Daily Scoop: October 8, 2013 – Get ready for t-shirts

Well, I’ve got good news and bad news. The good news is that I’ve got lots and lots of t-shirts to share with you! The bad news is that I have no deals to share with you. But on the other hand, that is probably good news, considering Beyond: Two Souls comes out today, and Pokemon X and Y come out on Saturday, so if you’re like me, you’re about to drop a bunch of money on those anyway.

Well, I’m not sure about Beyond, but I am really tempted to go get it… but the reviews are all over the place. But the demo was so fun. But money and time! So torn.

Anyway, here’s a pile of t-shirts for you!

Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z also coming to PC in early 2014

yaibaninjagaidenz-header

Tecmo Koei has announced that Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z, the zombified Ninja Gaiden spinoff that stars a robot, will also be available for the PC (through Steam) in early 2014. Originally announced for the PS3 and Xbox 360, Yaiba is in development at three studios: Team Ninja, Splash Damage, and Keiji Inafune’s Comcept.

In case you were worried that a game from the creators of Dead or Alive, Quake Wars, and Dead Rising would be tame, a statement from Tecmo Koei is here to calm your fears:

Players all called to battle fierce zombies as Yaiba, a cyborg ninja who will do anything to get revenge and stay alive. Cleaved in two, he is brought back to life with cyber-technology. Brandishing his ninja sword and the mecha weapons in his cyborg arm, he slaughters zombies with brutal, over-the-top abandon.

Step inside a stylised, living comic book where stunning graphics depict a world gone mad. Hordes of undead can only be stopped by Yaiba’s willingness to use any means necessary to get the job done. Will he kill by turning his cyborg arm into a razor chainsaw for slicing up undead… or just rip off an opponent’s arms to use as zombie nunchucks? Both possibilities fill Yaiba’s heart with twisted laughter—and the desire to kill more and more zombies!

Zombie nunchucks! Shut up and take my money!

Rockstar has enough Grand Theft Auto ideas for the next five decades

In an interview with Develop Online, Leslie Benzies, Studio President at Rockstar North, has revealed that the creative team has enough ideas to see the Grand Theft Auto franchise continue well into the second half of the 21st Century.

“We’ve got about 45 years worth of ideas we want to do. We don’t know what GTA VI will be, but we’ve got some ideas. GTA Online is the focus right now. There ain’t no rest between finishing V and then Online. Plus we have some other things – stuff, DLC, I don’t know how to describe it exactly – that we’d like to do, and we’ll pick the right ones.”

Benzies is part of the core team consisting of Rockstar Games co-founders Sam and Dan Houser and Rockstar North art lead Aaron Garbut who initially come together to pinpoint the initial ideas that will then develop into the next GTA title.

“It comes from the idea first. Where is it going to be set is the first question. Then that defines the missions; you’re doing different things in LA than in New York or Miami. The map and story get worked up together, and the story is a basic flow of how it works out so you can layer the missions in… We throw stuff in the pot, and the good stuff stays and the bad stuff disappears – there are a lot of gatekeepers at the studio, who ensure not much of the chaff makes it through. Some of the good ideas, like the three characters, stick around.”

Benzies reveals that the idea of a trio of protagonists was raised in development for GTA: San Andreas, with one from each of the three cities, but was shot down due to technical constraints. He also reveals the thoughts of the team, that they are not making game-like movies, but music albums, with Grand Theft Auto IV reflecting the challenges and difficulties that took their toll on Rockstar.

“GTA IV was dark times. We’d been Hot Coffee-d. We were thinking ‘We make video games, and [the US authorities are] doing this to us?! Our darkness showed in IV, and we realised that. So the DLC lightened it up a bit. Gay Tony especially was more flamboyant and bigger. The expansions added more energy.”

With the launch of Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online now past them, no doubt Benzies, the Houser brothers, and Garbut will soon be meeting again in London to figure out the initial spark that will eventually unfold into Grand Theft Auto VI.

ICHEG adds largest collection of Japanese games in the world to its archive

icheg-japanThe International Center for the History of Electronic Games (ICHEG), which is located in Rochester, NY, has accepted another large donation to increase the size of their already massive archive of games and related items. Andre and Sylvio Hodos, who reside in France, contacted the museum’s curators and offered them a collection of over 7,000 Japanese games that span 22 plaforms. With this acquisition, the ICHEG believes they now own the largest collection of Japanese video games in the world.

Spanning the 1980s and 1990s, the collection covers a crucial period when Japanese video game designers were pioneering many of the most important technologies and styles of play that influenced game design and spurred interest in Japanese culture globally.

The collection is comprised of nearly 7,000 Japanese video games spanning 22 systems, and includes home consoles, handhelds, peripherals, and accessories manufactured by Sega, Nintendo, NEC, and Pioneer. The items, many of which are rare, are in mint or very good condition and include all relevant packaging and instructions.

Like the remainder of the ICHEG’s collection (which now numbers more than 50,000 pieces), the Hodos’ donation will be used by curators for future museum exhibits and the games will be made available to researchers who request to play them.

Triad Wars revealed as new Sleeping Dogs game

sleepingdogs-bannerUnited Front Games announced today that they’re working with publisher Square Enix on a new game in the Sleeping Dogs universe. The two companies will be working together again to bring the world Triad Wars, which the publisher just filed a trademark for last week, according to Polygon.

UFG isn’t going to be sharing any information until 2014 (even what platform Triad Wars will be available for), but I am going to be super happy and freak out a little and maybe – just maybe – go replay Sleeping Dogs instead of picking up Saints Row IV or GTA V. It celebrated its first birthday not long ago – maybe Wei Shen needs to take some more ladies out on dates.

I am way too excited about this.

Injustice Ultimate Edition coming to PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, PC, Vita on November 12

injustice-header

ORIGINAL STORY: Injustice: Gods Among Us has been quite the success for NetherRealm Studios. The Mortal Kombat makers branched out (slightly) and produced a memorable fighting game featuring many of our favorite characters (and Aquaman) from DC Comics lore. So what can they do for an encore? I don’t know, but we’ll all find out together sometime this week. Ed Boon, the developer’s founder and current Creative Director, tweeted the following news last night:

So what’s the big news? A PS4/Xbox One/Vita port is a possibility. As is another downloadable character or a “Game of the Year” edition containing all of the previously released DLC. But as I said, we’ll add find out together soon.

UPDATE: Seconds after this story was posted, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment confirmed that an “Ultimate Edition” of Injustice: Gods Among Us will be released for the PS3 and Xbox 360 on November 12. It will include all six DLC characters as well as additional character skins and S.T.A.R. Labs missions. The game is also coming to the Vita (thanks to Armature Studios), the PC (thanks to High Voltage), and the PS4 (thanks to NetherRealm themselves). Touch controls will be added to the Vita/PS4 versions and a soundtrack will be included with all editions of the game.
