Max Payne 3 trailer #2 has a lot of grit
Max Payne is back in this new trailer for Max Payne 3, which is made from in-game footage, if you can believe it. It looks gritty, badass, and realistic. You can practically smell the alcohol on Payne’s breath. Great job, Rockstar.
Max Payne 3 will be on May 15 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and May 29 on PC.

Gears of War 3’s “Forces of Nature” pack coming March 27

Are you ready for more downloadable content for Gears of War 3? Microsoft has revealed that the next map pack, Forces of Nature, will be available on Marcy 27. The pack will inlcude five new maps (each with a natural disaster theme), several new weapons, more Achievements, and a four-pack of new skins. And all of this will be free for Gears of War 3 Season Pass holders. Pricing for the rest of us wasn’t announced, but each previous pack sold for 800 Microsoft Points ($10).
Want the lowdown on the new maps? Here you go:
Aftermath – Aftermath is a government park after a tsunami. There is seaweed and wreckage everywhere, and the main play space sits under a huge cargo ship which was deposited on top of a building during the storm. The area floods and quakes during gameplay, as the whole thing is teetering on the edge of falling into the water below. This has gameplay implications as it is difficult to aim during the quakes, and difficult to be stealthy while splashing through the water.
Artillery – Artillery starts out looking like an ordinary military base, but during gameplay a storm kicks up. Lightning begins to flash on the horizon and eventually a tornado develops and sweeps near the play space. Dust and debris are kicked up making it difficult to see, and the buffeting winds can mask your approach.
Cove – Cove is a small port that the Stranded have taken over and turned into a little village. The map is very open with long lines of sight, but there is a really, really heavy layer of fog that masks just about everything. There’s a really nice sniper nest inside a central ship, but the sniper’s form is silhouetted by the low angle light shining through the fog.
Jacinto (Remake) – Jacinto was a beautiful city, but huge stalks have popped up through the buildings and flooded the entire area with imulsion. Half of the map is dead and crumbling, with imulsion fumes hanging in the air. To make matters worse, the drizzle that is present when a match begins quickly develops into a heavy rain storm that impedes visibility and lines of sight as water starts sheeting off the buildings.
Raven Down (Remake) – Raven Down is a very small crossroads that is blanketed in a blinding snow storm. A Raven helicopter has crashed in the storm, and crashed through an elevated train on its way down, so there’s train wreckage to deal with as well. The snowstorm ebbs occasionally, but is more often so heavy that it’s difficult to see more than a few meters ahead at any given time.

Atlus teases US release for Persona 4: The Ultimate… probably
Last year, Atlus announced Persona 4: The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena, a fighting game spinoff of the popular RPG series developed by Arc System Works (who are also responsible for BlazBlue). Until now, it had only been confirmed for Japan, but it looks like an American release is in the works as well. Probably.
Yesterday, the publisher sent out an email to their Atlus Faitful mailing list that contained just a black rectangle. But if you have a crappy monitor like I do where black doesn’t really mean black, you could see letters hiding in the supposedly blank email. After a little image manipulation, the “Stay Tuned” image to your left became clear.
Atlus being Atlus, this could be anything. But the investigators at NeoGAF narrowed it down to Persona 4: The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena (which will probably have a different title in the US) due to the starburst pattern in the game’s logo (which is also in the “Stay Tuned” image).
Persona 4: The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena will be available in Japan for the PS3 and Xbox 360 this Summer with an American release to follow. Probably. But also very likely.

Another Prototype 2 Collector’s Edition announced
Check out the trailer for Radical Entertainment’s latest Prototype 2 collector’s edition (it’s also getting the previously announced RadNet Edition). Dubbed the Blackwatch Edition, this version of the game carries a premium price ($79.99) and Activision has produced a premium trailer to show it off. Why a collector’s edition of a game requires a trailer is beyond me, but this one isn’t actually that bad.
What’s included in this edition? I’m glad you asked:
- Prototype 2 RadNet Edition Content
- Free Prototype 2 DLC Pack #1 – Colossal Mayhem
- Official Prototype 2 Soundtrack CD
- Exclusive Prototype 2 Hardbound Art Book
- Dark Horse Digital Comic “Prototype: The Labrinth”
- 20% Discount Voucher at Prototype Merchandise Store
Fans eager to play as James Heller and kill Alex Mercer should be extra pleased with this collector’s edition, and should pre-order it now as supplies are limited (or so they say). I still haven’t played the original Prototype, but I want to play it more after watching that trailer.
Prototype 2 will be available for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 on April 24.

Jordan Mechner remaking Karateka for PSN, XBLA
Jordan Mechner, known best for his creation of the Prince of Persia series, has announced that he will be remaking his 1984 hit, Karateka.
Developed in his dorm room at Yale and published by Broderbund, Karateka took the PC gaming world by storm with its “simple, addictive 2D fighting mechanics that incorporated cinematic storytelling through fluid, lifelike animation.”
Mechner will be taking on the role of creative director on this project. “Making the original Karateka was a labor of love. To have so many people embrace it and share the impact that game had on them has been incredibly fulfilling. In remaking Karateka, I want to honor the original with a compact, pick-up-and-play game that is fluid, atmospheric and beautiful,” said Mechner.
Watch out for the remake of Karateka later this year on the PSN and XBLA.
