Kickstart This! The “Poo Pub” Edition

Two weeks ago, former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher passed away. Our coalition government saw fit to spend £10 million of taxpayers’ money on her funeral. This was a woman who divided the country, and whose iron grip is still curled around Britain’s bleeding heart. The rich and powerful turned up to see her off, while poverty-driven protesters quite literally turned their backs on the funeral procession. The BBC refused to play “Ding Dong the Witch is Dead,” an anti-Thatcher song taken from The Wizard of Oz, after her haters propelled it to number two on the UK music charts. If anyone could suck the fun out of life, it was Thatcher.

A couple of days after she kicked the bucket, I learned that a humble New Zealand pub owner named Les Lisle had passed away. I met Les only once, in 2011, while travelling the globe with a ginormous backpack strapped to my back. It was customary to stop at the Mahinapua Pub, affectionately known as the Poo Pub, on the way to the town of Wanaka. The tour company I was travelling with booked the place out for a slap-up meal followed by a fancy dress party. When we arrived, old Les (who was 85 at the time) got on the bus and laid down the rules of his house in a well-practised and often funny speech. When we ventured inside his pub, we found the ceiling covered with hats; there were over 3000 of them, all tacked to the ceiling. Les told me some were his, and some were donated by the travelers who passed through. He was managing that pub of his before I was even born. I doubt he played many video games – there was a pool table and dart board – but he was an agent of fun, and probably managed to affect more peoples’ lives in a positive light than Thatcher did with her negative rule. They were both born in 1925, and died with days of one another. If anyone deserved a £10 million funeral, it was Les Lisle.

Unfortunately, I barely have £10, so in honour of his youthful spirit in the face of old age, I’m dedicating this month’s Kickstart This! to Les. Let’s see if we can channel some of that positive spirit into funding projects that are fun for all, such as the 2D upward-scrolling platform puzzler Brave Bit, hand drawn sci-fi adventure gameA Small Favor, 8-bit microorganism sim Bitcrobes, and underwater tower defense title Fish vs. Crabs. And just to shake things up, we also have the helpful app GameSnap, and last but not least, PWNED: A Gamers Novel, a romantic comedy adventure set within an MMORPG.

Let the games begin!

505 Games acquires Drawn To Life license

505games-logo

While Nordic Games came away with the big prize from the second THQ auction, 505 Games managed to sneak in a winning bid for the Drawn To Life series. The Italian publisher bid $300,000 for the 5th Cell-developed franchise and that was good enough to win them the rights to the franchise as a whole as well as the previously released Drawn To Life (DS) and Drawn To Life: The Next Chapter (DS, Wii).

The sale of all THQ properties will be finalized during a U.S. Bankruptcy Court hearing on May 13, 2013.

Believe it or not, Deep Silver released the Dead Island: Riptide “torso edition” in UK, Australia

deadislandriptide-header

Back in January, the Internet went into complete meltdown after Deep Silver revealed the “bloody torso statue” at the center of the Zombie Bait Edition of Dead Island: Riptide. Normally, a limited edition statue wouldn’t cause much of a stir beyond the hardcore special edition collectors, but the “Zombie Bait Edition” was set to include a statue that depicted a mutilated (read: armless and legless and headless) woman wearing nothing but a Union Jack bikini.

Deep Silver apologized for the statue saying, “We sincerely regret this choice.” The statement also said: “[W]e are committed to making sure this will never happen again.” No matter how much they said they regretted it at the time, the company has gone ahead and released the “Zombie Bait Edition” as originally planned in the UK and Australia. I guess if you promise to make sure something never happens again, it has to happen at least once.

According to CNET Australia, a Deep Silver representative told them that “an extremely limited quantity of the Zombie Bait Edition has been made available to some retailers for those customers who wish to purchase it.”

Nordic Games wins big at THQ auction: Darksiders, Red Faction, MX vs ATV, more

nordicgames-header

An unlikely winner has emerged in the second round of the THQ sweepstakes: Nordic Games. The small publisher, located in Austria, bid $4.9 million to obtain the majority of THQ’s remaining properties including Darksiders, Red Faction, MX vs ATV, Destroy all Humans!, Summoner, Titan Quest, Frontlines, Juiced, Full Spectrum Warrior, and over 150 other titles. A full list of Nordic’s acquisitions will be unveiled soon, probably sometime after the purchase hearing current set for May 13.

But now the question becomes, what happens next? What does Nordic Games, best known for publishing the Painkiller series, plan to do with all of these properties? According to Lars Wingefors, Nordic’s CEO, the company plans to embark on an in-depth analysis of each property and will eventually move forward with sequels to many of them.

“First and foremost we are very happy about this deal which also turns over a new leaf for the entire Nordic Games Group. In the long term, we either want to cooperate with the original creators or best possible developers in order to work on sequels or additional content for these titles,” Wingefors said.

To that end, Nordic Games has set up a special section in their official forums to solicit fan feedback on how to proceed with their new toys.

The first half of the THQ auction was held in January, with Deep Silver, Ubisoft, Crytek, Take-Two Interactive, and Sega participating.

Metal Gear Solid: Legacy Collection coming to PS3 in June

metalgearsolidlegacycollection-boxAfter a tweet from creator Hideo Kojima seemingly outed the package last week, the Metal Gear Solid: Legacy Collection has finally been officially announced by Konami.

The Legacy Collection will be available exclusively on the PlayStation 3, and will consist of Metal Gear Solid, the somewhat rare Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions (both will be the PSone versions), the HD Collection versions of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, and the “Trophy Edition” of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Not only will you get all that, you will also receive not one, but two, digital graphic novels written by Ashley Wood.

The Legacy Collection will be available in stores sometime in June, and we’ll bring you an official release date as soon as Konami announces it, so stay tuned!

Splinter Cell: Blacklist’s Wii U features are declassified in this new trailer

The latest trailer for Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist showcases some of the in-game abilities that have been made easier to execute using the Wii U GamePad.

Marking targets and drone piloting are just two things that you can expect to use the Wii U GamePad for in Blacklist. It really looks like Ubisoft has enhanced the gameplay experience by using the Wii U GamePad instead of giving the system a straight port.

Ubisoft is targeting a release date of August 20 in North America, August 22 in EMEA regions, and August 23 in the UK for Splinter Cell: Blacklist.
