Tomb Raider reboot already has one million players

tombraider-header

It looks like fans are loving Lara Croft’s return to gaming in the rebooted Tomb Raider prequel, which was released by Square Enix on Tuesday. How big is the party? Well, Karl Stewart, Crystal Dynamics’ Global Brand Director, has tweeted that over one million people have played the game since the launch date:

With GameFly and Blockbuster (yes, they still exist) and Redbox rentals, this likely doesn’t translate to one million copies sold… yet. But with this many players already, Tomb Raider is well on its way to unearthing even more riches from the retail counter.

Retro City Rampage Review: Nostalgia Gone Wild

retrocityrampge-header

“What would Grand Theft Auto have been like on the NES?” It’s an interesting question, and one that Vblank’s Retro City Rampage attempts to answer by fusing the franchise’s original bird’s-eye viewpoint with a bucketful of 80s/90s nostalgia. The game never quite comes together, but designer Brian Provinciano definitely deserves points for trying. (more…)

Deadpool will be the Greatest Game Ever… according to Deadpool’s mom

In keeping with Deadpool’s comic book traditions, this none-too-serious trailer continues to break down the fourth wall, the titular character narrating this pastiche of other game previews. “You start with weird drony music, everything dark and foreboding. And stuff… Screw this!”

From here on in, we have air guitar, hand puppets, and Cable. That’s right, the trailer confirms the inclusion of Nathan Summers, the son of Scott Summers (AKA Cyclops) and Madelyne Prior (erm… AKA Madelyne Prior). The future soldier inflicted with a techno-organic virus partnered with Deadpool in what is arguably the pair’s best comic series, Cable & Deadpool. Also confirmed (via IMDB) is the inclusion of Cable’s other partner, the hot probability-altering assassin, Domino, as well as the whirlwind-generating marauder, Riptide, and everyone’s favourite Canadian, Wolverine.

While the juvenile, sexist humour may not be to everyone’s taste, the trailer at least shows that developer High Moon is willing to have a bit of fun with the design of the game, and that’s never a bad thing.

Halo 4: Majestic Map Pack Review: Close-Quarters Fun

halo4-header

The Halo 4 Majestic Map Pack marks the second batch of downloadable multiplayer maps, and it is clear that 343 Industries went with the “less is more” approach – believing less space leads to more intense, frenetic action. And wow, did it work like a charm. (more…)

XBLA Today: Dollar Dash, Capcom Arcade Cabinet: 1985-I Pack

dollardash-header

Today’s Xbox Live Arcade update includes two new games…

First up is the Bomberman-like bank-robbing game Dollar Dash. If you’ve ever wanted to own one of those sacks with a big dollar sign on it, Dollar Dash is available to download for 800 Microsoft Points ($10):

Find it, rob it, and keep it. Grab the cash in this fast and frenetic top down multiplayer versus game. Dollar Dash will have you shouting for joy, as you make a dash with the cash. You must attack, defend or outrun your competitors in any of the three game modes (Dollar Dash, Save the Safe or Hit’n’Run) using unique and comedic tactics. Stand out from the crowd by customising your character, upgrading your favourite weapon, earning perks and unlocking achievements. You can’t stand still for a second as combat is crazy and money changes hands frequently. Choose your weapons carefully as you challenge your friends to become the best thief in town and laugh out loud as you smash them with a huge Bolder, peck them with a Mag Pie, while protecting yourself in Jelly!

Also available this week is the second installment in the Capcom Arcade Cabinet series, which includes Ghosts ‘n Goblins, Gun Smoke, and Section Z . The “1985-I Pack” is also available to download for 800 Microsoft Points ($10).

Mass Effect 3: Citadel DLC now available

The final downloadable expansion for Mass Effect 3, “Citadel,” is now available to download on the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. The “emotionally driven” farewell to Commander Shepard and the crew of the Normandy has been priced at $14.99 (or 1200 Microsoft Points) on all platforms.

This emotionally driven piece of single player DLC expands on the events of Mass Effect 3 by inviting players to return to the capital of the Citadel Council in an effort to eliminate a startling threat. This new content will also feature Commander Shepard’s long-time friends and romance interests from the entire Mass Effect trilogy, as Mass Effect 3: Citadel offers one more chance for fans to reconnect with their favorite characters and even rekindle past romances.

In addition to new story content, Mass Effect 3: Citadel will also give players the opportunity to use squad members from the entire Mass Effect series in a brand-new training facility on the Citadel. The Armax Combat Arena offers ten scenarios and will challenge players by dropping them in the middle of battle to fight off wave-after-wave of enemy forces. When the adventure is over, players can blow off some steam by trying their luck at the Citadel’s Silver Coast Casino or discover and furnish Commander Shepard’s living quarters on the station.

BioWare will put a cap on the career of Commander Shepard during this year’s PAX East convention. Executive Producer Casey Hudson, Lead Designer Preston Watamaniuk, Lead Cinematics Director Parrish Ley, Writer John Dobmrow and Level Designer Dusty Everman will take the stage on Saturday, March 23 at 2:00 PM to present “The Mass Effect Trilogy: A Retrospective.”

If at all possible, I suggest getting in line now.
