XBL Store Today: 1001 Spikes, Blood of the Werewolf

1001spikes-header

Two retro-style platformers made their way to the Xbox Live Game Store today.

Nicalis’ 1001 Spikes is a punishing platformer for the Xbox One that gives players 1,001 lives right from the start. And players will need them all to traverse the spikes, pits, and enemies that will challenge adventurer Aban Hawkins behind the Golden Door of Poko-Mum.

Also available this week is Blood of the Werewolf, a “love letter to classic platformers” from Scientifically Proven and Midnight City. Blood of the Werewolf was released for the PC earlier this year and now it’s found it’s way to the Xbox 360.

More details about both games can be found after the break. (more…)

Mortal Kombat X: Ed Boon reveals new characters and story, gameplay details

Ed Boon, the Creative Director at NetherRealm Studios, stopped by the PlayStation Blog Stage yesterday to talk about Mortal Kombat X. Secrets were revealed as Boon was finally ready to reveal the future of Mortal Kombat.

Those who enjoyed 2011’s Mortal Kombat will be right at home with Mortal Kombat X. The game uses a very similar fighting engine and retains the three-tiered Super Meter. Boon says the Meter has been “refined,” but it still offers the same progression of Enhanced Attack to Breaker to X-Ray Move. And for those that played NetherRealm’s Injustice: Gods Among Us, Boon confirmed that the interactive stages first seen in that game will also appear in MKX.

Boon also revealed some new stuff, including four brand new characters. Currently, the Character Selection screen has 24 slots. This may change in the future, but as it stands today, we’re looking at 18 additional characters yet to be discovered. D’Vorah is the half-insect/half-human character that we saw in the debut trailer as she did battle with Torr and Ferra, “the big hulk and the little lady on his shoulders,” according to Boon. We also got a quick glimpse of Kotal Kahn and Cassie Cage, who is the daughter of Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade. Boon said that her attacks will be patterned after both of her parents.

Before a fight, players will be able to select a Variation for each character. Similar to Fighting Styles from the Deadly Alliance trilogy, Variations will open up different attacks and strategic choices for each character.

Finally, the developer opened up about where the story will go after Mortal Kombat’s wild ending. According to Boon, “The story [begins] right after Mortal Kombat (2011) ended and goes as far as 25 years in the future.” That means that descendents of some of the original characters (like Cassie Cage) will show up along with aged versions of the more familiar characters. And the final boss is said to be “surprise returning character” that “not a lot of people will see coming.”

Is it Goro? I bet it’s Goro. Mortal Kombat X will be released for the PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One sometime in 2015.

Experience the horrors of war in MGSV: The Phanton Pain’s E3 trailer

“We’ll make diamonds from their ashes. Take them into battle with us. A shining light to our brothers in arms. Even in death, we are Diamond Dogs.”

Hideo Kojima unleashed another epic trailer for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain during last night’s Sony Press Conference. Konami has since uploaded a Director’s Cut version of the trailer that adds the above quote, which serves as a kind of unifying theme to the entire trailer.

A playable version of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will be available at this year’s E3 Expo for the first time. And the game is currently scheduled to appear on the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One at some unknown future date. Unless it’s some kind of secret code from Kojima, the “Coming 1984” flash at the end of the trailer is likely just a reference to the game’s setting.

Sony @ E3 14: Mortal Kombat X gameplay trailer revealed

sonye32014-header

While the CG trailer for Mortal Kombat X was entertaining, fans were immediately clamoring for some footage of the game in motion. And during their E3 Press Conference, Sony delivered. We were treated to Scorpion and Sub-Zero battling it out along with two new characters, a demonic woman in a cloak and a giant carrying a little dude on his shoulders (Master Blaster?).

So here’s Mortal Kombat X, in all its bloody glory:

FIFA 15 lets you “feel” the game on September 23

So, in case you didn’t know, I’m British. Therefore, I must love football soccer – right? Well, no. However, I do love actor, and totally cool dude, Idris Elba. It’s this fact which makes the FIFA 15 E3 trailer exciting to me.

If you don’t love Luther, FIFA 15 will apparently boast player emotions, allowing soccerballers to react to bad tackles, missed penalties, and fantastic goals – just like in real life. Of course, there will also be plenty of tweaks to the presentation including new bench reactions, sideline character animations, 10-man goal celebrations, and more. This is alongside prettier graphics, better AI, and some smaller added details, all of which will probably make for the best FIFA yet.

But, then again, EA says that every year. FIFA 15 will be available for the PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and “other platforms” on September 23 (September 25 in Europe).

EA @ E3 14: Battlefield Hardline beta begins today on PC, PS4

eagamese32014-header

It looks like EA still has one Battlefield Hardline surprise up their sleeves. After showing a very cool trailer for Visceral’s upcoming cops-and-robbers game, Sony’s Adam Boyes revealed that a multiplayer beta for the game is available RIGHT NOW for the PC and PS4. Interested players can sign up at Battlefield.com/hardline. I gotta say, this news almost makes the earlier leaks look like a very calculated marketing move on EA’s part.

Battlefield Hardline will be available for the PC, PS4, Xbox One, PS3, and Xbox 360 on October 21.

MS @ E3 14: Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare DLC will come to Xbox consoles first

microsofte32014-header

Microsoft kicked off their 2014 E3 Press Conference with Call of Duty… again. I’d have to check the archives, but I’m pretty sure I’ve written that sentence at least once before (replacing the “2014” with “2013” or “2012,” obviously). As usual, the consolemaker has announced that every downloadable map pack for the upcoming Call of Duty: Advanced Warface will be available for the Xbox One (and probably the Xbox 360, as well) first.

Activision then gave the crowd a nearly ten-minute look at one of the game’s action-packed levels. Be on the lookout for that later today or sometime this week.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare will be released on November 4.
