Dead Space: Aftermath dismembers your DVD player today
Have you been spending your day dismembering necromorphs in Dead Space 2? When you’re ready for a break, you might want to check out Dead Space: Aftermath, the latest animated movie based on the game series.
Available on DVD and Blu-ray today, Aftermath continues the story from Dead Space and tells the tale of the USG O’Bannon (fun fact: Alien was written by Dan O’Bannon), the first ship to answer the distress signal on Aegis VII. The same creative team responsible for the first animated film based on the series, Dead Space: Downfall, have stepped back behind the camera for Aftermath.
Here’s a trailer in case you need more convincing:
Konami announces a Fall release for Silent Hill: Downpour
After a teasing reveal in the latest issue of Game Informer, Konami is ready to officially announce Silent Hill: Downpour. Developed by Vatra Games, the game will be coming to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sometime this Fall.
Downpour will follow Murphy Pendleton’s adventures in Silent Hill after his prison transport bus crashes and strands the convict in the foggy hamlet. Pendleton begins the game lost and alone in the woods on the outskirts of the fabled town and it only goes downhill from there when he enters The Diner and The Devil’s Pit.
Vatra and Konami have revealed that they are attempting to create a game that is “claustrophobic” while also giving off the feeling that “the player is never truly alone.” To invoke this mood, Konami has enlisted composer Daniel Licht (“Dexter”) to create the soundtrack for Silent Hill: Downpour.

Rockstar confirms L.A. Noire’s May 17 release
In case you missed the leaked trailer this weekend, Rockstar Games has officially released the second trailer for L.A. Noire and you can check it out above.
As expected, the PS3 and Xbox 360 game has been tagged with a May 17 release date, so we won’t have to wait much longer to start chasing a serial killer in the noirish 1940s.

Mortal Kombat: Rebirth digital series officially announced
If you were amazed by the pitch video by Kevin Tancharoen attempting to sell the idea of a new Mortal Kombat movie (see above), you’re in luck. If you weren’t, there’s something wrong with you. Today Warner Premiere officially announced they would be taking on Tancharoen as director for a digital live action mini-series exploring the background of some of MK’s most prolific characters, such as Scorpion, Johnny Cage, and Liu Kang. The original video contained more realistic back stories for fantastical characters like Scorpion and Reptile, and focused on these and other MK villains terrorizing “Deacon City.” It’s not clear if this will continue the concept or cast of the original video, but in any case you can be this project in some very passionate, capable hands.
While the first Mortal Kombat movie (and theme song) has enjoyed cult classic status, the second was seen as a major embarrassment for fans of the series. But with a killer game returning to the series roots on April 19th and a series helmed by someone with a vision like Tancharoen, 2011 could be one of the best years yet for the series.
Warner Premiere revealed that the ten-part anthology series will be available through “digital online retailers” this Spring.

See the Pesticide Gun in action in new EDF: Insect Armageddon trailer
I’ve had more fun on the Xbox 360 with Earth Defense Force 2017 then I’ve had with almost any other game. And after four long years, D3 Publisher is finally readying a sequel in Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon.
The publisher has shifted development duties to Vicious Cycle (and added a PS3 version), but it looks like the same bug-stomping, city-levelling gameplay will remain intact. Especially after checking out this trailer showcasing the Pesticide Gun, one of 300 weapons that’ll make the cut when the game ships this Spring.

Leaked L.A. Noire trailer reveals May 17 release date
UPDATE: Rockstar has removed the trailer from YouTube. But Monday is only two days away.
Rockstar planned to release the latest trailer for L.A. Noire on Monday, but German gaming site Playfront.de (among others) beat them to the punch by adding it to YouTube today.
The trailer gives off that dark, moody vibe that is typical of the noir storytelling tradition and it also reveals the game’s release date: May 17.
Developer Team Bondi may have taken their sweet time in bringing the game to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, but the trailer shows it will likely have been worth the wait.
You can see the trailer for yourself (until Rockstar pulls it down that is) after the break. (more…)

New Releases: Dead Space 2, Two Worlds II, Lord of Arcana, More

If no one in space can hear you scream, then you’d be forgiven for not knowing that Electronic Arts plans to release Dead Space 2 this week. Of course, if the necromorphs infected you with a desire for more Dead Space after one of their previous games, you’re likely bouncing off the walls of your home as if there wasn’t any gravity inside.
A pair of RPGs round out the rest of the major new releases this week. Square Enix will be bringing action RPG Lord of Arcana to the PSP while SouthPeak Interactive will be bringing Two Worlds II to the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.
The full list of the rest of this week’s new releases can be found after the break. (more…)

Crysis 2 multiplayer demo coming next week on Xbox Live
Starting January 25th, Xbox Live Gold subscribers will be able to take part in the multiplayer demo of Crytek’s latest game, Crysis 2. The demo will feature the “Skyline” map and the modes “Team Instant Action” (re: our super accessible team deathmatch you will not get overwhelmed by!!!) and the more tactical “Crash Site.” The first mode is what you’d expect of normal team deathmatch while the latter has two teams scrambling to find and acquire alien drop pods.
The full game will come with six game modes and twelve maps, all developed by Crytek’s dedicated multiplayer team, Crytek UK. Fans following the studio will know that Crytek UK is the company’s re-branding of Free Radical, developers of Time Splitters, formed by senior members of the original team at Rare who worked on Goldeneye 64 and the first Perfect Dark. Hopefully some of that multiplayer magic will carry over into Crysis 2.
