XBLA Today: Dust: An Elysian Tail

Microsoft’s Summer of Arcade promotion comes to a close this year with Dust: An Elysian Tail. Dust is a side-scrolling action RPG featuring the “Metroidvania” style of exploration within a hand-painted world. It also stars talking rabbits, a furry fairy, and a sentient sword. So… yeah…
Dust: An Elysian Tail is priced at 1200 Microsoft Points ($15) and is available to download now:
Immerse yourself in a gorgeous hand-painted world on a search for your true identity. As the mysterious warrior, Dust, you must master the ancient Blade of Ahrah to battle dozens of enemies with an intuitive combat system, take on a variety of quests, discover powerful upgrades throughout the massive, open world, and uncover the story of an ancient civilization on the brink of extinction as you fight to uncover your own past.

Capcom asks players to “Remember Me” in May 2013
Take one part Total Recall and add in a dash of… actually that’s it. Capcom’s next original project, Remember Me, looks like a new twist on Philip K. Dick’s classic sci-fi story. But instead of the hulking hugeness of Arnold Schwarzenegger or the svelte suaveness of Colin Farrell, Remember Me stars Nilin, a female “memory hunter” who has had her own memory erased.
In the world of Remember Me, memory hunters “[have] the special ability to break into people’s minds and steal or even change their memories.” OK, so a dash of Inception made it into developer Dontnod’s first game as well.
This genre soup will reach stores in May 2013 on the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. But you can check out the first trailer above. It’s pretty impressive, even if it does look a little familiar.

Hybrid Review: When Scribblenauts Attack!

Developer 5th Cell is best known for fun, family-friendly games like Drawn to Life, Lock’s Quest, and the truly innovative Scribblenauts. So it was quite the surprise when they announced their next project would be a violent third-person shooter, with Maxwell going postal after collecting one too many of those damn starites. Well, not quite (though that would be awesome); instead, they have created the sci-fi-themed Hybrid, featuring unique cover and mobility mechanics that differentiate it from the crowded shooter genre. Dead Space 3 set for February 5, 2013; Limited Edition announced

Gamescom 2012 opens tomorrow in Cologne, Germany and many game publishers have begun to push out new announcements ahead of the big European show. For example, EA has announced that Dead Space 3 will be released for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 on February 5, 2013.
Not content to just announced the release date, the publisher has also confirmed that everyone who pre-orders the horror title will receive an upgraded “Limited Edition” complete with bonus gear:
“First Contact” Bundle
First Contact Suit: This unique EVA (Extra-Vehicular Activity) suit was built by the SCAF (Sovereign Colonies Armed Forces) for encounters with “foreign entities.” It sports a flamboyant golden finish to provide protection from long-term space exposure and thick armor for… unspecified reasons. The suit was given the nickname “First Contact” by the scientists who made it.
Negotiator Weapon: While technically classified by the SCAF as a “scientific instrument,” the gold-plated “Negotiator” is loaded with some surprisingly aggressive hardware. The overclocked, top-mounted Tesla Beam is capable of bursting a man-sized organism into several pieces with a single shot. The bottom-mounted Linegun appears to have been built with the sole purpose of cleanly dismembering organic tissue from a distance.
“Witness the Truth” Bundle
Witness Suit: These insulated suits were worn by a SCAF deep dig team assigned to exhume the darkest secrets of Tau Volantis. Whatever they found locked deep in the ice changed them forever. When they emerged weeks later, they were covered head to toe in strange graffiti and claimed to be “Witnesses to the Truth.”
Evangelizer Weapon: A modification of the standard AL-2 used by the Sovereign Colonies Legionaries, this version sports a souped-up AL-2g assault rifle on the top with an Emerson 2100 “Big Boy” tactical shotgun on the bottom. The surviving “Witnesses” of the SCAF deep dig team dubbed it the Evangelizer and decorated them top to bottom with strange symbols.
Be afraid Necromorphs, be very afraid.

Jet Set Radio HD tagged with a September release date
Yesterday, Sega tagged every version of their high definition remake of Jet Set Radio with a release date and a very nice price. Ready? Here we go…
If you’re interested in purchasing the game from the PlayStation Network, it’ll be available to download on September 18. However, if you’re a PlayStation Plus member, you’ll receive early access to Jet Set Radio on September 11. Either way, the game will set you back $9.99.
PC and Xbox 360 owners will be able to download the game through Steam and the Xbox Live Arcade, respectively, on September 19. Once again, whichever version you choose will be priced at $9.99 (well, it’ll be listed as 800 Microsoft Points on the Xbox 360).
Finally, the Vita version will be downloadable from the PSN on October 16, and it too will carry a 9.99 pricetag.
Not bad Sega, not bad. Now where’d I leave my roller blades?
NCAA Football 13 is the bestselling game of July 2012
The NPD Group has released their list of the ten bestselling games of July 2012 and, surprising no one, NCAA Football 13 took the top spot.
The football sim was the only new release from the month of July to crack the top ten, but to be fair, there weren’t very many games released last month. Instead, the top ten is populated by holdovers like Lego Batman 2, The Amazing Spider-Man, and two Call of Duty games (Black Ops and Modern Warfare 3). According to Joystiq, this motley crew could only manage sales of $260.7 million, a 23% drop from July 2011’s take of $338.5 million.
The full top ten is available after the break. (more…)
