Project Spark will be Free-To-Play for everyone on Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC

Creative gamers everywhere, rejoice! Community Manager Mike Lescault has announced on Reddit that Project Spark, Microsoft’s upcoming free-to-play video game in which you make other video games, will not require an Xbox Live Gold Subscription in order to take advantage of its game-creation goodness.

This comes as great news to those who only carry Live Free status, or, like myself, have family members on the same system without a Gold membership. A beta for Project Spark is set to hit the Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Windows 8 is set to hit some time in January.

Namco Bandai trademarks Soul Calibur: Unbreakable Soul in US

soulcalibur-header

The soul still burns.

It’s looking more and more likely that Namco Bandai is prepping a new Soul Calibur announcement. Yesterday, the publisher submitted a trademark application for a game known as “Soul Calibur: Unbreakable Soul” with the US Patent and Trademark Office. Right now, all we know is that the trademark applies to “computer game software” and also includes a section stating that the game will include online play.

Namco Bandai filed an identical trademark application with the Trademarks and Designs Registration Office of the European Union several weeks ago. So while we’re still waiting on an official announcement, this is definitely more than a rumor.

God of War: Ascension, The Wolf Among Us, more added to PS Store

godofwarascension-header

Kratos returns (again) as God of War: Ascension is now available to download from the PlayStation Store. I could have sworn this happened months ago, but the weekly PlayStation Store update doesn’t lie. Also available this week is the first episode of Telltale’s latest episodic adventure series, The Wolf Among Us. The Fables spinoff stars The Big Bad Wolf and he’s going to huff and puff and…

…let you know that hunting sim Cabela’s African Adventures, horse racing sim Champion Jockey, and game show sim Who Wants to Be a Millionaire: Special Edition are also available as PS3 downloads today.

Over on the Vita, Activision has added Angry Birds Trilogy to the PlayStation Store and XSEED has released their prison-set action RPG Valhalla Knights 3.

More information on all of these games are available after the break and a full rundown of this week’s new game add-ons is available at the PlayStation Blog.

Kickstart This! The Opulent October Edition

October, the month where towns and shops put up Christmas decorations before people have even celebrated Halloween, when you remember that you have a heating system that has lain dormant all summer. And also the celebration of when I crawled out of the womb, a video game controller already in my hand (all birthday presents are welcome). But rather than spend your money on me, or hoarding it for a last minute Christmas Eve rush, instead why not channel the spirit of Tam o’ Shanter and dance with a strange devil in the midnight oil. And by this I mean give a nice game developer a Kickstarter donation.

There are five projects shaking their Starbuck-emblazoned begging cup at you, starting with the video game version of an old homeless man, ColecoVision. There is also Japanese Action RPG Reborn, Zombie RTS Undead Overload, the Lovecraftian 2D adventure game Mark of the Old Ones, and last but not least, the beautiful and unique Knite and the Ghost Lights.

Let’s go.

Big Brother banishes Watch Dogs to Spring 2014

watchdogs-header

Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs was one of this Fall’s most ambitious new games. Perhaps it was a bit too ambitious as the publisher has announced that the game will now be released in Spring 2014. The delay comes slightly over a month ahead of the game’s originally scheduled November 19 release date.

The development team issued the following statement to explain the delay:

Our ambition from the start with Watch_Dogs has been to deliver something that embodies what we wanted to see in the next-generation of gaming. It is with this in mind that we’ve made the tough decision to delay the release until Spring 2014.

We know a lot of you are probably wondering “why now?” We struggled with whether we would delay the game. But from the beginning, we have adopted the attitude that we will not compromise on quality. As we got closer to release, as all the pieces of the puzzle were falling into place in our last push before completion, it became clear to us that we needed to take the extra time to polish and fine tune every detail so we can deliver a truly memorable and exceptional experience.

“It needs more time polish everything up,” the reason for every delay ever. When it’s finally released in Spring 2014, Watch Dogs will be available for the PC, PS3, Wii U, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.

Pokemon X/Y sells four million copies in two days

pokemonxy-header

This weekend’s worldwide launch of Pokemon X and Pokemon Y went quite well for Nintendo. It’s the first time a “main series” Pokemon game was simultaneously shipped to stores across the world and, according to Nintendo, over four million copies of the game were sold on Saturday, October 12 and Sunday, October 13.

“The early response to Pokémon X and Pokémon Y not only reaffirms the ongoing passion of Pokémon fans, but also indicates that an entirely new generation of gamers is eager to experience the franchise for itself,” said Nintendo President Satoru Iwata.

Because the company has never attempted a simultaneous worldwide launch of a Pokemon game before, Nintendo wasn’t able to directly compare it to the sales of previous Pokemon games. But their internal estimates state that X and Y are definitely the fastest-selling 3DS games of all-time and are currently outpacing the sales of Pokemon Black 2 and Pokemon White 2 by 70%.

That’s not pocket (monster) change.
