Games’ latest fragfest, Bulletstorm (PC, PS3, Xbox 360). Don’t forget, the Xbox 360 version of Bulletstorm comes in an “Epic Edition” that inlcudes a few in-game goodies and access to the Gears of War 3 beta.

The next fight is a little less high profile (and both games come from the same publisher), but in a battle between handheld RPGs… Atlus is bringing Radiant Historia to the DS and also bringing Ys I & II Chronicles to the PSP.

Standing alone is THQ’s De Blob 2 (DS, PS3, Wii, Xbox 360), which would probably be a unique title at any time of the year.
