First episode of Resident Evil Revelations 2 will launch on February 17

Capcom has released a new trailer for Resident Evil Revelations 2 that gives us our first look at the game’s second playable character (former STARS officer Barry Burton) and its release date. Or rather, release dates, as Revelations 2 will be released episodically before getting a retail disc compilation:

He’s back! Fan favorite and classic STARS member Barry Burton will be returning in Resident Evil Revelations 2. Headed for the remote prison island in search of his missing daughter, Moira Burton, Barry meets brand new character Natalia Korda, a little girl who has a strange power that allows her to sense enemies and hidden items. Using this skill alongside Barry’s proven combat abilities, players will need to alternate between the two to survive the mysterious island and find Moira.

The first episode will be available on February 17, 2015 for PS3 and PS4 owners in America. PC, Xbox 360, and Xbox One owners (as well as PlayStation users in Europe) will get it a day later. Four episodes will be released in total with a new episode scheduled to launch every week thereafter until March 10. Each episode has been priced at $5.99 apiece, but a Complete Season pass will also be available for $24.99.

The Complete Season pass includes all four main episodes as well as two spinoff episodes focusing on Barry Burton’s daughter Moira Burton and the mysterious Natalia Korda. Everybody’s favorite Umbrella employee, Hunk, will also be included in the game’s Raid Mode. If you opt for the retail disc version, you’ll receive all that as well as four alternate costumes, the option to play as Albert Wesker in Raid Mode, and the Raid More Throwback Stage Pack.

Not surprisingly, the retail disc version will be released on March 10 as well.

New Releases: Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, The Crew, Kingdom Hearts 2.5 ReMix, More

newreleases120214

Welcome to December, ladies and gentlemen! On the average, December is a month that doesn’t see many new releases, but 2014 appears to be different. Six major releases will be available in stores this week, which is extremely atypical for the the first week of the final month of the year.

We start things off with the delightful and adorable Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker for the Wii U. Based on the Captain Toad sections found in last year’s Super Mario 3D World, Nintendo may have outdone themselves with their latest attempt to cram a ton of cuteness into a game while keeping the gameplay appropriate for all ages. Yup, I thinkl Toad in an archaeologist costume searching for lost treasure means we’ve finally reached “Maximum Nintendo.”

Next up is Ubisoft’s cross-country racer The Crew. Available for the PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox 360, Ubisoft held several beta tests to ensure that The Crew’s online modes work like a charm. Also available this week is Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMix, a new Kingdom Hearts compilation for the PS3.

Speaking of compilations, Nintendo has smushed together both NES Remix games into a Wii U retail disc known as the NES Remix Pack. It’ll be joined by Ultimate NES Remix, a 3DS edition of the NES-based minigame collection.

Finally this week, Terraria will make the jump to the PS4 and the Xbox One.

Evolve Behind-The-Scenes Part 3: Creating A Hunter

Turtle Rock Studios and Adam Sessler areback with another behind-the-scenes look at Evolve. In the previous video, they gave us a closer look at the game’s Monsters and their evolution from prototype to the present day. This time, we get to zero in on what makes the Hunters tick via early prototype footage from the game. Evolve’s developers also admit that they’re secretly teenagers as they discuss the game’s Perk system, weapons, and the personalities of the Hunters.

Evolve will be released for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on February 10.

Ubisoft to apologize for Assassin’s Creed: Unity bugs with free Dead Kings DLC

assassincreedunity-header

To say that Assassin’s Creed: Unity‘s launch has been problematic would be an understatement. Multiple bugs and glitches have plagued players of Ubisoft’s game and some have even gone so far as to call for a full recall. As of right now, Ubisoft doesn’t have any plans to issue a recall, but they do want to do right by gamers who feel they’ve purchased an unfinished product.

First, the publisher will suspend sales of Unity’s Season Pass, effective immediately. Instead, Ubisoft has announced the planned downloadable expansion, Dead Kings, will be available free of charge for everyone that purchased Unity. Players who have already purchased the Season Pass (or Unity’s Gold Edition) will be eligible to receive one of six Ubisoft titles (The Crew, Far Cry 4, Watch Dogs, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Rayman Legends, or Just Dance 2015) instead.

Finally, Ubisoft has confirmed that the rest of the contents of the Season Pass, including the standalone Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China game, will be released as scheduled.

Developers at Ubisoft Montreal will continue to work day and night to patch the problems found in Assassin’s Creed: Unity. A message from CEO Yannis Mallat concerning the situation was recently posted on the game’s official website.

Game of Thrones: Iron From Ice is coming next week

We knew that the first episode from Telltale Games’ Game of Thrones adaptation was coming soon, but now we know that “soon” is actually next week. More specifically, Game of Thrones: Iron From Ice will be available on December 2 (PC, PS3, and PS4), December 3 (Xbox 360 and Xbox One), and December 4 depending upon your platform of choice:

While sooner is always better, I’m sure there was a very vocal contingent of people within Telltale who were tempted to launch the first episode on December 21 just so they could appropriate the “Winter Is Coming” tagline.

After you’re done groaning, you can also check out the game’s debut trailer, which has been embedded above.

Insert Quarter: Remembering the Best Instruction Booklets Ever

insertquarter-header

Insert Quarter is our showcase for some of the best and most interesting writing about video games on the Internet.

Creating a beautiful and engaging instruction booklet has become a lost art in today’s go-go world of downloadable games and extensive in-game tutorials. Some, like Yacht Club Games and their awesome booklet for Shovel Knight, are attempting to keep the practice alive. But it seems like a foregone conclusion that the instruction booklet will have breathed its last in the not-too-distant future.

Thankfully, Jason Dafnis of Game Informer took some time out of his day to honor ten of his favorite instruction booklets, manuals, and strategy guides:

Let me spin you a yarn. Times were, you’d open that brand-new cardboard (or plastic) box and there, nestled right next to your cartridge (or disc), would be a booklet. Yes, a booklet – paper pages stapled together that told you how to play the game (and sometimes more). Remember those?

Now the left (or right) side of your game case sits bare or thinly veiled with tie-in ads or DLC codes. Those clippies that once held your booklet are all but obsolete. Booklets might not be completely extinct, but they are on the way out. Here are ten of our favorites in no particular order.

The full article is available at Game Informer.

Xbox Store Today: Geometry Wars 3, Tales From the Borderlands, Pinball Arcade

talesfromtheborderlands-header

Happy Thanksgiving Eve everybody! For Xbox, it’s time to be thankful for three new games, including two of the most anticipated titles of the Fall.

First up is Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions (Xbox One, Xbox 360), Lucid Games’ first entry in the twin-stick shooter series. Lucid is comprised of several employees from original Geometry Wars developer Bizarre Creations, so they’re definitely familiar with the franchise’s formula while adding in companion drones, super moves, and a 3D playing field.

Also available today is Tales From the Borderlands: Zer0 Sum, the first episode in Telltale’s latest episodic series. Taking place on the planet of Pandora, Tales From the Borderlands has the full blessing of Gearbox and will serve as an official continuation of the franchise’s story until we get Borderlands 3.

Finally this week, FarSight has brought The Pinball Arcade to the Xbox One.

More information on all of these games can be found after the break. (more…)
